Now they`re just.... weak and squishy.

Hmm.. now? When did they get a new codex? Or you mean now they are weak compared to other armies that have gotten new codices?

Tyranids have lost their formidableness as the threatening alien race invading the galaxy. Now they're just... weak and squishy.

I disagree. A well set up and played bug army can be a nightmare. It's just that many bug players get seduced by all the big-ugly-sexy large bugs the army has. I have local players who take 1-2 monsters (tyrant+1 more with sinapse, usually) then literally flood the board with genestealers and the rest of the smaller broods. You look at their side of the table and all you see is a wall of bug claws and tendrils and weird weapons... and then they charge. They will tipically have (in a 1800 game) well over 100 minis on the table. They will get to your side and then... lunch time...

I guess, but that's still frightfully limiting, especially given that the big boys are so... they're tanks but their flimsier than regular tanks. And variety isn't as promoted with Tyranids (as odd as that sounds) Fro instance, you would rarely field fleshborers, spinefists and devourers- usually just one of them.
The only reason that I field all three is because i'm using some pretty cool conversions from lizardmen to do them (regular nid gaunts as deathspitters, sauri as devourers and skinks with spinefists :D)

And my Fex is just a Screamer-Killer. Anything else would be too costly to be worth it. Granted my Broodlord has feeder tendrils, but his retinue and other Stealers don't. They're just kitted with rending claws.

Basically, you have lots of choice, but no motivation gamewise for huge variety.

Hmm.. now? When did they get a new codex? Or you mean now they are weak compared to other armies that have gotten new codices?

I mean compared to other new armies. The codex they have was made durning a sort of in-between period, between old writers and new writers. It's very poorly laid out and very poorly written. And with the new generalisations to some of the armies, it goes a little... Civ4 on them; it simplifies them, but that just makes making tactical mistakes less likely to happen. If you have less troop types to field, it's hard to bugger up. Tyranid tactics are very exploitative. They go for the weak spot and break through that way, rather than the sort of mono-et-mono stype of other armies. With these new generalisations, I feel it's given many races an unfair advantage to the poorly written Tyranids. Some say they were overpowered when they were the new codex, but now it's just turned 180 degrees, and they're facing some very unfair races, who yes, have downfalls, but not to the extent they used to. They've lost their... personality, in favour of ease of play. Even chaos has gone from chaotically evil to chaotically random. The new possessed rules embody that fully. How can you field a unit anywhere if you don't know what skill they'll have? And with the possessed, you field them first and roll to find their mutation. It's utter pants. The gods are strange but not that dumb to make their "gifts" as uncontrollable as that.

I don`t know.. Back in the WH mod discussion, someone, I think it was mrtn, said, Chaos isn`t even evil. Its just different. Its chaos. You can`t have something chaotically random. Chaos = Random..

I guess its just a Point of View thing. I think the randomness of the Possessed and the Spawn would be fun. Unless you are a tournament player. In that case, don`t bring them to the table.

Tyranids go for the wak spot and break trough that way.. Mind you, I`ve never played 40k, but this sounds very tyranid-ish to me. Take a bite out of the enemy`s line and then gnaw on his bones..

Yea that old one was okay. I loved the power sword animation.

Jun 07, 2008, 01:36 PM
Okay... Yeah, they're not evil so much as... alternative. Excessive and decadant. But I still think that not being able to field certain units effectivly ruins and gameplay aspect of them. What's the point of being able to Infiltrate when you've already placed the unit on the field?

They took the nobleness out of Khorne too (but a long time ago), who's now just a lunatic where before he was prideful.

And yes, that's exactly what I mean. That's the way the Tyranids play. They pick the worse defended areas, but these new rules make every unit so samey, it's impossible to do it effectivly.

Ah well, I guess i'm just a bit grumpy... The exam stress is getting to me. I think I forgot to mention that i'm sitting in the middle of the Leaving Cert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaving_Cert) right now  I finish come the 13th though, and then after that, off to college with me to major in History and minor in Linguistics (most likely)

Stormrage
Jun 07, 2008, 03:47 PM

Yeah, I haven`t gotten into the fluff yet when Khorne was about martial prowess, not just onslaught, so I wouldn`t know about that, but I think I would`ve like it.

mrtn

Yeah, I haven`t gotten into the fluff yet when Khorne was about martial prowess, not just onslaught, so I wouldn`t know about that, but I think I would`ve like it.Khorne has been pretty angry from the start. If we go back to Realm Of Chaos - Slaves To Darkness we'll see that "Khorne is the Power of Chaos in its aspect of mindless and absolute violence, destroying everything and everyone within it's reach, slaying both friend and foe alike." RoC is the seminal work on chaos, the thing GW goes back to every time they redo chaos.

