It seems like this setting is fair to the AI. It just reduces to number of times of regenerating the map to get a descent start.

View Full Version : Why not balanced resources? Murky May 15, 2007, 04:09 PM It seems like this setting is fair to the AI. It just reduces to number of times of regenerating the map to get a descent start. superslug May 15, 2007, 04:43 PM We discussed that once. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=184476&highlight=balanced+resources) Based partly on the poll results, and largely on my own feelings I ruled against. Resource possession is a critical element of the game and I see no reason to diminish it. Denniz May 15, 2007, 04:48 PM Yeah, it stacks the deck a little too much. I think everyone gets one of the strategic resources close to their starting position. I don't think that ever happens in normal resources games. There you will always have to look farther afield for something you need. Murky May 15, 2007, 05:03 PM Ok, sorry for not searching for the topic in advance. Regenerating the map until you get the best start is similar to reloading. It's something the AI can't do, but it seems necessary if you want to compete in the Hall of Fame. If you had balanced resources then the AIs would have a better start to begin with and no map regeneration would be necessary. playshogi May 15, 2007, 10:30 PM Regenerating the map until you get the best start is similar to reloading. However, there is still a lot of skill involved to make a favorable start lead to a great ending. Example, despite popping mining, bronze working, pottery and metal casting from huts, I could not even beat the average finish date in the current G-Major 11. I've been having problems getting a descent map for the G Major 11. Either my start is poor and there are resource in the region or the start the great and there are sparse regional resources. In one game, I started with gold, lots of food and marble. It was surrounded by jungle and desert. Thrallia May 17, 2007, 09:07 AM Jungle is great for cultural games, in my opinion. It always has grassland under it, so once you have IW and workers, you can clear it quickly and have a large area available for cottaging. Misotu May 17, 2007, 10:33 AM It might be quite interesting to have a Gauntlet where balanced resources were actually specified as a condition ... I've never played this setting, but the description sounds intriguing <shrug> Methos May 17, 2007, 10:41 AM It might be quite interesting to have a Gauntlet where balanced resources were actually specified as a condition ... Considering that Balanced Resources are against HoF Rules, I don't see that happening. All gauntlet games (so far anyway) follow the HoF Rules. WastinTime May 20, 2007, 12:39 PM Balanced resource maps are not that special, but it would probably be overused (like Capac). Hey! maybe we should ban Capac?:mischief: We used Balanced a lot in the beta gauntlets. You still need to regenerate maps (or use mapfinder). I always thought of Balanced as meaning you will eventually get Copper, iron, coal, uranium, aluminum, etc. I don't think you get a balance of other food and commerce resources. Misotu May 21, 2007, 04:56 AM Sounds like, if nothing else, it would avoid the Space Race situation where, after hours of play, you find that the nearest coal and aluminium are on the other side of the planet :) Murky May 21, 2007, 08:40 AM Sounds like, if nothing else, it would avoid the Space Race situation where, after hours of play, you find that the nearest coal and aluminium are on the other side of the planet :) I'm not sure if it means you always get a specific resource in your area. It may just mean that the resources are evenly distributed so that each area gets about the same number of resources. WastinTime May 21, 2007, 04:10 PM Balanced Maps "This map script will ensure that all players have the key strategic resources within four plots of their starting location." (from the creator of the map scripts) I don't think this includes stone/marble. Just what I said earlier about iron, coal, etc. |
