i'm trying to stage a game and every attempt results in time out. Direct IP or any method other than gamespy, tell me how I could play this multiplayer game!

If you're trying to play by email, it makes a save-game file which you then email to your friend.

If you're trying to play with someone else directly then you need ports open. How you do this will vary depending upon how you are connected to the internet, so please give some more details.

If you have upgraded to patch C then you can go to "Internet Game" and settup a game there which you should both be able to join.

should I tell him to get the patch?

To PBEM (Play By EMail) you just select the option. An account isn't necessary.
