View Full Version : Starcraft 2 V'S BTS
bds May 19, 2007, 04:19 AM Starcraft 2 v's BTS
If both BTS & Starcraft 2 were released tommorrow and you only had the cash for 1, which would it be?
...
I didnt like starcraft, and am not in the slightest interested in a 2nd one... what about the rest of you.
edit:
btw ~ www.starcraft2.com ... in case you didnt realise.
Tronicoz May 19, 2007, 05:10 AM hard one, but i'l think i'l go for Starcraft ^^
Kissamies May 19, 2007, 05:14 AM RTS just doesn't work for me except when it's very small scale and has pause button, like in some RPGs.
R8XFT May 19, 2007, 05:24 AM BTS for me :) .
thordk May 19, 2007, 05:31 AM rts holds nothing against tbs, so it's bts for me.
what a freaking sentence Oo
Moon Pine May 19, 2007, 05:38 AM BTS - I`ve got Company of Heroes for RTS needs ^^
Watiggi May 19, 2007, 06:23 AM btw ~ www.starcraft2.com ... in case you didnt realise.Holy ****. How long has this been around???
StarCraft 2 in a flash.
flyingchicken May 19, 2007, 06:58 AM 10-2-0, going for BtS. This is the CivFanatics forums, what do you expect?
I would like to imitate Watiggi's reaction, albeit my computer simply refuses to handle newer games. In fact, it already has a few problems running Civ4. Hm, hm. I voted for BtS.
King Flevance May 19, 2007, 07:12 AM BTS for me too, now had it been Diablo 3 that was announced, it would be a different story.
bds May 19, 2007, 07:23 AM ...what do you expect?
I expected more votes for beer & boobs.
Holy ****. How long has this been around???
The website was put up about 30 minutes before i posted. They have been hinting at it all week, but information & screenshots were also leaked earlier due to a preview at some korean thingy.
BTS for me too, now had it been Diablo 3 that was announced, it would be a different story.
I would like a d3 as well.
Lucky The Fox May 19, 2007, 07:42 AM BTS, no question. Though it'd be a lot harder to choose if my compy could run SC2.
Watiggi May 19, 2007, 07:49 AM Hehe, I'll make it so that my computer will run SC2 and run it well I might add .... even if it hurts the bank  I guess I needed a good excuse to go all out on buying a new system. StarCraft 2 would definitely fit the bill :) I'll look into a new system when the system requirements come out though.
Damn it looks fantastic!
Grimus May 19, 2007, 09:23 AM Holy ****. How long has this been around???
StarCraft 2 in a flash.
Seriously!!! omg... when was this announced and revealed? I guess I've been living under a rock!!
King Flevance May 19, 2007, 09:44 AM It was only announced today. I was waiting to see if this could perhaps be the announcement of Diablo 3 Blizzard has been hinting around. They are still schedule to have another "huge announcement" later this year. Considering WoW already recieved an expansion this year, and now Starcraft 2 has been announced, perhaps D3 is next. :D
The blizzard fanbase was already pretty sure Starcraft 2 would be announced this year. They are about equally sure that the other announcement will be D3.
tonyf12 May 19, 2007, 10:40 AM It is a civ forum so you can't say you didn't expect the outcome (23 BTS v 3 sc)
Watiggi May 19, 2007, 10:48 AM It is a civ forum so you can't say you didn't expect the outcome (23 BTS v 3 sc)True, but it might also be because they see StarCraft 2 as a hypothetical while BtS is a guarentee. They probably don't realise that it actually is in full production (and looks like it's quite developed... at least in the cinematic/gameplay trailer point of view anyway).
I tell ya, the gameplay components in the artwork/gameplay trailer have the same 3D look and feel of Warcraft III! Man this is fantastic! The huge numbers of Zerg look awesome too. They seem to have built a system that allows for massive armies (it even says it as a high light)!
