View Full Version : playing to the end
davbenbak Apr 09, 2007, 08:36 AM I have seen several threads about winning the historical objectives but none about playing through till the end of the game. I've done it with Egypt and China. Babylon was another story between spawning Persians, Arabs and Turks there were just too many set backs. Also when the distance with Carthage and Rome despite constant French revolutions.
How do the later starting civs fare? Is there a civ switch strategy? I like like to have atleast one of the founding religions for shrine purposes so I've only played Mediterranean civs. Maybe I'll try the Aztecs or Incas next.
Gunner Apr 09, 2007, 09:37 AM You can read this thread for a lot of discussion about a world conquest: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=209801.
Personally I find it way too boring.
biggamer132 Apr 09, 2007, 10:53 AM Back on v132, I played until the end and quite a bit beyond with Rome (I was trying to conquer every square inch of Europe). I don't think it's possible to do on current versions of the mod, but it was a hell of a lot of fun.
flyingchicken Apr 09, 2007, 01:34 PM World conquest? I believe you need to be exceptionally fortunate to be minimally affected by the plague in your mission to eradicate the rest of civilization.

Oh, it's quite possible to play to the end. Now WINNING by playing to the end, that's another story! I've found that with good diplomacy, finishing with the top score when time runs out is do-able. Depending on which version you're playing, Alpha Centauri is possible, but I haven't tried it on the latest version. Taking over the world by conquest? Hats off to those who pulled it off; I can't.

Conquest is only possible with Babylon :p
davbenbak Apr 09, 2007, 07:03 PM P.S. I won by having the highest score with all of the civs I listed except Rome because I got a cultural victory ten turns from the end.
Whitefire Apr 10, 2007, 01:05 AM Conquest is only possible with Babylon :p
How much are you willing to bet? ;).

If you rush to Asshitaru(sp?) Bowman you can conquer Egypt and India. You attack Egypt with 2 Warrior and 1 Bowman as soon as you can. India the same thing.
For some bizarre reason Bowmans can pass through jungle, and about 4~5 Bowmans can kick China ass...
I made all this! But in the end Independents States count in CONQUEST! T_T So you need to take Jerusalem too ( the others 2 cities flip to you )...
You need to make all these before Persia spawn... and it is possible :)
fearuin Apr 10, 2007, 07:03 AM I've only played three times until the end of the game, both in older version. The first one was with Rome (won by Space victory ONE turn before the end, in 2049), second with China (won by score), and the third one with Egypt (won by score, too, but I missed culture for very little).
Actually, the best civs to play to the end are Japan, America, England, Mali and Russia. Maybe China too. However, it would be interesting to try it also with second-rate civs like Aztecs or Mongols. Has anybody won with these ones? (NOT by UHV, of course).
solanacea Apr 10, 2007, 10:07 AM I easily won a cultural victory with France after missing the historical victory. (1 less city than required in Canada).

I missed the Aztec UHV by 5 turns. Aztec is pretty fun if you expand properly. i.e. into NA instead of CA.

Or exceptionally healthy. :wink, wink:
wolfigor Apr 14, 2007, 10:16 AM I won a cultural victory with Japan (or was it China? I can't remember) and a friend of mine just sent me a message about winning by culture with Babylon.
I did try without success to win by domination with Japan.
Now I'd like to try it with Rome, but I'm my current game the UHV will come first.
The Everard Apr 20, 2007, 09:15 AM I would try it but my computer cries by the time I reach the enlightenment. (1 minute turn times.)
Lone Wolf Apr 22, 2007, 08:00 AM I always play to the end. My computer runs smoothly, however it keeps giving me MAF. Well, sometimes I still win by high score. I have done it with England, America and Germany. :goodjob:
davbenbak Apr 23, 2007, 11:34 AM JHad a tough time with the Aztecs. Maybe it was just bad luck or the setting. It took forever to get any religion even though I traded with all the christian nations as that religion seems to spread the fastest. Never was able to catch up tech wise but I was able to cause the collapse of America then snatch up their cities.
The Everard Apr 24, 2007, 06:16 AM What sort of crazy specifications do you need to play to the end? Could you please tell me?

But did you won? If none, I'll try to crown myself!! :king:
davbenbak Apr 25, 2007, 06:07 AM Nope, I came in third so the crown is yours. Japan won. They had too many wonders after conquering China and India. Spain also dominated Europe by taking out Rome and France which I have never seen before. I'll try again on the easiest setting. Maybe I'll have a little better luck.
davbenbak Apr 26, 2007, 10:21 AM @Everard
Nothing crazy just a HP Pavillion with an AMD dual core processer. I do have all the childish unnecessary eye candy turned off as well as the music. Yes, late in the game it does sometimes take as long as a whole minute between turns but htat seems like a small price to pay.
The Everard Apr 27, 2007, 02:24 AM Is it just me or do half the forumers come from texas?
kairob Apr 27, 2007, 04:16 AM Yeah, why is that?
davbenbak Apr 27, 2007, 09:06 AM Texas is more than just a state in the union, it is a state of mind as well. If you've ever been here you would know what I mean.
LuKo Apr 27, 2007, 10:01 AM I want Texas- just after Electoral Palatinate :D
kairob Apr 27, 2007, 10:02 AM and that means you guys like civ and forums?
