Seeing how that other thread is going, i thought I'd start a new one just for your first-time experiences!

My very first game was strange - I had one city and waited many years with very little happening.

Then another Civilization came over and went to war with me.

It wasn't a good 1st time....

I remember I was on a Illand that was small and most of my cities kept starving becauses I would build a settler and make a city like 2 spaces away but other that that I surrvived and it was a good game (I think it was the funnest game I ever played!)
My capital city was named hell and I kept using the auto move and saying "GO TO HELL"!
I had like shoved 11 cities on that small peace of land that today I would of only put like 4 or 5 and had a war with some body to the west of me and I never took there land I had been at war with them since the first time I met them!
but I had never been at war with anyone else and I had a huge millitary but most of them were just people walking around on my land waiting to kill barbarians and any other Intruder who might land on my coast so I never lost any cities! and my country was pretty stable!

I started to play civilization when colonization came out. My friends told me colonization was a great game, and that if I wanted to learn the game I'd better first play civ...
I know I played the Egyptians and that I made *a lot* of units. I didn't understand everything so I guess I progressed really slow, but I've got this picture in my head of a continent full of militia... I wonder how I payed the upkeep costs for all those units?
I guess I played like a Zulu http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

I was stupid. I got so happy when I got into peace woth the French and took over 1 Egyptian city. Then I got my city taken over and didn't know how it was taken over so quickly. Then I learned you have to have units to defend.

The first time was a long time ago... I don't remember exactly, but I somehow figured out that the catapults and the triremes were good, so I built lots of them, and had them see the world and destroy it. My few, poorly defenced cities didn't grow very well, because I didn't irrigate. And I didn't even know about the taxrate...

Poor people living in that universe...

Quite brutal, in fact. As I was used to play action/fighting games before discovering strategy, I didn't know I had to discover tech. So I build a hord (approximately 135 warriors) and conquered everything. Oh, wasn't difficult, since I only played against 3 other civ... Ok, I was stupid but it was my first strategy game. Brutal, did you say? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
But surprisingly, it was not my shortest civ game. My shortest one, was last wednesday. 2minutes30. Don't ask me how I did it, just read the Civ1 forum post http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif

Small map, 5 civs total. I mostly just cranked out units, 'cuz I didn't understand what the improvements did. Sometimes I would build an improvement because it seemed like a good thing to have in a city. It was on chieftain, so I rarely got unhappy, but when I did, I would look at the manual and it would say stuff like "build marketplaces" to get rid of disorder.

...Of course I had my luxuries at 0, so a marketplace wasn't going to solve the problem. I'm not sure exactly how I got out of that.

Somehow I ended up winning anyway, mostly by producing overwhelming numbers of troops. I somehow got to Alpine troops and just had them running willy-nilly through the countryside trying to kill things.

I don't remember my first Civ 1 game, but I got Civ 2 about a year after it came out (my computer wasn't good enough for it at the time, so it was a loooong year of waiting).

Anyway, for my first Civ 2 game I thought I'd take it easy and go for King level on large continents. I wiped everyone out, but there was a pesky French continent too far away to reach by bombers. They were about level with me on tech, but had 1/3 the number of cities. Piece of cake.

Flushed with cool new Civ 2 units and a desire to use them, I built a HUGE fleet of carriers with bombers and helicopters, as well as battleships, subs with nukes, transports full of tanks, etc. I was all ready.

Oh it hurts to think of it, even today. I didn't even know what a cruise missile WAS!

My first game I don't now how it really was but I Know this:

I Was in war with every one! (even didn't now you could allies) and I never build more than 5 city's! First until I discovered mobile warfare, I was only building city improvements (city size about 29/30) and I loved trade!

But when I had my tanks I just kept building them and sending them to the enemy!
And I still didn't know if I won the game!

And I to didn't now about the tax rate!
I just kept saying: You're running low on tax! Dude I hated that message every turn!

And not to Forget: City can't maintain tank; Unit disbanded, and City can't maintain barrack or some thing like that!

