As far as I know the only difference if you buy the French version is that the paper copies of the documentation are in French. The software is the same for all languages. You can select the language to play it in, and it defaults to the one your system is set up for.

If you buy a boxed copy you will probably need to download the latest patch from the main site Patches and Updates (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=12) links.
