I got the message "The Spanish Civilization has been destroyed" years and years ago in this game...never imagined the barbs were responsible, and a holy city too...wonder where my knights and trebs are going in 1 turn ?:)

In my last two games one civilization was destroyed by barbarians. First it was England with two cities, then americans with one city.

Nowadays I use raging barbarians option and Better AI. I think raging barbarians is the only right way to play CIV...

I played with a customized difficulty lately: Barbs/animals, maintenance, city happiness and villages from 'Deity' mixed with the (initial) AI bonus from 'Noble'.

'BetterAI' (which basically adds +1 do the difficulty level towards AI civs) survives that easily and barb cities can survive till modern times.

G'day mates,

In a recent game with a North America map from this site, the barbs destroyed 3 complete civilizations. Fortunately I had the Great Wall and scored over 43000. And these were not even raging.

Now I'm playing the same map again but with raging barbarians and they haven't taken anyone out at all and it is the year 1595.

I agree raging barbarians are much more fun though.

Cheers!

I play on Raging Barbs too and always try to rush to the Great Wall. I often sit behind my wall after it's built and laugh as the barbs destroy 1, 2, sometimes even 3 civs.

It happens...I saw a pick not so long ago about the barbarians capturing all of Egypt. It tends to happen to more isolated civs that can't keep up by tech trading, and once those barbarians get a foothold, then they can do some damage.

All hail the mighty nation of Barbaria! (For as long as it stands...)

I saw that happened to Izzy three games in a row a while back. In one of them, Madrid was the holy city of both Hinduism and Judaism. Judaism spread to a nearby barb city. Strangely, neither Churchill, despite being #1 in military, nor Montezuma, despite being Montezuma, saw fit to take it from the barbs, although it was on their borders. So weird. In another one, the barbs conquered both Izzy AND Fredrick. This was not with Raging, either.

*grin*, this is why I like my Insane Barbs mod.

Raging barbs makes barbs more likely to attack cities, and about doubles barbarian density.

Insane Barbs quadruples animal density and doubles barbarian density on top of that.

Most end up with 3 to 5 civilizations wiped out by barbarians. Entire early religions get stuffed out, as the high-culture/builder civilization that founded them gets overrun before it spreads.

Barbarians, as a whole, are usually a larger civilization than any other empire.

It does make the great wall too good, however.

That's truly amazing.

Off topic, but very curious. What map type is that?

Wow... I remember in CivII one or two civilizations getting WIPED OUT by the barbarians right in the beggining of the game. But I've never imaginated that in CivIV that they where so strong.

I *always* make a mad dash for the Great Wall. Even on the normal, the barbs are nuts. They'll harass you to the ends of the earth. That makes it hard to get stuff done! I'll have to try raging barbs and make sure I get the wall. That's a good method of pest control!

Hmm....
This seems to happen to Isabella a lot when raging barbarians is checked. (I've seen it happen multiple times.) I wonder why.

Happens a lot (well she loses cities often) even when I don't play with raging barbs. It's her frankly ludicrous tech path, which often doesn't include Archery until (a decent example....Meditation, Mining, Masonry, Poly, Monotheism, and then either bw or hunting/archery).

Depends upon the lvl played, but its the early obsession with religion, and founding the first couple of cities with just warriors that gets her killed. Huge maps and especially marathon mean wave upon wave of barbs. Her tech path is often suicidal (if the player tried it I'd have no sympathy at all) :)

I think archery is a starting tech for all AI, at least at the monarch+ levels. But yeah, it is rare for Izzy to be the powerhouse of the map with her religious focus and how she makes enemies out of others just because of their religion. Although I did have one game where Izzy somehow did become the biggest and most technologically advanced civ on the map other than my civ. I think because I destroyed her enemies for her during my wars. But it's rare for her to be strong.

Very strange, considering the Spanish Empire's historical power. We need Philip II in BtS!

Ah yeah, I forgot, I play with a much doctored game, where the Ais don't start with archers at any level (don't ask it's so modded it isn't really equiv to any lvl)..anyways with "normal civ rules" she still goes crazed on the religious techs.