But it was funny any how!
And expectably when I Discover the cheat menu!
I just kept nuking to those city's! every unit I saw, got nuked!

Loved doing that!

By first time was on the demo version of Civ2 for the mac where you could play only utill 1000 BC ! I only remember that I lost after having built too cities Athens and Sparta. As soon as I became good enough and made it easily to 1000 BC I decided to order the game A.S.A.P. !!

But I had problems with my internet connection so I had to wait three months!!!!!!!! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/mad.gif http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cry.gif

The first game I can recall playing was the tutorial, Chieftan level, playing the Americans. I tried to go by the book, but one goody hut I hit gave me a military tech as opposed to cash. So then, I just declared war on the Sioux, instead of making peace with them like the manual suggests, and just steamrollered all over 'em.

My sister brought a hacked russian version of civ1 from her girlfriend when I was 10.

My only expirience with shomehow similar games was Warcraft, so I placed my militias around the city. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
I thought that Legion is the best unit, and I was amazed when I saw AI Knights destroy my empire.

The thing I loved the most was waiting for the palace to be built... http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I never really understood the concept until I got civ2, couple years later. But even then, I played in a very stupid way.

I became very good at this when I came to Apolyton, and only then I discovered the full possibilities and fun in this game.

I started off playing the tutorial as the Americans as well and then decided to continue to see what everything was like. I remember several things from that failed experiment:
- I had no idea that a city in disorder was not producing anything. I just kept saying to myself "Ah, who cares about that mayor anyway - let him flee".
- I had no clue what any of the wonders did. I thought I should try to build some and ended up being first to Leonardo's Workshop. I had no clue what was happening to all of my units. Very confusing.
- Ships? Why do I need ships? What the hell is a trireme anyway??
- I kept approaching barbarians in hopes of talking to them. They weren't very talkative.
- I think I was in despotism the whole time.

Ah well, I learned by doing and that helped in the long run.

The first time, let's see....I was playing Civ1 (abandonware). I had two militia, and I tried to move one, but it only moved one space! Dammit! Then suddenly the second one decided it was his turn to move! I was so mad! What the hell is this?

And I thought phalanxes were really strong with their big shields, so I sent dozens of them to attack the enemy.

Played my first game at my cousin's. He didn't like it that much, and said all the time "Can't we play another game?". I played the Greek civilization, and was actually proud (!) of having five cities! FIVE CITIES! In my second game, I was proud of having 1 million population, didn't know how to erase pollution, didn't know why that bloody revolting city of Thermopylae never got to build that Temple, didn't know why I never got scientific discoveries...and was playing on Chieftain.

My first time I was making roads all over the place (because I could) and became upset when an enemy unit rode right up and smacked my city, so I dcided to build fortresses EVERYWHERE, on every square, I figured that would stop them - little did I know, fortresses needed to be occupied...

Also I never changed governments, and attacked everybody, even peaceful neighbors, when another Civ gave me money or tech to do so - and then I couldn't understand why everybody hated me.

My first game I followed the tutorial game and kept on playing as the Americans. IIRC I wiped out the Sioux eventually and I did go on to win by spaceship, but of course I had no clue how many structurals I needed or anything, so that took like forever. "Still not ready to launch? Damn, have to spend 5 turns building another structural to see if its enough" http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/lol.gif I do remember losing a Trireme with a Vet Dragoon on it because I thought once I had discovered Navigation that ALL ships could leave the shore.

my first game of Civ. I or II or CtP?? well all were generally the same.

Civ I
I started as the French, and tried to build an empire to europe... except I forgot to put good defencive units in my 4 cities, and the Russians got me in the end <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0>

Civ CtP
after learning from Civ I I had a good start. I created a rather ok empire, and made it last untill EOG {End Of Game}

Civ II
my most recent purchase in summer of 99. I was the russians and was sucessful in creating the Soviet Union, or its geographical equalvient. of course by 1800 I was overrun by having no money, and hostile armies. I had avout 2/3rds of my cities and about half of them were in revolt, and only Moscow was a city that was any good.

now I am just waiting for Civ III...
