View Full Version : Cultural Expansion
woodelf Apr 05, 2007, 05:12 AM In my views this is simply too fast as is. Your Palace should expand it's first ring quickly, but after that I think we need to eliminate most/all culture until the colonies have gone beyond suriviving and into expanding.
Without a python guy on board I think we'll be stuck with using the culture mechanism for this expansion, but we could call it something else.
GeoModder Apr 05, 2007, 07:30 AM Looks like it. At least we can still implement what will determine border growth.

culture growth is a function of how much culture the city generates per turn. the growing rings of culture around a city are hardcoded by Civ 4 to the best of my knowledge at predefined culture levels of something like 10, 100, 1000, and 25,000 (legendary culture status) culture points.
the starting city is slightly different. as the capitol of the civ it has a set amount of culture for turn without building anything.
in vanilla Civ 4 one of the civ traits gives all cities the equivalent of a free temple without building one. hence cities of civs with that trait expand relatively rapidly.
=====================================
what this amounts to is that we are designers are still in control because we create the buildings that create the culture points each turn. we also decide if any of the civ traits or civics will generate culture points.
========================
I would propose holding off on the redesign of buildings (including the decision of which ones will output culture) civics/charters, and civ traits until we get the major patch to 0.23a finished.
I have created a proposed to-do list that prioritizes at which mod version the changes to the mod will occur. see post 3 of the Plans thread

woodelf Apr 06, 2007, 04:16 AM Actually the culture rings can be changed to whatever we want and they can be manipulated based on difficulty level as well. I simply want every first era building generating 0 culture other than the Lunar palace.

:goodjob:
And perhaps only 1 "culture" point for this palace?
woodelf Apr 06, 2007, 11:06 AM Yep. You shouldn't expand territory when you're worried about survival.

a decision like this would come as a consequence of the nature of the eras in the game
I personally think we can punt on such a decision at least until version bandaid version 0.23b is released.
soibean Apr 07, 2007, 04:05 PM I agree that culture should be crippled early on. Survival is key and it doesn't make sense that a stranded corporation would immediately know how to thrive on a barren planet like the moon
woodelf Apr 08, 2007, 07:39 AM I'm going to cripple :culture: for now and upload a version sometime today.
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 11:42 AM So, will :culture: be renamed in the mod?
woodelf Apr 09, 2007, 11:59 AM Do you know how to change the icon?
Expansion or something else for culture works for me.
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 01:02 PM It's a case of putting OR a new icon in the right location of the general icon file, OR linking in a .xml file to a new .dds file.
woodelf Apr 09, 2007, 01:31 PM Any new icon in mind? Also, do we want currency to stay gold?
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 01:37 PM Depends on how we see territorium increase. If it is energy-based, SMAC's energy icon would be good. Or why don't we do it the most generic way, and depict it with an icon showing the Moon itself?
As on money, Masters Card -or VISA icon could be good. :D
woodelf Apr 09, 2007, 01:40 PM The Moon is perfect. This will make the Lunar Real Estate Law tech important!

Oh, but that tech will become part of the Chartra Selene in the revised version... :mischief:
What do you think of the VISA -or Master Card idea?
Do you know of any other credit company which has an icon with the same height and length?

Not off hand, but I'm sure there are some out there.
If a credit card can look un-hokey then I'm all for it.
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 01:50 PM un-hokey? Don't know the meaning of this.
woodelf Apr 09, 2007, 01:51 PM Oops. Something that doesn't look out of place or stupid.
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 01:54 PM Well, currently the € is the strongest currency outthere... :mischief:
woodelf Apr 09, 2007, 01:56 PM These language miscommunications are funny at times.
Whatever you'd like to use is fine by me! Now go answer my question in the Units thread please. :whipped:
GeoModder Apr 09, 2007, 02:00 PM
This character limitation on CFC sometimes blocks my fun. ;)
GeoModder Apr 10, 2007, 10:49 AM How does this look as icon for the culture representation? Properly reduced and worked by an experienced icon-creator of course. ;)

woodelf Apr 10, 2007, 10:52 AM Perfect. Maybe snipper or frenchman could finish it for you Geo.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2007, 02:43 PM Actually, I thought to propose to do it as it seems there's vacation elsewhere.
I've already been requested by niknaks for unit icons but that is not a problem.
GeoModder Apr 10, 2007, 02:47 PM Good, we have a volunteer! :goodjob:
woodelf Apr 10, 2007, 02:49 PM :woohoo:
snipper!!! found our vacation home Geo. :p
GeoModder Apr 10, 2007, 02:53 PM While we're at it, let's quickly post a pic of the Smac energy icon for conversion to .dds (if it isn't done already somewhere)
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2007, 03:04 PM I haven't altered tga files yet, it seems I'm scared by the 3 letters. Are the Ideologies showed on the city bar ?

As they replace Religions, it would be best for quick reference. So yes please.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2007, 04:04 PM What do you think of moonsong #1 :
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/105110/moonsong.png
woodelf Apr 10, 2007, 04:07 PM I like it snipper. I'd have to see it in game, but it looks super.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2007, 04:17 PM here is a size 64 dds http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/105110/moonsong.zip.
Let me know if you need resizing it.
woodelf Apr 10, 2007, 04:24 PM Thanks. I need to find where to put it and how to link it to culture now.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2007, 05:06 PM Gamefonts for sure. I can't recall if ther's another place. Too tired, I can't stay more.
woodelf Apr 10, 2007, 05:10 PM It'll keep until I can actually find Gamefonts. This is all new to me.
AlazkanAssassin Apr 13, 2007, 08:43 AM You could go with the MoonUnit for currency: http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/4158/moonunitop0.png (http://imageshack.us)
woodelf Apr 13, 2007, 08:47 AM That's kind of eyecatching. Very interesting...
Thanks AA.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 13, 2007, 09:50 AM What do you think of that :
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/105110/MooneyL.png
I call it mooney !
AlazkanAssassin Apr 13, 2007, 09:56 AM I think I would avoid any rounded letter M's, they just make me think of McDonalds. Mmm, cheeseburger ... (goes off in search of :food: )
GeoModder Apr 13, 2007, 10:00 AM I'm with Alazkan on this one. It doesn't rock my boat.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 13, 2007, 10:04 AM It is based on, Alazkan !
By the way, I posted it just for fun and I still like the name I found.
Here is an advanced version :

woodelf Apr 13, 2007, 11:09 AM I like the moon background. Can you make the M less thick?
But that background and coloring looks sharp.
snipperrabbit!! Apr 17, 2007, 05:06 PM Here's a new proposal with new background :