I've been painting a bit today, first time since I got a new job two weeks ago. :)

Oh, and as to the randomness of chaos, this is great in the background, but that doesn't mean it would be fun playing with random mutations and what not.

Stormrage
Jun 07, 2008, 05:11 PM
If you don`t find it fun, don`t field the units. There are others that find it fun. And dammit guys, half the game is decided by random chance! General, Shmeneral, if the Dice Gods are against you...

Congratulations on the new job :)

Vacations+laziness=late answer...

This happens with most armies tbh. Example: tau players can choose many unit types, but most end up using massed battlesuits, because these are the most efective units. In IG, Armoured Companies are oh-so-attractive, but the best players will take massive infantry and heavy weapon squads, backed by no more that 1-2 tanks (often basilisks). And Eldars are now usually playing Falcon&Co-r-Us...

Really? cause loads of armies that I play against have only one huge centerpiece and they rock. Or suck, depending on when/if you kill it.

Okay. True question. I'm pretty sure that mages cannot get magic armor. I cannot find the rule in the book though.

Recently, that uncertainty cost me the game. grrr. :(
If that is indeed a rule, can one of you give me the page #? Or would it be found somewhere else?

And yes, I am a elf lover. They don't have wings. Or magical star tipped wands. Dagons can fly. Eagles can too. And so can Griffons. Okay? But they are just as short and just as frail. I'm sorry, but the cookies are so good. ;)

Well, I know that chaos mages can certainly have magic armour, as they come with chaos armour in the box. I'd say that mages can have magic armour, but not ordinary armour.

DragonBird
Jun 23, 2008, 08:08 PM
Well, the mundane armor would be listed in the unit/character description. And there are a few armors that have the special rule that allows the mages to cast with it on.

My brother and I played a couple of days ago. Yep. I think I already did the intro. :p Anyways, the game was an objective game - duh. Whoever had the most points within 5" of the objective you get it. yep.

Anyways my brother opted not to use the scout deployment style in this game for some odd reason. I had first turn and I sent each of my spearmen units to their respective objectives. My General with re-rolled 2+ armor saves was running interference for my spearmen. He got the Waywatchers, and killed 2 on the turn he charged. He got another one the next turn and the dudes routed. Then my brother used his mage to fry 2 of my guys with four spells. It sucked for him. Going by averages, that unit should be in your next meal at KFC (Kentucky-Fried-Creatures). Yum. Crispy Elves. But I only lost 2 guys.

His Glade guard took a detour around a residential district. He wanted them around my forces by turn four. They got there and in a firing position in five. It sucked. He only fired one volley at long range at my general. 3 or 4 hits and no wounds.

Okay, its official. the Dark Elves are getting their share of goodies.

New Edition Dark Elves - Link (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=List_Models&code=22&orignav=13)

It seems to me like they are getting 3 or 4 new remodeled guys - Black Ark Corsairs - Assasin? - Cold One Knights (the cold ones seem more 'raptorish') - and one devilishly attractive hydra. They also have 2 new classes of Druchii Noblety, but it might just be a renaming.
One of the units is apparently Mengal's Flayers. It says they sell their skills to the highest bidder. I wonder how good their catfish is? :p

I'm planning on rounding out the Lootas (only one more to go), Burnas, Tankbustas and Pirates, converting a Weirdboy, maybe getting a Big Mek, adding a Painboy to the Nobs, building the trukk that i havent built yet, and once the 5th edition starter set comes out, i'll have about 5 more nobs to add to the mob, an 'eavy armoured warboss, more slugga boyz, and THREE DEFF KOPTAS!!!

There is also space marine stuff that i'll either use as base decoration as kills, or maybe loot some of the stuff. the dreadnought is definately looted :) it sounds like quite a good starter set
U should get a baneblade or two, and turn 'em inta LOOTAS!

And after:

Look at those nice fingers for example, that's just a green basecoat and then a Thraka Green wash. :) I have seventeen of them finished now (apart from bases), six primed and another ten or so converted.

I saw an awesome undead army yesterday during a tournament. I was converted with high elves.

The guy used Spearmen as zombies and swordmasters as grave guard.

He said he hack-sawed the guys heads of and he used skeleton heads on them instead.
He also used the skeleton arms instead of the spears. Anyways, it looked awesome.