The full gameplay trailer is going to be put up tommorrow (20/5 - American time I presume) according to the website.
bds May 19, 2007, 10:48 AM It is a civ forum so you can't say you didn't expect the outcome (23 BTS v 3 sc)
Actually i expected starcraft to win, normally when you mention a blizzard game fanboys come crawling out of nowhere just to defend their precious.
flyingchicken May 19, 2007, 10:51 AM But this forum is full of older people who have been fans of Civ since it was created so long ago.
King Flevance May 19, 2007, 10:53 AM Not to mention Warcraft/Starcraft has a larger fanbase than the Civ series.
However, Chicken makes a good point.
Pe Ell May 19, 2007, 10:54 AM SC2 no contest. Sure I like civ4 also but one expansion more or less isn't going to change things. I can still play warlords after all. But SC2 I've been waiting for since Brood Wars was released. And now it's soon here! :king:
bds May 19, 2007, 10:56 AM I tell ya, the gameplay components in the artwork/gameplay trailer have the same 3D look and feel of Warcraft III
There was a starcraft easter egg in war III(in game terrian units fighting zerg), IMO it was pretty obvious that they started developing it way back then with the same engine.
ElZahir May 19, 2007, 11:03 AM there, I voted for sc2.
though, to be honest, it would depend on the price. If sc2 is $60, i'm getting BTS.
Sjaramei May 19, 2007, 11:04 AM Hmmm... tough choice. I would go for Starcraft 2 first though. (since i got Civ4 + Warlords for my civ needs anyway) It looks awesome :)
But argh! Need both! Give me both! Right now! :p
Looking at the poll after... would be interesting to see who picks what depending if they are multiplayer players or not.
(single player CiVer here, but multi player at heart ;) )
Dida May 19, 2007, 11:54 AM starcraft 2 hands down. Civ4 is nothing compared to the original starcraft and if sc2 is anything like the original starcraft, it will blow civ4 out of the water.
GoodSarmatian May 19, 2007, 11:59 AM Starcraft2. It looks like it will be the game I hoped for:
It won't have any heroes like in WW3, but much larger armies and Protoss, Zerg and Humans are going to be more different from each other than in the original SC.
SpockFederation May 19, 2007, 12:29 PM I would buy BtS. Played some starcraft in my past, but got bored with it (never cared for single player, and multiplayer gets too repetitive; was a matter of who clicked the most; bounds and stuff were fun, but got bored eventually with those).
Starcraft 2 will have enormous sales when it comes out. The entire nation of Korea will camp out 1 week in advance in front of their stores to get the game.
that_student May 19, 2007, 12:51 PM Hmm this would pose a serious problem for me. Starcaraft and civ are my all time favorite PC games.I have waited for SC2 since I was fifteen. In fact the only reason I found about civ was I got tired of brood wars and decided to try out something new. I guess if it came down to it I would go for bts but I'm glad I don't have to choose one or the other in real life.
ldb88 May 19, 2007, 02:50 PM Starcraft was one of the best games ever made, in my opinion, and THE best RTS. SC2 for sure.
PimpyMicPimp May 19, 2007, 05:30 PM No contest, Starcraft 2! Although I'm sure BTS would be the better game, since it probably would have more interesting features and Blizzard is really just WoW LTD now, I'd have to buy it since Starcraft was one of the first PC game I ever played. That, and we've been waiting 10 years for it to come out :P
thenooblet22 May 19, 2007, 05:37 PM What an unbiased place for such a poll!!
Sir Jaref May 19, 2007, 05:50 PM Warcraft 4 - YEAH!!!
Diablo 3 - OMG YES!!!!!
Starcraft 2 - Meh....
Beyond the Sword - Absolutely! ^^
Watiggi May 19, 2007, 10:38 PM What an unbiased place for such a poll!!Maybe it was a subtle way of making people in the General Discussions aware of that fact that StarCraft 2 now exists. :)
There was a starcraft easter egg in war III(in game terrian units fighting zerg), IMO it was pretty obvious that they started developing it way back then with the same engine.Hmmm. Where was this again? I vaguely remember something like that but can't quite place it.
