I think it is a matter of preference. Some may think the original mine is too small, compared to the space a fortress or baricade takes up.

I had in mind what you have in post one, but shrunk, and a whole lot of them (kind of an industrial district, think like this (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Theworks_view.jpg)) on top of a generic metallic ground, this is to make it look urbanized. Give me a day or two to install a game I have, and I can give you some metallic surfaces to build on top of, :).

Maybe you could also tell what you have in mind for the irrigation and I could start playing around with that.

Do you want the mines to cover most of the tile.
BTW, I see a planet in the picture for irrigation, not able to see any detail. You say they are going to be residential areas. What kind of buildings and any other stuff.

Of course, you probably have your own way, but I just wanted to give you an idea of what I want. I feel like I'm being very vague... please ask if I need to elaborate, :).

Are you going to be using roads or rails in this game.
The reason I ask is because the roads will be going over top of the irrigation and may not look good. Generally it is a better idea to put the buildings on a roads or railroads file so they go on the top layer.
Mines go over roads so not a problem.
There was someone who did a roads file a few years ago that was level an urban sprawl. The whole map would be highrises if you built a full road system.

I like both the "truncated aeroplane-hangar with smokestacks & a bit of smoke" and the "spinning-jenny with cave-digging appendix" (two of the latest gfx. But I have one complain about them.
They are a bit too big for my taste. Make them about 12.5 - 17.5 % smaller, and they'll look better in the game :yup:
