View Full Version : Civ4 Flag Button Maker
asioasioasio May 06, 2007, 10:00 AM Special version of Buttonmaker - just for making flags. It contains file for Photoshop and Gimp. It's a little bit different (you need to choose Multiply in Layers) so i've put detailed tutorials how to make it inside .zip.
It's fast and easy method for making your flag buttons like civ4 orginal
Here is example:

Chuggi May 06, 2007, 10:58 AM I've already made my own .psd for making flags ;) I probably should have uploaded it before though.. anyway I like the last button :D
asioasioasio May 06, 2007, 11:25 AM Maybe your is better or easier :) it's never to late to make something easier for community :)
Chuggi May 06, 2007, 11:43 AM Yours is better, I compared them  Yours is the first one in the pic, then mine is the second, and the last one is just the australian flag with no shade on it.

snipperrabbit!! May 06, 2007, 12:47 PM I don't understand layers in Gimp. Can you tell me how it works or just make the pdn please. (DotNet is so user friendly !)
I want to beg nationality of the last country in the second row !
asioasioasio May 06, 2007, 01:33 PM Lol - but what unique unit this new nation should have? :)
Try this about layers

Gimp is good program - maybe to tough in the begining but enough powerfull to be useful :)
I could make paint.net version, but not today
snipperrabbit!! May 06, 2007, 01:48 PM Nice duck on the link !
The thing is that I didn't find layers in gimp but they are evident with dotnet. I will convert for myself . I just hope I'm not the only one appreciating paintdotnet.
EDIT : Tried to export layer by layer but it doesn't work.

Ok I'll try to convert it today :)
About gimp probably you have turned it out
Go to Menu Dialogs / and choose Layers
You can also may try Gimpshop - http://gimpshopdotnet.blogspot.com/ wich is more intuitive (i use it @ home) and more convienient
asioasioasio May 08, 2007, 01:30 AM I can get pain dot net to work
old version gets communicat that this beta version has expired.
When i install new version the instalation file doesn't work - the instalation stops. Sorry i can't help with version for paint dot net
snipperrabbit!! May 08, 2007, 02:00 AM It's now version 3.05, I think it needs desinstallation first OR more unlikely a framework update. If you PM me conversion process you use I can do it myself. You mlust know I've encountered problems with some transparency layers I was unable to convert properly Or if you have individual layers in BMP, GIF, JPEG , PNG, ... send me please.
Darkgrammer Jul 01, 2007, 04:52 PM You forgot the best countries on earth :p ;)

asioasioasio Jul 02, 2007, 12:22 AM I've made around 60 flag-button right now and still counting :p. It was hard in the begining to reconstruct the shadows on the flag, but now it's very convinient :)
Welshdragon Jan 20, 2008, 11:33 AM These are great, I like UK, Germany, and EU
snipperrabbit!! Jan 20, 2008, 03:04 PM Will be ported to paint.net tomorrow. Just need fine tuning on the settings. ;)
Gaius Octavius Jan 20, 2008, 03:12 PM Er... this may be a silly question, but why do you even need a custom flag button maker? Isn't pretty easy just to use a program like DXTBmp and overlay a scaled-down flag with the button interface?
snipperrabbit!! Jan 20, 2008, 03:19 PM GO, :mischief: see this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5407732&postcount=4).
Gaius Octavius Jan 20, 2008, 03:24 PM Ah, I see the difference now - it has little waves and things. Understood. :D
asioasioasio Jan 20, 2008, 11:56 PM Thx Welshdragon
Yup in style similliar to civ :)
Ekmek Apr 10, 2008, 10:19 AM asio,
I tried your gimp file to make this button but wheever I save to dds it flattens the image. What am I doing wrong? And why does the gimp file have all the flags in there instead of just one?
snipperrabbit!! Apr 10, 2008, 01:09 PM Ek, you can choose active layers and then do a chain work to get a load of flag buttons.
asioasioasio Apr 10, 2008, 11:15 PM Yeah - click on the eye symbole (near the flag with brazil on layers window) - to make them invisible.
To don't have flags unflatten, you need to put your layer with graphic above 'Background' and below 'Layer 4' (where the rest of the flags are).
If you don't have windows with layers. When you have flag_buttonmaker_gimp.xcf opened. Go to Window -> Layers
Ekmek Apr 11, 2008, 10:01 AM in gimp I have to go to dialogs-> layers. I added a new layer to your xcf then anchored that layer then i put the eye on it and then took the eye off brazil. so the eyes are only on the flag, the borders, background, etc. then when I try to save as a dds it says that "the images are not the same size so a volume map cant be written" but I get that error all the time. So I save a a DXT3 and format: default, but Save: is greyed out and I cant change it but it's locked as selected layer. generatemipmaps and swap red alpha are both unchecked. I think the greyout area maybe the problem. any idea on how to undo that?
