View Full Version : Exluded Game - Yet Followed Rules

Recently I played a game in an attempt to secure an empty Hall of Fame slot. I was playing as Huayna Capac on marathon speed, a tiny world, and chieftan difficulty. I was going for a time victory, so needless to say, it wasn't very fun being in the lead by some odd 4000 points for six hours. Anyway, all went well until my brilliant luck kicked in - and I couldn't be more sarcastic. On the very last turn of the game (2050), my game crashed. This happened when I clicked "end turn" on 2049, which would have normally secured my victory, but the game thought it would be funny to cause me some misery, I guess.

Anyway, I looked into the rules about reloading. I thought I was screwed, because I knew HoF doesn't take reloads - but then I saw light at the end of the tunnel - there was an exception rule as long as I sent in an e-mail. Relieved, I sent in an e-mail. Two, actually, because I don't think my first one sent (they were to the temporary g-mail account). Anyway, I find out this morning that my game was secluded anyway :/. I'm not making this message via e-mail since my e-mail system doesn't seem to be working apparently.

Now, my reload was on 2046 AD, which, as said in the rules, I put in as an intermediate file. The game crashed on 2050 AD (the beginning of that turn, which I am pretty sure the crash occurred because it tried to auto-save and my computer didn't have enough memory left, as I had an unfinished auto-save file for 2050 AD, which was corrupted). It's not as though from the years of 2046 - 2049 AD I had this huge "ahead of time knowledge of the game". I played my turns exactly as I remembered them - with the same stupid mistakes of failing to capture an enemy city that I could have easily done. So yeah, since I followed everything exactly as stated by the rules, I'm not really sure why my game was excluded, and it certainly wouldn't be fun to repeat those six or seven long, boring hours of my life. My score wasn't even good, anyway, but I still don't want to have to repeat that.

I have a screenshot of the crash, as well.

I hate to sound like I'm complaining a lot or anything, it's just that I think time victories are, by far, the most worthless, stupid, and boring thing to go for. They don't even make sense, anyway. You just hit a certain year and automatically win... Not to mention, with it being on marathon speed, it was even worse, since, as I stated before, it consumed some six or seven hours of my life. So yeah... if that game could be changed from excluded to accepted then that would be great... My score was 4735, so it's not even something worth cheating over even if I wanted to, anyway.

Oh, right, and the entry number was 6883.

Whoops, your email arrived, only it went into the Spam folder. The first email was not received as you already said.

Honestly, rather than publicly argueing your case in the forums, I suggest that if your emails don't appear to be working, you should instead PM one of the HoF Staff.

:hmm: Looks like we're going to have to start watching the spam box more closely, sorry about that.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, too, but I didn't know who was the most active or who would be online first, so I figured it would be seen more quickly by a staff member if I posted it as a topic.

No problem - I never check my spam folder, either. In fact, a professor of mine sent me an e-mail earlier, and it went straight to spam... I didn't see it for a good two weeks, since I never check my spam mail, and I felt pretty bad about that, since it was a personal e-mail and not just something he sent to everybody.

So how should I approach the excluded game thing? I'm pretty sure I still have the files - so should I submit them again, or can it easily be altered to an accepted status?

Superslug rules on any crash exceptions. He just left on vacation but he might check in. I should point out that the crash exception normally requires that you have your autosave interval set to 1. In your favor is that it was at the end of the game and didn't alter the results. We'll just have to wait and see what he says...

Ah, yeah, unfortunately, it was set as default, which is four. Again, in either way I did the same. I'm going to set it to one in case it happens again, but doesn't auto-saving every turn cause a lot of lag or memory issues?

No. I've never noticed any lag issues with auto saving every turn and it cn save alot of dramas, even in non-HoF games.

I have my interval set to 1 and I save the last 500 saves ... sure, a bit of overkill never hurt anyone ... as long as you have the disk space available!

Alright, good stuff. I have my auto-interval set to one now. It seems a bit excessive, but in case another crash happens I suppose it'll be helpful. As it is, I never used my auto-saves when it was set to every four turns. I've mostly got into the habit of never reloading, with some exceptions, such as when I was testing how difficult it would be to do a quecha rush... For some reason, I submitted those games... dunno why - but it at least gives me a nice score comparison.

Anyway, thanks for answering that question.

Wise words. Thread closed.
