I cannot find any description of the mercenaries mod (included in RFC). I've found the button that makes my unit mercenaries, but:

1) Can I hire mercenaries as well?
2) What will happen with my mercenaries? Will they come back later?
3) How do I know how much I will get paid before making my units mercenaries?

I would suggest you play around with the interface, it's rather intuitive. To answer the questions:

1) Yes.
2) They may die in the service of another civ. They will come back when A) You manually cancel their service or B) You discover Nationalism.
3) Click the mercenary icon, then the Mercenary Contracts text on the bottom of the screen. Highlight any units contracted out to see the income.

I take it you haven't seen the "axe" icon next to the log icon at the upper-left of the screen, or you always play America (do they start with Nationalism?).
