View Full Version : Uninstalling problems
Princess Clover May 06, 2007, 01:06 AM Hi..I got Civ4 a while ago..ive never been able to play it, because it always said i never had the right disk in- and i was never able to get around it! i even traded my copy for a new one because i though i had a faulty disk or something but still no luck =/
I gave up, and uninstalled it later.
But now after looking on the internet for ways around the stupid disk problems, i think i might have found a way- but the only problem is, when i go to re-install the game it says i already have it installed.
It asks me "do you want to uninstall civ 4" When i click on setup from D/open disk.
When i click on auto play, on the 'pre menu' it gives the option of 'play' even when i uninstalled it months before!
If i click on play, nothing happends.
If i click on 'uninstall' (when i hit set-up) My screen crashes and goes blue and dose a physical memory dump!
I cant find anyway around it either! i dont know how to manualy install it (if its even possible) and when i click on the auto uninstall my computer crashes!
Dose anyone know of anything i can try/do to get around it?
Or anyway i can serch for what-ever is telling the game its installed?
Iv tried a serch on my computer for anything Civ, it came up only my CD drive, and a empty folder that i tried to copy and paste files from the CD to the folder trying to manually install searchsearchit =/
Can anyone please help?
Mabye im just not destent to ever play this game if i had this much bad luck, or somthing! =(
On a wird side-note, it let me patch the game, even when i deleated the fraxis folder too =/
GVBN May 06, 2007, 07:08 AM Deleting all Civ4 files on your computer isn't enough. You have to delete Civ4 registry entries as well, otherwise your computer will think that Civ4 is still installed on your system. In other words your computer uses the registry to keep track of installed programs
First open registry editor
Start -> Run... -> type regedit
Search the registry for anything Civ4 related and delete those entries
Princess Clover May 06, 2007, 08:11 AM Oh, ok i'll try..i hope i don't mess up..messing with the registry files always scares me >_>
GVBN May 06, 2007, 08:20 AM I don't have Civ4 installed right now so I don't know which entries you should delete
Try looking in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software.. There should be a key for Civ4, Firaxis or 2k Games
Princess Clover May 06, 2007, 08:29 AM I deleated it..the menu changes from 'play' to 'install' But when i click on 'install' it still tries to remove it =(
GVBN May 06, 2007, 08:37 AM Does Civ4 show up in the Add/Remove Programs list?
Princess Clover May 06, 2007, 09:23 AM no >:(, iv' deleated everything i can find- and it still thinks its installed :(
Petek May 06, 2007, 03:09 PM Here are two more things to try:
1. Do you have a folder named
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}
If so, rename it to
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}.OLD
and then try to reinstall Civ4. (I'm suggesting that you rename the folder instead of deleting it so you can revert the folder to its original name if neccessary.)
2. If that doesn't help, do you have a registry key named
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}
If so, rename it as above and again try to reinstall.

Princess Clover May 06, 2007, 07:02 PM =( I looked, i cant find that file anywhere =(
Petek May 07, 2007, 05:27 AM OK, I should have mentioned that the InstallShield Installation Information folder is hidden. That may explain why you're not finding it. To unhide it, take these steps:
* Open Windows Explorer.
* From the Menu, select Tools, Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under Advanced settings, Hidden files and folders, select the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select OK.
Can you now find the folder mentioned in my first post?
Princess Clover May 07, 2007, 02:28 PM no =( I already un-hidden it a long time ago =(
Should i just give up? =/ mabye its really not ment to be...:(
GVBN May 07, 2007, 03:41 PM Try this
1. Insert the disc
2. Start -> Run...
3. Type D:\Setup.exe -ig{blah} (Assuming your drive is letter D)
Petek May 07, 2007, 03:45 PM no =( I already un-hidden it a long time ago =(
Should i just give up? =/ mabye its really not ment to be...:(
I have a couple more ideas, so don't give up yet!
* Delete as much as you can from your temp folder (usual location is C:\WINDOWS\Temp).
* Do either of these folders exist on your computer?
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
If yes, delete them. Also, just to be sure I understand, did your computer have the registry key mentioned in my first post?
Princess Clover May 07, 2007, 05:31 PM Yay! its installing! ^_^...i hope it dosnt crash before it gets done..>_>
I hope the new file to run it without this stuipd CD works..otherwise i would have just wasted both of your time @_@
Oh no it crashed and everything went blue..'physical memory dump." Just like when i tried to uninstall it =/...the icons came on the 'start' menu, but no folders on my C drive =(..and when i hit play, it dose a phyical memmory dump..and reboots...=(
Is it just my computer..? =(
Princess Clover May 08, 2007, 01:30 AM I finally got it to stop crashing once, so its installed now..only thing is that it thinks the disk isnt in! arrg its the problem i had and made me uninstall it -.-
Even with this no cd thing i found :|
How come it needs the cd anyways? -,-
Omg...i think it might be a consperiacty now!
I downloaded a new'fixed exe' (i think thats what its called) You are supost to not need the cd i think, it worked! I got farther than i ever got before- it seemd about to launch the game but then i got this message
"GFC failed to initialize the primary control theme"
It was loading 'Init engine' And it just crashed...what the heeeeeck!
I think somone high above hates me or somthing :(
