View Full Version : Capturing wonders of the world
Crazy_Ivan80 May 12, 2007, 05:26 AM Could someone confirm wether or not wonders of the world that are captured get destroyed automatically, instead of when a city gets razed?
I started to wonder cause I captured the statue of Zeus yesterday but it did't show up anymore in the city where it was built, and in the wonderlist.
If this is so, it should be -imho- changed. Wonders shouldn't be destroyed unless it's deliberatly.
Even more, WotW should retain their culture boost even when captured but at a greatly reduced rate.
So instead of the 8:culture: (like the Sixtine Capel) it gives to the city+civ that originally built it,it should give like 1:culture:, and then slowly increasing as per the normal algorithm that guides the thing.
That way you'd make WotWs more interesting to fight for, as well as representing the fact that a) there are still people with links to the culture that built it and b) people of the conquering culture can appreciate other people's achievements too and come to see them as their own heritage. After all, say to an inhabitant of Nîmes that the Maison Carrée isn't part of his cultural heritage and you'll get a stare of disbelief returned.
BLubmuz May 12, 2007, 08:05 AM Same happened to me with the SoZ.
Nice your idea to retain some culture, too (and good arguments to sustain it).
Harrier May 12, 2007, 03:57 PM Just a guess - but was the Wonder obsolete
Do not know if signifficant - just a shot in the dark.
Walter Hawkwood May 13, 2007, 01:49 AM Statue of Zeus is a bit "special" in that it requires pagan temples. If you capture a city with SoZ from another civ, you most likely don't share the same pagan temple, and it's getting demolished (though, this is somewhat of a guess from me). I'm sure that you can't capture SoZ if you have any religion. That's the way it works.
Crazy_Ivan80 May 13, 2007, 10:57 AM mhh, that may be it.
what about the world wonder doctrines? do they disappear too?
Walter Hawkwood May 13, 2007, 11:00 AM Yes, they're meant to. I think it's logical.
jefmart1 Jun 28, 2007, 03:04 PM hat would be cool is if there was a pop up that notified you that you had captured a World Wonder when you take the city.
"Congratulations! You have gained control of the Sistine Chapel." for example.

But buildings wont get destroyed if their required building is destroyed. For example you can capture a city with a forge but no sawmill. At least as I remember.
Anaztazioch Jun 30, 2007, 06:35 AM Pantheon - its got plundured everytime it was captured. Its amazing it actually stands.
University of Sangkore - After Marocan(?) invasion it has never regained its greatness.
Inverted Jun 30, 2007, 11:01 AM But the Pyramids are still standing. Try destructing those. :D
Anaztazioch Jun 30, 2007, 01:24 PM How many still stand and how many are ruins.
Besides, no one tried to destroy them. Why bother kicking pile of rocks, when you can just loot whats inside those. Besides, rocks dont burn.
Inverted Jul 01, 2007, 06:17 AM Thats what I meant, and you cant say that they dont have cultural value. Actually anything that can make it into a game today as a wonder must have high cultural value still, or you wouldnt know it exists (existed).
Anaztazioch Jul 01, 2007, 12:42 PM I know you can say that Rome adopted Greek culture. But how far Rome was actually form Greece ? It was Greek colonies made on Apenins. "second Greece" or "small Greece" as they called it.
But what did Arabians did with Persians after conquering ? Gondeshapur was razed (thats why it is obsolate with Divine Rights btw.).
Zoroastrian Holy Shrine was completelly (?) destroyed and had to be moved to differant place.
The Great Wall is a ruin a side from some parts open for turists (but its damaged from time rather invasions)
Many wonders were damaged by time or destroyed by invasions. Today they are often reconstructed. We know about wonders becouse there was a nationalist movement in XIX centuary (i think thats the centuary), and to raise nationalist feeling, be proud of nations history, morale, and turist wealth. Without such moevent, wonder would be forgotten and new ones would rise in their place.
Crazy_Ivan80 Jul 01, 2007, 03:50 PM I know you can say that Rome adopted Greek culture. But how far Rome was actually form Greece ? It was Greek colonies made on Apenins. "second Greece" or "small Greece" as they called it.
Greater Greece actually. Magna Graeca.
And it was mostly a coastal affair.
Anaztazioch Jul 01, 2007, 06:50 PM Greater Greece actually
heh, nothing like translation.
Coatal or not, it was rich and had the culture. It must had affected tribes that formed Rome.
Inverted Jul 01, 2007, 08:02 PM Okay, but from all of that only one thing tuns out. Whether a wonder was respected by the people who conquered it or not completely depended on the culture, leaders, era, their mood, the weather, etc.
So the realistic way would be letting you decide to keep it or raze it, but since noone would raze it, its pointless to ask.

Yeah, becouse players know what profit a wonder gives, and they allways want it to stay, as there is no "bad" wonder.
Crazy_Ivan80 Jul 03, 2007, 05:45 AM It must had affected tribes that formed Rome.
It most certainly did. Mainly via the Etruscans, but also the local tribes and eventually Rome directly (once the citystate became bigger)
Anaztazioch Jul 03, 2007, 07:01 AM Hmm.
If anyone can bring up a system of capturing/razing/pillaging wonders, that will:
1) work
2) be relistic (so that no option to save or raze wonder, as player will "allways" save it for its income)
3) ballanced
4) logical
5) simplest possible
6) usable by AI
7) presented to "how would it look in game"
If those 7 parts are not fitting or missing etc. such component is more to harm the mod rather than help it.
Inverted Jul 03, 2007, 08:42 PM Heres one, make all wonders belong to one category (financial, religious, etc.) and connect each category with one leader trait. If you have the correct trait you capture it, as you value it, otherwise it gets razed.
Wonders are already in such categories that defines which great person they "produce". However I think there are more traits than great person types.
Problem is that this needs tons of balancing, while the outcome is not too serious. Just face it, in most of your games you wont capture a city with a non-obsolote wonder.
Lets see:
1) work - maybe
2) be relistic - kind of
3) ballanced - can be
4) logical - of course
5) simplest possible - not sure
6) usable by AI - yes
7) presented to "how would it look in game" - now really...
:)
Anaztazioch Jul 04, 2007, 06:58 AM Will need coding and Mexico allready has full hands. so even if yes. I tinn be impossible to get it done in next release.
