View Full Version : Best handheld gaming system?!?!
Narz Mar 19, 2007, 11:12 PM What is it?
Please tell me! http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/civ4/religion.gif
Thanks! :goodjob:
Xanikk999 Mar 22, 2007, 06:40 PM The nintendo DS. Though most DS games suck, the PSP really doesnt have that many good games for it.
But then again all i really play are on handhelds are rpgs. Most of the RPGs on PSP are low grade pieces of crap.
Kan' Sharuminar Mar 22, 2007, 07:07 PM Probably some form of Gameboy, right up to the current DS years. The series has had the longevity and support for years that even some major consoles have lacked :)
potatokiosk Mar 22, 2007, 08:00 PM Gameboy Advance is pretty neat.
Kozmos Mar 22, 2007, 08:04 PM Handhelds suck. Do not buy them.
plarq Mar 22, 2007, 08:51 PM GBA is ok. PSP and NDS aren't worth the bucks.
cegman Mar 22, 2007, 10:57 PM GBA because of the games from GB GBC and GBA.
Cornstalk Mar 23, 2007, 08:39 PM It depends on what you're looking for in a handheld system.
The PSP is rather lacking in fun and well made games, so it really falls short for most people that would use it -just- to game. The only good personal testimony I've heard about it is from an online friend who actually puts other features of the PSP to good use, such as the MP3 player and the portable movies. Game wise, the PSP offers more mature themed games, mostly in the shooter department... though a lot of them don't handle very well. There's also a pretty big selection of racing games.
The Nintendo DS offers a huge variety of puzzle games, which is probably what it does best. Most DS games are geared more for short burst play... as in you can sit there for maybe 10-20 minutes before turning it off again for a while. It does support gameboy advanced games, which includes a lot of classic SNES titles and remakes, which is great for the sidescrolling platform lover. Metroid Zero Mission (remake of the original metroid), several good castlevania games, Drill Dozer, and most of the 2D mario games through the ages are playable through Advanced or DS... on the DS. Many of the lighthearted and even 'kiddy' classified games can be found on the DS, which is great if you have youngins.
Both systems offer online play, but few games actually support it. If you have a wireless router in your home, usually the games can be configured to run through it. Both also offer short ranged wireless connections for head to head and coop play (based on the games) in the same spirit that was introduced with the original gameboy release, just without the annoying link cords.
The deciding factor should really come down to which system offers more games you'd like own, since they only -really- overlap in the puzzle area, but other wise sport completely different styles.
warpstorm Mar 24, 2007, 07:36 AM I really like my DS.
It has a few turn-based strategy games that are good on it (and if you read this site you like the genre).
The cool thing is that they are starting to port PC games from the early 90s to it. This summer Settlers 2 and Warlords 2 are coming out for it. Maybe Civ will follow suit.
steviejay Mar 25, 2007, 10:31 AM I love the DS, I bought one for the train to work (working in Edinburgh for a few months in the summer + where I live = 3-4 hours train time a day) and it's just brilliant. What's better is the fact they're releasing alot of the older games such as Final Fantasy, Mario 64, Theme Park. Best handheld out atm in my opinion
Swedishguy Mar 31, 2007, 05:15 PM My GBA has given me a lot of joy over the years. I would say GBA is the best. Right now, I should say.
steviejay Apr 01, 2007, 05:25 AM Well the DS is going from strength to strength with me, I discovered they'd just released Theme Park for it so I rushed out to buy it and I've been playing it ever since, playing it even more than my 360 and PC. I'm just loving it so much heh
warpstorm Apr 01, 2007, 12:18 PM Have any of you tried the gaming crack cut with herion that is Puzzle Quest?
This is the most addictive game on a hand held yet.
Melhisedek Apr 01, 2007, 01:36 PM Another vote for DS
Swedishguy Apr 01, 2007, 01:57 PM Handhelds suck. Do not buy them.
Handhelds would suck if it weren't for... THE INCREDIBLE UNBEATABLE FANTASTICAL POKÉMON FRANCHISE!!!!
a space oddity Apr 29, 2007, 02:28 PM One more vote for DS here. And yes warpstorm, puzzle quest.... ! :satan: I love it! :goodjob:
Tycoon101 Apr 30, 2007, 04:52 AM DS for sure. Gotta love the ability to dual-wield two cartridges at once.
trada Apr 30, 2007, 07:07 AM GP2X. If PSP is Windows the GP2X is Linux. It's open-source and built for emulation and homebrew games. Don't expect any fancy shiny eye-candy titles here, this is old school MAME, NES, SNES, SEGA, GB/C etc. www.gp2x.co.uk
Swedishguy Apr 30, 2007, 07:45 AM DS is so expensive. GBA is therefore better.

You nearly made me jump out of my chair there!
I'd love to play Secret of Mana on a handheld. But i read it barely works, unfortunately.
And with 200Mhz it appears to be underpowered for most DOSBox games.
The GP2X sounds like an awesome concept, but it appears to be a little underpowered (or rather: lacks optimized emulators). I'm not going to 200Euro to have jerky gameplay with Commander Keen.

The GP2X can overclocked very easily. All units can go up to 240, most to 270 and some to 300. But yup, you are right. It does seem a little under powered. It fails to emulate N64 and PSX emulation is downright nasty right now. This little unit isn't for everybody but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. The emulation is getting better and better all the time (for instance, breakthroughs in GBA emulation where we now have most games full speed W/O sound).
Of course, Doom, Doom II, Duke Nukem 3D, Desent, and a few other PC games have been ported.
You will find the current status of all emulation here (http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Emulation_Speculation).
btw, just to attempt to round up my 'sales-pitch' the GP2X can play music files, movie files and has inbuilt text and photo apps. Score!
carmen510 Apr 30, 2007, 06:36 PM DS or SP. I have the special edition of SP that looks like an NES controller. I'd prefer DS, you only get 120 charges with SP...
PSP almost sucks, except for Daxter and MP3s/vids. And maybe SOCOM. :p
Of course, you could always get a cell phone or the Gizmondo or even Zuma. :p

:p
Thats the Micro.
DS though imo is overpriced due to the massive demand. Great system. some very neat games AdvWarsDS, AgeEmpires, FFtactics2, Turnabout court.
Swedishguy May 06, 2007, 12:35 PM GBA will always be in my heart. Unless I'm given a DS for free, o' course.
carmen510 May 06, 2007, 07:48 PM Its not the micro. Its like an SP, but its colored like an NES controller.
Here's a pic: http://www.gamestation.co.uk/images/main/gameboy/GBA-SP-Classic-NES-Edition2.gif
Alpha Killer II May 09, 2007, 11:21 PM PSP: U can login into myspace on it ^.^
EDIT: The Gameboy SP is second, I used to have it, good game, but I eventually sold it at gamestop for another game (Tetris, the old GB game was worth $10 while my Mario vs Donkey Kong (A SP game) was worth only $1) But my bro bought the original Gameboi Advanced (The one w/o the light) soon after, and it totally sucked, made me knock off a few points off of nintendo (And the SP had recharceable batteries, unlike Advance)
odintheking May 14, 2007, 07:33 PM DS is way better as a game system. Overall, it has more games worth playing. If you want a multimedia system with lukewarm versions of everything, get PSP, though.
