Who needs an "official strategy guide"? The strat articles you find here at CFC are far more detailed and comprehensive, albeit not nicely put together in one volume. :)

I like to read elsewhere besides in front of the computer and printing out that many articles is tedious and costly. ( alot more than a guide)
To each their own.

My statement did in no way intend to depreciate the way you do things. :) I agree that it is tedious to print all the articles, even if I can't follow the cost argument (what printer/paper do you use?? ).
Personally, I like to have my browser open, tabbing and rereading the articles in part, then tab back into the game and give things a try. :)

Ahh, alright. But I think he looks A LOT better as a younger prime minister, does he not?
Prime Minister (http://www.teachersparadise.com/ency/en/media/c/ce/cdgaulle.jpg)
President (http://www.chemistrydaily.com/chemistry/upload/7/76/Degaulle5.jpg):old:

.. and Boudica, Elizabeth, Catherine and Isabella look a LOT sexier as pin-up girls than queens/empresses :D :D

:queen:

PS: The link to the "president" picture doesn't work..

No, he was "Président du Conseil" (i don't know in english) it isn't Prime Minister, this title born in France with 5th french republic, when De Gaulle was President

De Gaulle, forever was Prime Minister as Charlemagne forever was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire

Ok, sorry.. in Italy the titles: "President of Council" and "Prime Minister" are equivalent..

HP/Cheap

Plus the added fact that most of the opinions in threads here are written for certain levels of play such as Prince or higher and I do not play at those levels so they are completely worthless to me, but the books are always written with the novice or just above that level in mind.

I think that Musketmen are completely useless in the game, as Grenadiers are a lot stronger (12 instead of 9 HP) with an inherent +50% attack bonus vs. Riflemen, and Musketmen are immediately succeeded by Grenadiers in the tech tree.

I think that Musketmen should be improved in BTS by adding them some inherent bonus such as +50% vs. Archery and Melee units, then they would be better against these units (9x1.5=13.5 HP) than Grenadiers with 12 HP. Another way to improve them would be to give them +1 HP and, say, +25% vs. Archery, Melee and Mounted units. This would pretty much resemble the 'stone-paper-scissors' system implemented to the units in the Ancient Era.

The same could be applied to the French Musketeers with 2 MP, then perhaps they would compare to the English Redcoats or the Russian Cossacks in usefulness. Ottoman Janissaries could also come with e.g. +1 more HP compared to the improved Musketmen. This way, the French and the Ottomans could have decent unique units in the game.

I don't think a hard bound strategy guide would be useful for a game like Civ. Mainly because once a new patch comes out a good chunk of the info becomes obsolete.

Please read a little the other threads before posting. The lifespan of Musketmen will be extended in BtS, grenadiers will come later, and cavalry will require rifling too, so musketeers should be much more useful in BtS.

Whoops, what good is it to update my files if I don't post them.

Hehe, looks like the Info Center is getting a tad large. I had to readjust the information again as I hit the 30k limit mark. Please note that I wasn't able to add the http://www.civfanatics.net/methos/bts/updated.gif in some of the posts due to "too many images" error. They are listed in the index though.

I noticed some things I missed, such as the Final Frontier info from the screenshots. Will have them up in a bit.

Personally, its all about the strategies and playstyles in the book. Yes, the info like cost of a wonder and such would change but the cost of a building/unit/wonder would not change the effectiveness of the strategies involved. IMHO:D

There are two things that failed to appear on the list of new units and capabilities for BTS:

1. The inquisitor unit. See modcomp by TheLopez http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=187623

2. Ranged Bombardment capability for seige units and ships. See Dales ModComp http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=198670

Failure to include these in BTS is a BIG dissappointment. :(

OR - another way to look at it is by your experience level. My wife can barely play CIV4 and Warlords... if you are very inexperienced then stay with the first two as BTS has a lot of intricacies that my wife doesn't want to tackle for a while and Warlords is a Great Game. :p

I'm not too sure, but I imagine that the release in China will be delayed some. I think Firaxis will likely have to edit quite a bit of the content before releasing it in China. They'd likely have to make major changes in the WWII scenario, unless Firaxis doesn't include the scenario in its Chinese release... :hide:

NextWar
http://www.civfanatics.net/methos/bts/updated.gif

This scenario is set in the near future with futuristic weapons and it may be played in two ways, like a scenario or as a mod.

Scenario

You play a pre-created situation, where Earth is divided into five mega-empires locked in an escalating struggle for dwindling resources.

Mod

You play a typical Civilization game where you have access to the futuristic weapons when you learn the appropiate techs.

Units:
Cyborgs (cybernetic warriors)
Dreadnoughts (huge mega-tanks)
Walkers (human-driven giant walking robots)

Oh-my-god! I missed that piece of information about Next War being playable as a mod. I can't believe it. I wonder if there are techs provided apart from the ones you need to build the Giant Death Robots ( :woohoo: )? -as in (I nearly dare not say it aloud) a FUTURE AGE MOD? That would be so uber!
I'm off cleaning my pants :mischief:

No need for Warlords to play this.

