What determines how many troops enter a captured city. What determines which ones die? I understand most of the combat concepts ( modifiers etc) but still havent figured that one out.

example. I attack a city that has 3 defenders with a stack of 10 troops. How many actually end up in the city? If the other troops didnt attack why can they no longer move? And which of my units will recieve the damage?

Sounds like you're using stack combat. If so, turn it off and you'll get a better understanding of it all.

As I understand it, if you use stack attack, your units will attack one by one (starting with those with the best chance to win). Some will win (but take damage), the unit which kills the last defender will enter the city along with any unit in the stack that has movement left (i.e. not the units that have already attacked that turn).

Thus, best case, with 3 defenders, two of your units will attack and win (using up their movement in the process). Your 3rd attacker will kill the last defender and enter the city along with the 7 units that have not attacked that turn.

Does that fit with your experience?