I saw something like that in an old WD. Did he have great eagles as great bats, one of them pulling off the head of a empire soldier?

I have now converted my BfSP gobbos, about 50 of them, to slaves. I'll post a pic when I've based the ones that are finished.

The medium brown is VGC Earth with a Devlan Mud wash, and the darker is VMC Chocolate Brown with a Badab Black wash.

If I get my hands on another one (they're out of production, but I'm bidding on a bunch of rats on Swedish ebay right now) I will convert it with a pipe and Sherlock hat. :D :goodjob: Thanks for the idea!

Thanks Varwnos. I only have older pics of rats and skaven I painted two years ago. Here (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a4/mrtnw/Miniatures/Giantrats.jpg) are a few, and if you click around in that folder I have some other old skaven.

I was over to a friend this friday for painting, and base coated a warpfire thrower team, a couple of old beastmasters, a skaven slave musician, and almost finished five gobbos. Nice progress if I say so myself.

It's from Battle for Skull Pass. That box is amazing for what you get, especially if you play dwarves or greenskins, or can use them for anything in another army (skaven slaves, chaos troll, cannon for example).

Sneak peak of the new SM Codex:
HQs
Master
Has well over 20 wargear options, and access to a once per game S:10 AP:1 Orbital Strike that is somewhat similar to the Witchhunter power.

Librarian
Leadership 10, and has an entire page of various powers. Big news is the Psychic Hood which now has a range of 24" instead of infinite.

Master of the Forge
Access to the Conversion Beamer, an old-school Rogue Trader era weapon with a 72" range that grows more powerful the greater the distance to its targets. At its top end, it is S:10 AP:1 Large Blast.

Elites
Terminators
Available in squad sizes of 5-10. Stormshields for Assault Termys confirmed as 3+ invulnerable vs all attacks (assault and shooting).

Techmarines
Has a power allowing you to improve the cover save of a single piece of ruins in your deployment zone by +1. Access to the Thunderfire Cannon, which is artillery and has multiple fire modes based upon 4 small blast markers. One of the fire modes makes its target count as being in difficult ground next turn. ~neat!

Honor Guard
These bad boys have access to "Relic blades" which are +2S powerweapons. Their squad leader is the "Company Champion" who is required to direct attacks vs enemy ICs if possible. ~cool!

Troops
Tactical Squads
Available in 5-10 men. Squads of ten grant access to Flamer/Multimelta/Missile Launcher/Heavy Bolter for FREE. ~Heed the words of the Codex Astartes indeed!

Scouts
WS/BS:3; the heavy bolter option has access to Hellfire rounds.

Land Speeder Storm
Scout transport land speeder nullifies enemy teleport homers and icons within 6". Enemy deepstrikers within 12" roll double scatter. Enemy units who are assualted from it are at -2 Leadership.

Combat Tactics
New marine special rule allows you to voluntarily fail any morale check for any unit in the army.

ICs
Shrike (Raven Guard)
Grants the entire army Fleet instead of Combat Tactics. He has rending lightning claws and Infiltrate.

Cantor (Crimson Fists)
Grants the entire army Stubborn instead of Combat Tactics. Sternguard Veterans count as scoring units.

Sneak peak of the new SM Codex: (part 2)
Marneus Calgar
First off, Marneus Calgar is described as awesome; the Abaddon of loyalists. Not simply because he's an outstanding fighter but because of the support he provides for his army. He gives all Ultramarines the ability to pass or fail any Leadership test (other reports say morale checks). This is a superior ability to Combat Tactics as that only works in CC and the marines can normally only choose to fail.

Marneus also has a rule called "God of War" which allows him to re-roll virtually anything (shooting to hit rolls, attacks rolls in assualt, to wound rolls). It is basically the psychic power Warp Time, but is always on and works with Marneus' shooting. His storm bolter built into the Gauntles of Ultramar is AP2. Marneus had 4 base attacks on his statline and is armed with two powerfists. ~you do the math

Calgar possesses Eternal Warrior without any mention of a mantle. Power armour is apparently no longer an option for him, but his "Honour Guard" are still in power armor. Finally, he's wearing his Terminator armour with an additional 4+ invulnerable save.

Honor Guard Vs Command Squads
There is a bit of confusion regarding these units so here are some other morsels we've heard. Honour Guard and Command Squads are two different things. Only "Chapter Masters" can get Honour Guard and they cannot take apothecaries (so no Honor Guard-Feel No Pain combos). Command Squads are available for company captains. The leader of the Command Squad is the company champion who gets to re-roll all hits against enemy ICs.

