The geopolitical landscape is in flux, with France having a settler and two axemen near the site of the gold and cows, north of NoneOfTheAbove. This has prompted interest in revisiting the decision to settle near copper.

Question: Where should the third city be placed?

Gold+Cow
Copper etc.
None of the above, return to discussion

Gold an cows would make a good powerhouse city, and having one of those right next to our potential enemy, France, will be of great benefit to our nation, we may have lost copper, but horses will prove a powerful weapon in the future

Voted gold+cows (as I did previously).

Now still more important, not to be split and powerhouse even more needed
urgently.

can someone explain me the "term" powerhouse. I think it's important to have at least copper so we can defend against french axemen!

Powerhouse refers to a city that has very high production, and thus will be able to turn out buildings and military units quickly.

I'm okay with gold and horses, but my worry is if Nappy would declare war and steal our settler/city 3 from us. Warrior in city fortified on hill cannot fight off a combat one axeman, or two for the matter.

Nappy could declare war and destroy us with his two axes. That is just as likely without the 3rd city as it is with the city. Which is to say very unlikely since Civ4 wouldn't be much of a game if the AIs routinely killed off players so early. If we end up with a gold monopoly, maybe we can trade it and keep the area peaceful.

I see. Good point. That means that we have to upgrade our defenses ASAP. Keshiks and axemen should be built whenever possible.

The cow gold is the prefered powerhouse because it won't be cut off by that nasty French settler

This got me thinking:
- If those two axemen were barbarians rather than French, I wonder who would still want to settle in our current location with only a warrior to protect us.
- Does the AI really have such different strategies for barbs and non-barbs that one would definitely attack and the other definitely would not?
- Do you remember when you were so new to Civ (whatever number) that you didn't know the AI wouldn't attack you?
- Do you ever miss those days? I do - sometimes anyway.

What...if statements don't get us much further. They aren't barbarian and I never had the AI declare war upon me just because I settled in a spot he intended to settle in.

Quite true. My vote is still to be cast in case anyone has a good argument for where to settle.

Yes, it is. Barbs always attack in such cases, while civs will never attack in such cases.

Barbs wouldn't have a settler there. Besides, attacking is what makes them ... barbarians.

You should build it 1 square north from gold&cows option to get rice too. I think rice is the weakest of food resources but in this case it would come in need.