The policy with this, and probably even the case if they were to make a third expansion (not that that is too likely), is as simple as this:

All core/epic game changes from the previous expansions are included (new leaders, gameplay mechanics, techs, etc.) but not the scenarios.

I am already thinking about my new strategy for modern era.. :D .. i don't like to loose units in combat.. i use the same units in all attacks to increase their levels.... and I never send too many troops for invasions.. i send just what i need to conquer and secure the teritorry. Sometimes, when i have more time to play, i even group my troops in divisions, etc.. :crazyeye: .. tactical play.. i never lost a war in Future Age (after i have all technologies..) :king: .. i can't wait for the new units.. and btw.. i have some questions about the new units:

I seen the paratrooper has range 5.. so i can use it only within 5 spaces ? Or ? if yes... i already think the range is too small. And i think the Carrier should transport Paratroopers too.. will be nice to paradrop from the carrier.. and realistic.
Anti-Tank infantry and Anti-tank gun ? Hmm... what about the Gunship ? It is a anti-tank weapon too.. so we will have 3 now ? I guess the new ones will not need Oil, they will be more powerful than Gunship but verry slow on movement..
The airship (that zeppelin).. can move free over the oceans and seas ?

Paratroopers can drop from a fortress in BtS, have your workers construct one within 5 plots from your target and you're good. ;)
And aircarriers don't have the capacity to carry or launch the aircraft delivering paratroopers.

Anti-Tank infantry and Anti-tank gun ? Hmm... what about the Gunship ? It is a anti-tank weapon too.. so we will have 3 now ? I guess the new ones will not need Oil, they will be more powerful than Gunship but verry slow on movement..

There's only one new anti-tank unit: the infantry you mentioned. And IIRC the gunship has moved a tech up so is available later.

I think the unit is mission-based like fighters and bombers.

What is the actual definition of "gold" or "going gold". I'm guessing that means when it's exactly done with and completely
flawless? :hmm:

A game 'goes gold' when the master copy/copies (usually a gold disc) is stamped. All releases copies of the game are made from the master copy, so it can't be changed after that occurs. Since boxes/manuals/cases/etc are pre-made in anticipation of going gold, release usually follows shortly afterwards.

Your option, but if I were you I'd check to see when Amazon says the release date is (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000PCLBE2/civilizationfana). :D

It's funny how Amazon has said the 10th for all this time and now change it to the 23rd. I guess they should have listened to the Info Center. ;)

See my earlier posts (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5636506&postcount=808). Amazon didn't change the date, 2K Games did.

EDIT: It's also beginning to look like the Info Center was wrong (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=230024) ;)

I have a feeling the release date has at least partly to do with when they can have enough copies made to fulfill preorders in addition to getting hundreds of thousands more copies out for stocking store shelves on the release date.

I think the 20th is the ship date and the 23rd will be the on-shelf date.

Mine just changed from July 16th with a July 23rd delivery date to July 23rd with a July 30th - August 1 delivery date. What I have seen with DVDs or CDs that come out is that they ship in such a way so that the item arrives the same day as it comes out in stores.

This time around we're getting three versions: one each for the Pacific and Europe starting in 1936 and one just for Europe beginning a little hotter in 1939. Players can opt to play as the big boys in the conflict or try for a more limited involvement with a minor power like Siam, Norway, the Balkans or the Dutch East Indies. (All the civs make the Foreign Advisor screen a little crowded, but you 32-player types should have no problem with it.)
Will all the civs in the world have animated leaderheads? Or just the more important ones? I'd be really surprised if...

If that's true for all scenarios (like the picture of the Anglo-Saxon leader in the Charlemagne scenario) a lot of modding will go on to add a lot of civs with those new leaderheads. I'm really amazed a lot of scenario specific leaderheads are added who are then not added to the regular game itself.

2. when you play the mod you can play with both regular Civs and Next War Civs.

Portugal and Holland

Portugal and Holland are civilizations that are choked in the Europe but develop really well through their colonial empire. They usually have 1 or 2 big cities enough to run a colonial empire, but of course, if Spain takes Lisboa, Portugal collapses .
The Portuguese AI will focus their colonization efforts in the Brazillian coast and some spots in Africa. In counterpart to this, the Dutch go to a lot of places but mainly for South Africa, Caribbean, New York area and Australia. The colonization efforts of Japan in Indonesia will be halt by the Dutchs.
Is this in a scenario or something?

You won't need Warlords to run BTS, and all the Epic game features (not the scenario mods) of the previosu EP will be included in BTS.

They will most likely be replacing the intro music, as they did for Warlords. Baba Yetu (if that's what you mean) was good, but in my view the Warlords theme was even better. Hopefully BTS's will top both.

Leonard Nimoy was popular for the speaking roles, but for some reaosn Firaxis haven't hired him for BTS. However, as far as I know, Sid Meier will only be speaking in the five or so new technologies included in BTS, not replacing the voice for the other techs.

I read this funny blog about a guy who hated macs. I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.

In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.

Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.