Command Squads

* Command Squads may only be taken for Captains (one per Captain).
* There is no sergeant option as the entire squad are veterans.
* The Company Champion is an optional upgrade character. The basic squad is 4 veterans and 1 Apothecary.
* Basic weapons are chainswords and either bolters or pistols.
* Any squadmember can replace his pistol or sword with: storm bolter, flamer, plasma gun, meltagun, combi-weapon, power sword, powerfist, lightning claw, or thunder hammer. Pistol may be replaced with a plasma pistol. Melta bombs and storm shields can be taken by anyone.
* The squad may be upgraded to ride bikes.

Librarians
Nine psychic powers:

* Avenger: essentially an AP3 heavy flamer
* Force Dome: 5+ invulnerable for the librarian and squad until the end of next player turn
* Gate of Infinity: librarian and squad Deep Strike back within 24" but with a minor risk...
* Machine Curse: shooting attack causing a Glancing Hit on 1 vehicle within 24"
* Might of the Ancients: Librarian gains strength 6 and rolls 2d6 armour penetration
* Null Zone: all enemy units within 24" re-roll successul invulnerable saves for rest of player turn
* Smite: 12" range, assault 4 St4 AP2
* Quickening: gains Fleet and Initiative 10
* Vortex of Doom: 12" St10 AP1 Heavy1 Blast; failed test results in the blast being centered on the librarian without scatter.

I don't like the swordy/speary regiments having every single different style of shields. It makes them look unorganized, which is far from the truth.

You're mixing tactics with equipment. Remember that WFB is based on the middle ages/renaissance. There were alomost no "national" armies then. You had: local levies/militia (used whatever they could aford/steal), lord's standing castle guards (whatever the local lord could aford), the king's guard (whatever the king could aford) or mercenary regiments (whatever the regiment could aford/steal/conquer). So, a field army could be made up of dozens of diferent-looking units. It's one of the reasons why flags and tabards were so vital: identification by uniform was impossible.

If you want all dressed the same, then you have to go back to Rome or forward to the 17/18th centuries...

I think he is talking specificaly about his precious high elves, who pride themselves on their organisation (and pretty much everthing else, posh bastards), etc.

But look at it this way, DragonBird, in M2TW, as it would in in real life and in Warhammer world, when a regiment loses its numbers and needs to be reorganised and completed on the field, it borrows soldiers from other regiments.

So for egzample its all very nice and organized when they land near Marienburg, but by the time they come to help lift the siege of Altdorf, they have been trough a few scraps, and have mixed regiments, damaged armour and god-forbid, broken nails.

Btw, why did you choose beastmen, Mrtn?
I got the idea for the colour scheme; yellow savannah-living lion-ish beastmen. So I started a Mordheim warband which later developed into an army. I like the beastherd models before, but this was why I started.
But now I've stopped working on the beastmen until the new armybook which should come next autumn. Now I'm working on Warriors of Chaos (the old metal beastmen I use as marauders in this army) and will continue on the skaven when they get their new armybook in the summer/spring.

@Stormy; there's only one converted model in that pic...

mrtn
Dec 16, 2008, 06:21 PM
The crossbowmen are made from the same box as the spearmen, the warrior box. It's probably good to get some of them, as they're a Core choice, and you need a certain number of Core units in an army (three in a 2000 p force).
You can probably find something of interest at www.druchii.net

I think that i will try to paint the banners as byzantine flags (like the one in my avatar). Also possibly use red instead of purple for the robes, so that the elves will look more like byzantine soldiers :)

Btw here is a cool pic of some empire soldiers using the greek and byzantine emblem:

Wow, that is a cool regiment! Great paint job!

The Chaos Dwarf is a sculpt, but if I understood correctly, it will be made into a miniature :)

I'm thinking of getting some broadsides soon...
do you think that I should get the forge world version, or the standard broadside?

A cold one knights and a black guard. They seemed too spikey for my taste.

Btw, Warseer is down...

Does anyone know any other site that has painting logs for Warhammer? I am especially interested in pics of the empire :)

Here's a battle report with pictures from a game I played this weekend. (http://z2.invisionfree.com/herdstone/index.php?showtopic=16360)

BTW Varwnos, Herdstone is a forum with painting logs. ;)

Great picture V. And a cool report, mrtn, but I am even more impressed by this:

How mrtn made a Chaos Warrior from scratch (http://z2.invisionfree.com/herdstone/index.php?showtopic=13265)

Herdstone seems to be mostly about beast herds though. No empire stuff..
