Hi all,

As you may have read in another thread, GOTM 17 has been a crash nightmare for my machine, well in excess of any prior GOTM. My video card is pretty marginal, which contributes, but still it was manageable before GOTM 17.

So for others who have had the occasional crash issues in the past, have you also found that GOTM 17 has been a bigger problem, or is it just me?

I am wondering if the new HOF mod has something to do with it ...

I wouldn't say it was a nightmare, but (looking back at my notes) I did have to be very careful.
I played this GOTM on my secondary PC (Athlon 2500+, 1Gb RAM, GeForce 6200) which is OK for CIV4 but too flakey for Warlords. I generally think the cut-price old video card is the decisive factor. Really noticed the game getting choppy graphics at regular intervals once I was a fair way in (500AD onwards). Each time it happened I saved, rebooted, picked up the game again. Don't think I actually got a crash, but it worried me.

I had my first crash ever in Civ in GOTM17. Just one so far, thankfully. But I'm not done yet, I'm in 18xx.

And I've already finished and submitted. No any crash. May be i'm lucky?;)

Seems like there was not an epidemic of crashes ... chalk it up to my wimpy video card.

Thanks to all for the input! :goodjob:

No crashes for me, I'm in 10xx-s AD though yet

I have never crashed in either Vanilla or Warlords, but this game is taxing my computer worse than ever for some reason. Takes a lot of time to do certain things and the scrolling is slower than usual.

Finished, no crashes.

I haven't had any crashes for a long, long time; the graphics is glitch-free and I can ALT-TAB at my leisure. Both warlords and vanilla is perfectly stable for me.

Actually I will agree with you. I can't seem to play this GOTM. The game crashes left and right.

I lowered the graphics settings down "super" low and tried running and it still crashes. I think it crashes when the game tries to scroll from a unit across the "board" to another unit.

For reference i'm running a pimped out machine, i have an nvidia 7900 GT video card.

I have not had a problem with any other game, or program or even different civ scenarios..... just this latest GOTM.....

I suspect there is a problem in the latest HOF mod.

I suspect there is a problem in the latest HOF mod. Is it GOTM 17 or 18 that you are referring to?

I had GOTM 17 crash twice in the same turn, which led me to buy a box with a 7600 card that completed the game crash free. Have not started GOTM 18 yet, but WOTM 08 was crash free on the new box.

That gives me an idea ... maybe redownload and reinstall the HOF mod (or even Civ and patch) Two things are different finishing GOTM 17 on the new box ... the new hardware, and a fresh install of the software.

Maybe AlanH was right about the install going "stale"?

ah, da_vinci...what laptop did you end up going with? Got an HP Pavilion dv9000 (a dv ... what else would I get? :D  ;) )

Intel Core 2 Duo 7200

2 x 1 GB RAM

2 x 120 GB SATA 5400 RPM (not RAID configured though)

HD DVD drive, HD display 17 inch diag

Nvidia GeForceGo 7600 256 MB dedicated graphics

HD TV tuner module included

Took your advice and went faster HD ... don't play any FPS so didn't see need for a mega card ... the HD video was more useful.

Plus, I could walk home with it from Best Buy ... although I could have gotten it from McDonald's because I am lovin' it! :D

Ah, the good old days...reminds me of when I lived in the US (DC area) and would hop off the subway in Crystal City to do some electronics shopping at Best Buy, on my way home...:) Well, at least my Gateway desktop PC (which I bought while there in 2001  ) doesn't make my Civ4 games crash!

very nice! I'm considering getting an HD DVD drive someday for my xbox 360, but I'm gonna wait till they are cheaper :) Its nice getting one pre-installed, I bet. I also bet your laptop could run laps around mine on high graphics settings!

Do you get back to the DC area much these days? You could always shop online at Best Buy if you miss it!
