View Full Version : A problem about the One City Challenge
ViterboKnight May 07, 2007, 02:36 AM Everyone agrees that the smaller the map, the easier the game.
So, even if I'm playing between Prince and Monarch at the moment, sometimes I like to jump at a higher level for a smaller map game.
I've just played a deity duel game, with the "OneCityChallenge" option turned on.
Well after both I and my opponend settled our first city, about twenty turns have elapsed, when I see my opponent founding his second city.
WHAT THE...!!!!!!
Why "One City Challenge", if he can settle a second city and I cannot??????
p.s. Warlord, v.2.08
Thedrin May 07, 2007, 02:39 AM The one city challenge option was included becaue it was a popular variant from previous versions of the game. In variants you only limit your own options, not the options of your opponents. The one city rule only applies to the human player.
Edit: Incidentally, the reason why 'everyone agrees that the smaller the, map the easier the game' is because it increases the number of cities that your opponents can build.
Infantry#14 May 07, 2007, 03:23 AM try 18 civ on duel with occ, then practically (not guarantee) every civ has one city. Make sure to have creative to get more land
thordk May 07, 2007, 03:28 AM but with 18 civs you won't see the joys of culturally stealing your enemy some cities. 18 AIs on duel size is pretty much a war game.
oh wait, OCC... don't care about my comment ^^
Martinus May 07, 2007, 07:21 AM Yeah, what others said. Incidentally, it kinda sucks that cultural victory is impossible with OCC, but I suppose it would be too easy.
Same goes really for buildings like cathedrals, which can't be built (you can build Oxford University, Globe Theatre and similar buildings, though).
feldmarshall May 07, 2007, 12:25 PM i've also heard of 2CC, 3CC, etc. Is there any option on it or you only limit yourself?
Unionfield May 07, 2007, 01:11 PM I love the One City Challenge, but I always get my ass just... unbelievably savaged by the computer. Savaged.
Greencardman May 07, 2007, 05:21 PM I love a good OCC game, I even wrote an article about it. But the person who posted about the idea of a 2CC or 3CC game intrigued me. Are there any mods out there that would do this? By that I mean put some of the advantages of a OCC game (more than two national wonders, etc) but allow you to have two or three cities. Or make everyone only get two or three cities. That would make for an interesting game dynamic.
KMadCandy May 07, 2007, 05:48 PM Yeah, what others said. Incidentally, it kinda sucks that cultural victory is impossible with OCC, but I suppose it would be too easy.

it is technically possible to win a cultural victory in OCC, if you have PAs enabled. you get 3 cities total between your 2 civs to legendary ;). i've never tried it but i know that it's been done. i imagine that gandhi is the best to use as your PA partner since he likes shiny culture stuff anyway. you're allowed to either settle artists in your PA's cities, or bomb them, or both, i can't remember now. and you can keep one space ship part in your build queue somewhere to make sure he doesn't launch .
i do miss cathedrals a lot sometimes. they really really crowd you, and they do their best to pump out culture. i've had games where my city has all the national wonders i can make, as many world wonders as i could grab, and 5 religions in it with the temples and monasteries (part of why i prefer OCC at the higher levels, since they will send missionaries to you). but at least one time with that set up, i lost two tiles in my BFC at the very end of the game :(! curse you asoka! if i could build cathedrals in addition to the hermitage that wouldn't be an issue.
then there was the OCC where i was at war, one opponent left, and i had no oil, no uranium, and no horses. and no chance to get any, ever. i ended up with elephants running around with my mech infantry. my marines travelled around on galleons. even gunships require oil. you never notice how much you rely on something until it's gone .
when i do culture flip their cities, i find it odd how i get no message. i do get a message at the revolt. but when the actual flip occurs, since it's an auto-raze, no message, the city just goes poof. and eventually i notice "oh, there's city ruins there now, spiffy." one thing that i never realized was so useful in normal games until i played OCC ... the list of the other civ's cities in the trade window! since you can't ever take any other cities in any way, their cities don't show up in the window, even redlined. so you have no idea how many they have, unless you keep your map up to date. it's quite an odd feeling.
OCCs are really really fun for me. and they're so quick to play, micromanaging is a cinch.
boarder May 07, 2007, 10:36 PM I like OCC as well, but I do it a bit different, Ill use the map editor and give me all the resources so I am going to have a awesome city, turn it up to the highest level and see how quick i can wipe everyone out and also see if I can build every city improvement.
A fun quick game on standard maps with 2 extra civs added.
Gotta be on the highest difficulty though if your going to give yourself all the resources, but it can still be a challenge especially if your trying to win by conquest as early as possible and build everything you can.