Pc's are wimpy little vulnerable machines that get viruses and often crap out on you, no offense guys. And they can't run Mac OS X either...so we're more flexible. And If any of you really, and I mean really, have used a modern mac, you'd know that they are very high quality machines. Don't compare PC's and Macs because first:
It pisses me off, second:
It's stupid.
If you guys want to be jerks, go ahead. But the truth is you haven't really had a true experience with a mac.

I really wish Amazon UK would update their status...I hasten to think that it might change from "July 20th" to "July 24th", and since I live in the UK it could be longer. Actually, it said that the game is coming on Thursday 19th, and we should receive it Friday/Saturday depending on where in the UK we live. Just I don't know whether to trust that date with the discrepancies with dates elsewhere...

How many of you guys pre-ordered it through the internet? I think most of you guys did...so would'nt it be faster to get it in Toronto? I'm going up there the day it supposedly comes out in the US. But a lot of Canadians here (on the forum) say they get it either a day faster or a day after the US because of "American Delays" (have no idea what that means). I'm just going to try to get it while I'm up there. I don't really know what the chances of them having it or not are. If they don't, on my way back down I'm going to stop in some remote NY State town and get it at a Best Buy. Are there alot of civ players in Toronto? Or in NY State? Yeah, mine still says 7/26 - 28.

Also, so far it looks like Vista will not be supported. From the official site:

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
1.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent/better
512 MB RAM
128 MD Video Card w/ DirectX 8 support (pixel and vertex shaders)
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
CD-ROM Drive
1.7GB of free hard drive space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ series

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
1.2GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent
256MB RAM
CD-ROM Drive
64 MB Video Card w/Hardware T&L (GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
1.7 GB of free hard drive space
Direct X 9.0c (included)

SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS:
Windows 2000 (plus Service Pack 1 or higher), Windows XP (Home or Professional) (plus Service Pack 1 or higher)

*Requires Sid Meier’s Civilization IV to play

Dammit...I really want to upgrade my computer, but I don't want BTS to have problems (talk about ironic)...I suppose I'll wait to see if Vista players have problems.

When I asked about whether they had specific days they get their shipments in, they said that was the 23rd. The only thing I can accurately say is that both Civ4 Vanilla and Warlords work on Vista. Not through my own personal experience, but several players in the HOF have stated they play and have submitted Vista games to the HOF tables. I would imagine that if both Vanilla and Warlords can be played on Vista, I don't see why BTS wouldn't. Just my opinion.

Not trying to start a flame war, but from what I gather Vista is a BUGGY version of XP with more of a MAC OS look and feel.

Sounds cute but until I hear its a LOT more stable, I'm fine with XP.

I love how Microsoft has even crippled some games so they'll ONLY install on Vista, even though there is no technical reason for it to be required (Geometry Wars Retro).

My sister has it, as do some of the computers here at work. It's very stable and it doesn't look or feel anything like Mac, imo.

All of these comments from users playing cIV on Vista make me wanna just buy the new machine...but...I just can't bring myself to do it! Maybe I'll borrow a work laptop and see how it does on that. Not trying to start a flame war, but from what I gather Vista is a BUGGY version of XP with more of a MAC OS look and feel.

Sounds cute but until I hear its a LOT more stable, I'm fine with XP.Well it *is* a lot more stable than XP.
I learned that firsthand with a dualboot system and a corrupt memory module (which I only found out later).
Where Vista did crash once in a while and even gave me a BSOD, XP got corrupted beyond repair (BSOD's and a 'missing' HAL.dll).
Also with crashing drivers Vista *is* a lot more stable (because of a different driver-model (running in user-mode instead of kernel-mode).
^Yeah, I've heard that about Vista too, and you can't run any old software on it either.I don't know how far back you want to go, but as long as SimEarth, Theme Hospital and SimTower works, I'm fine.
For older games (like Ultima Underworld) I use DosBox :)
And it is REALLY buggy and has tons of holes in it. It's too new to trust.Well the Vista I have on my computer isn't buggy at all. Never noticed anything.
Besides, with the UAC it's a lot safer (just like OSX, which also has a form of UAC).
(Edit: Or were you sarcastic? My apologies in that case!)

So, unless somebody has something to say they didn't just 'hear somewhere', I'd say:
Civ4 runs fine on both XP and Vista.
Let's get back ontopic. Let's talk about BTS :)

I have both a Mac and a PC, which runs Vista 64-bit. As I mentioned before, Vanilla and Warlords run fine on it. Vista and OS X aren't very similar IMHO. I find Vista easy to use and stable, especially since I push it by using a 64-bit system (which necessitates use of some unsigned drivers), using SLI and overclocking both the CPU and GPU's. IOW, I invite crashes and get the occasional BSOD, but I get the occasional SWOD on Mac as well. I run Civ on the PC because it's a desktop, while my Mac is a MacBook Pro, so the graphics just can't keep up.

I find the whole Mac/PC debate kind of amusing. Mac is the Yin to PC's Yang. Because of its closed system, Mac "works." But I love the tinkering that PC's allow because its so much more customizable. I consider myself lucky to be able to use and enjoy both.

Civilization IV: Meier Beyond the Sword for PC
This item will be released on July 25, 2007. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives.

But, GameSpot still says 7/23:

Game: Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (PC)
Release Date: Jul 23, 2007
