Hey! I'm new here! I am starting to love Civ ever since I played the Civ IV demo and am going to play I, II and III when I get the Chronicles edition. Anyway, I have been trying to install Civ IV (another copy I bought that I'm going to give to my friend, perhaps), and when the installation nears its end the data2.cab error comes up saying 'cylical redundancy' right around the time the Hagia Sophia stuff is loading. :(

I'm no cybermage, so I don't know how to find my comp specs and such, but this ain't no gaming computer--it's a *laptop* not geared for gaming though I have a better computer in Korea, I want it to work *now* so I can distract myself from my evil essay. which I'm probably going to finish soon anyway... :P

Oh yeah, and the Civ IV demo ran nicely on this computer even though Gamespot said I wouldn't be able to run Civ IV due to the videocard lacking (no idea how to find out which videocard I have though).

My edition of Civ IV is the Special Edition one with the two game CDs tightly packaged onto paper instead of jewel cases. I got it on eBay, and despite its mint condiiton, I think the CD might have grime on it that is preventing the game from working--it's a minor thing that looks vaguely like a fingerprint but is solid, like mud or something, but I can't say for sure. Ugh. I can't return this either. I'm studying at college and the nearest Best Buy is miles away. Furthermore, I don't have a receipt, since I bought this on eBay. I'm guessing BestBuy requires a receipt to return/exchange, right? -_-

So, help please?

Oh yes, and I HAVE looked in the search forums and such. I guess I should try copying the files to my hard drive or something, but I have NO idea how to do that, so a step-by-step process would be nice. Stop saying nothing, people! I'm new here! I want to be able to play the game! XD

EDIT: 2K Games is very unhelpful with their emails. I have NO idea why Bioware and Firaxis sought out 2K to publish this good game--2K doesn't seem to be interested in real support, and also seem like amateurs, no offense. I hope they prove me wrong but so far everything they do smells of 'we don't care about your support--just make sure no background programs are running'. As if we wouldn't know *that*. Bah.

So how do you suggest I make it unscratched without returning the CD?

Short of having Super Man do his "Fly around the world really fast to rewind time" thing, I don't think you can really un-scratch a CD.

But doesn't toothpaste work? And some other materials apparently work to heal scratches, though not completely, it would allow the disc to function. But I don't know how much water to apply, so...

there may be a replacement policy where you send in the cd and get one back for five or ten bucks.

also can you see the scratch on the cd? how serious is it? is it a gouge?

"There may be" but I'm kinda sure they wouldn't be that generous unless I got really lucky....:(

The scratches are thin and don't seem serious, but there are several, and one circles around the CD somewhat. o_o

Google for repair scratched cd. You'll find lots of articles with helpful tips, including how to use toothpaste!
