View Full Version : A speculation thread: Ubs and UUs for BtS civs

I saw some threads about the upcoming expansion, but no thread about the UBs and UUs for the new civs.
The confirmed civs are Babylon, Portugal, the Dutch and some Native Americans. Maya and Bizantines seem very likely to me too, and I am asking myself what kind of Unique Units and Buildings the new civs could have.

For Babylon I think the Ziggurat would be the best UB, but the only building it could really replace is the temple and this is a little problematic because you can build 1-7 (in theory) or 1-4 (more realistic) per city. I guess the best solution would be that the Ziggurat doesn't replace a temple but gives you a temple without religion: a building which can be constructed with Priesthood and doesn't require a present religion in your cities but gives you 1 happy face and culture and the option to have a priest.
For the Duch I can only think of a harbour with additional trade income, but that would be pretty much the same as the Cothon.
Coffee Shops are another possibility ( one happy citizen and +1 trade route ["tourists" from germany] ) but I don't know what building they could replace.

Your ideas ?

Maya(if they're even included)

UU = Atlatl (= spear thrower from Conquests)
Replaces archer
Benefits = ? (an attack bonus would be cool. 50% strength when attacking would allow archers early mayan archers to be somewhat offensive units...I don't know if this even suits Atlatl throwers well, just a thought to make an archer UU be less defensive a.k.a. boring.)

UB = Ball Courts (though they were Mesoamerican, and not just Mayan, they Mayan were more well known for them)
Replaces coliseum
Benefits = ? (again, I haven't really thought of potential benefits yet.)

We know two now: Dutch Portuguese get Carrack as a UU (upgraded Caravel? Galley?), Native Americans get Totem Pole as a UB (sounded like an upgraded Barracks that provides bonuses to archers)

How about dikes for the Dutch. Replaces walls, boosts food production.

What if the totem pole replaced the statue? I read it as an "extra barracks" rather than a barracks with extra experience.

"Another leader who has some nice synergy between his traits and his unique building is Sitting Bull. Not only is the Native American leader Protective, which gives him powerful archer units, but the Totem Pole acts as sort of an extra barracks for archer units as well."

Totem pole could be an obelisk replacement

Totem pole could be an obelisk replacement

I thought that in Warlords the statue replaced the obelisk, except as a unique building for Egypt.

Yeah, I think the Totem Pole will replace the Monument and maybe give +2xp (just a guess) to Archers (or Archery units??). That would make for an interesting expansion - being able to build a cheap buildings (30 hammers) that produces culture and gives Protective Archers another promotion. That'll be cool.

Maya(if they're even included)

The Maya were confirmed over in the article discussion thread. There's a screenshot featuring their leader as well.
