View Full Version : Bronze working (reveals copper)
Insidion Apr 13, 2007, 12:06 PM So, i've never played a Civ game in my life. But i played it thru once and was able to get a point victory and now i'm addicted.
Anyway this is the most complex game i've ever played, and after reading the entire manual and then some almost twice, and a lot of articles on here i have a lot of questions. So thanks in advance hopefully :)
Question 1:
when i research bronze working, is copper supposed to reveeal immediately? as in i can see where it is (by the time i finish researching i've usually done a decent job of revealing all the territory around my immediate vicinity in hopes there is some copper. Cuz it doesnt seem to. I end up sending all of my workers to every hill i can see and making a mine and that doesnt usually work either. eventually it just kinda pops up and i don't even know why.

DigitalBoy Apr 13, 2007, 12:12 PM Copper will be revealed automatically. You don't need a mine on the tile to reveal copper. In fact, Bronze Working will even reveal copper in tiles that you've scouted out but can't "see" (due to fog).
Keep in mind that resources are more likely to be in certain areas. Copper is frequently found in arid plains and deserts. Much less frequently, you can find it in grasslands.
UncleJJ Apr 13, 2007, 12:13 PM Once you have researched Bronze Working you will always be able to see any copper anywhere on the map as long as one of your units is close enough including in enemy territory... and that is any unit including military ones or missionaries. That applies to other techs that reveal stuff on the map like Animal Husbandry and horses.
Note there is also a rare random event that turns a mine on a hill into a copper mine that is not revealed until it happens, but can't happen anyway until you have the technology.

Yes. As soon as you acquire Bronze Working or any other tech revealing a resource, that resource shows up on any tile you've revealed -- even if said tile is currently out of your line of sight.
Copper, Iron, Horse and other early-game resources are not always going to be in your general vicinity, though usually there's at least one of those.
The easiest way to spot any resource is by turning resource flags on. Press <Ctrl>+<r> to make resources impossible to miss.

It sounds like you're talking about a different aspect of the game. Any mined hill one of your cities is working has a chance of 'discovering' a resource which was not there before. I believe the odds are 0.01% per resource per turn.
So it's possible to 'mysteriously' discover a source of Gold (or something) near one of your cities every turn.
I would like to point out, though: you do NOT need to mine a hill to reveal resources ... discovering the tech alone does that for you ... the mine is simply to gain access to the resource.
Hope this helps ...
LuckyAC Apr 13, 2007, 01:30 PM Besides the fact that it is too unreliable to count on, just mining random hills won't discover new sources of anything, since you need to work the squares to have that chance.
Cam_H Apr 13, 2007, 05:15 PM Just a small tip for 'newer players' that might prove to be handy ...
If you see the A.I.'s Workers mining a Grassland or Plains tile in the early game, and you have yet to discover Bronze or later Iron Working, well ... they have, and will therefore have access to metal units.

Just seeing the A.I.'s mining a tile that's making abnormally large amounts of production means that it's copper or iron.
