View Full Version : Bts - Corporations
utberguy Apr 14, 2007, 03:34 PM There's been a lot of discussions on what civs should be included etc.
What do people think about the corporations?
Do you think they will use the real-life corporations?
or it will be generic?
I think it will be like religion, whoever discovered corporation/ computer/ synthetic fibre etc will found a corp.
and the first to discover computers will found Firaxis, or 2K games.
please post your ideas
Catharsis Apr 14, 2007, 04:26 PM I don't think they'll use real corporations; that'd be a lawsuit minefield. It would be good if you could name your corporation, though. I yearn to found the "We Hate The Aztecs Computer Corporation".
Babbler Apr 14, 2007, 05:42 PM Putting really corporate names would invite trouble.
I like name those corporations, however.
LightSpectra Apr 14, 2007, 05:42 PM I hope it isn't like religions, and it's more interactive than that.
Like, a corporation is a project, and it's based off of either a technology, unit or resource. The more players you're in contact with that don't have the object (i.e. the bigger monopoly you have over it), the more money you get. Something like that.
Blaarg Apr 14, 2007, 09:22 PM I'm very curious to see how this feature turns out. I'm guessing it'll be like the East Indies Tea Company.

What are other obsolete company names they can use?
thenooblet22 Apr 14, 2007, 10:24 PM Its probably going to be generic. I think it will be used to make use of those excess resources you have. So like (Wheat + Cow) equals some restaurant/fastfood joint.
NYHunter Apr 15, 2007, 01:22 AM I cannot begin to speculate on what they have instore for us with this new feature but I am really excited about it.
I am thinking it will probably be similar with religions in that you would have to spread it in a similar way. It's probably not my ideal way, but it seems like that is what they would do.
Babbler Apr 15, 2007, 02:06 AM So, if corporations are like religions, what would replace missionaries?
Mechants?
Traders?

First I like that naming structure (with the human having the opportunity to choose the name of any founded corporation).
Second, it has put me in mind of an interesting way of implementing corporations. Allow two of each corporations. If a corporation is related to the iron resource, allow two corporations related to iron to be generated (and only two). If you fail to found one of the iron corporations you can only get the benefits of the iron corporation by trading with one of the two corporations. If you choose the Aztec Iron Corporation over the Egyptian Iron Corporation, you get positive diplomatic modifiers from the Aztecs and negative diplomatic modifiers from the Egyptians.

probably officers/ sales clerk.
The Lance Apr 16, 2007, 01:08 AM I think corporations will be a form of weapon. Hey I know it's different than the religion assumption everyone is working with, so bear with me here.
In the field of international relations MNCs (multi national corporations) are considered the single largest threat to the modern nation state. This is mostly because they are able to move capital and production based resources across national borders at a rate no nation state is able, or willing, to deal with. These resources are then used towards the GNP, tax base, and general improvement to the HDI (human development index) of their home state. MNC's like Nike are famous for this.
In the civ universe this could be done by seeding your MNC in another state, and that MNC then growing through that state and transferring money into your state. This isn't unreasonable if one considers that the BTS expansion does seem to be focusing on the relationship between diplomacy and economics in a more modern context.
Lord Olleus Apr 16, 2007, 06:21 AM From what I've heard Corporations will be a little like Rock&Roll, HollyWood ect... They will provide a resource (or something similar) which is nescessary for the space race. The only way to get it is to be nice to people or invade the country and get the resource that way.
However, I hope that Corporations will be a little more than that and generate money in different ways.

Franchises or Branches
br_casino Apr 16, 2007, 04:03 PM I wonder if you will be able to buy controlling interest in a Corp founded by a rival or visa-versa. Kind of like culturally flipping a rivals cities, but instead of using culture, you'll have to use $.
hahntsak Apr 16, 2007, 05:01 PM I'd love to found and export McGlobalTech SAG ltd. and dominate the world with it.

Maybe Executives, kind of like the system they had in Corporate Machine. You send out your executives to other regions to bolster your market share.

Strategic Resources
Firaxis: Pirates!/Railroad Tycoon 3

The quote from the press release is: "Each corporation provides benefits in exchange for certain resources." So corporations consume resources, not provide them.
I'd guess that corporations work exactly like religions (in terms of founding by being the first to a technology, and spreading via trade and "missionaries"), except that each corporation will require a different resource and provide a different benefit. If so, then corporations will be what religions should have been. I wouldn't be suprised if they used real historical names like the East India Company or Standard Oil. Remember that corporations started in the seventeenth century, and Firaxis is unlikely to be sued by companies that don't exist any more.

Currently the brits have stock exchange as their UB.
I wonder if stock exchange would become a common feature like the obelisk turning into monuments.