PimpyMicPimp May 19, 2007, 10:48 PM Civ and Starcraft are two totally different types of games, so I'd have to go with Starcraft since Warlords could keep me satisfied, at least until I could save up enough for BTS and have both :D
Dan Quale May 19, 2007, 11:19 PM The answer is no contest for me "beer and boobs", while I will buy both, they will occupy far less of my time than beer and boobs.
Watiggi May 20, 2007, 03:47 AM The answer is no contest for me "beer and boobs", while I will buy both, they will occupy far less of my time than beer and boobs.A night only goes for so long.
Any body notice that the SC2 website is down? Some simple error by the look of it. :(
RegentMan May 20, 2007, 04:08 AM The two games I have spent the most time in my life playing, in order, are:
1. Civilization II
2. StarCraft
If both were released tomorrow, I'd go for StarCraft II. I absolutely cannot wait to continue the storyline.
flyingchicken May 20, 2007, 04:21 AM As a side note, if Starcraft 2 (not "II" because it's "techno") drops the realistic art gig (as opposed to the cartoon style of Warcraft since WC:O&H to WC3:TFT) then I will vomit at Blizzard for ruining that sole distinction.
bds May 20, 2007, 04:36 AM As a side note, if Starcraft 2 (not "II" because it's "techno") drops the realistic art gig (as opposed to the cartoon style of Warcraft since WC:O&H to WC3:TFT) then I will vomit at Blizzard for ruining that sole distinction.
What realistic art? take a look at the screenshots... number 2 looks exactly like 1 only in 3d.
cf_nz May 20, 2007, 04:39 AM BTS - I`ve got Company of Heroes for RTS needsSame here. I have zero interest in Starcraft 2.

Given the premiss of the OP I'd go for BtS - I enjoy a good RTS every now and then (especially the ones by Blizzard) but I've never known one to have the same insane replayability value as the Civ games. However, knowing Blizzard it will be a couple of years before StarCraft II (:p) is released yet - plenty of time to explore BtS and save up money for the computer upgrade a state of the art RTS undoubtedly will require.
flyingchicken May 20, 2007, 06:44 AM Don't kill me, I was just hoping! X_x ...Aw, that sucks. But I guess the slash-font is okay.
Anyway, after seeing the screenies, I doubt there will be any fancy schmancy physics engine in the game (the opposite of hoping!). And let's face it: combat with big monsters (like Ultralisks) is just not fun anymore without fancy schmancy physics!
EDIT: In fact, by the looks of it, this is just going to be Starcraft with better graphics and modificationabilitnizing.
Duuk May 20, 2007, 08:02 AM I'll 100% for sure be buying both.
Axemen rush KEKEKEKEKEKEKEKE ^^
Colossian May 20, 2007, 01:50 PM BTS is not a new game but Starcraft2 is a new one.
Colossian May 20, 2007, 01:51 PM Can u put Civ5 in poll?
bds May 20, 2007, 02:22 PM BTS is not a new game but Starcraft2 is a new one.
So?
Can u put Civ5 in poll?
No. As a rule of thumb i never put more or less than 3 options in a poll representing what i consider to be good(bts), bad(sc) & neutral(beer) so the results aren't useless & vague like some of the 5 to 7 option polls i see about the net.
sikk May 20, 2007, 05:52 PM I have zero interest in Starcraft 2.
Same. In fact, the hype is starting to annoy me.
Moon Pine May 20, 2007, 07:17 PM Same. In fact, the hype is starting to annoy me.
Same.I just saw the demo video of StarCraft 2 and lose all interest in SC2 - I like the RTS in which I can blow enemy troops into the tree and destruct every thing on the map ^^
Saim May 21, 2007, 01:45 AM Crap... I acidentally voted the wrong one (BtS).
Seriously, BTS is a new expansion, StarCraft II is a new GAME.
bds May 21, 2007, 02:43 AM StarCraft II is a new GAME.
So??? its just the same old sh#t only in 3d this time. I find it rather ironic that BTS actually has more new content than that of a whole new game.
flyingchicken May 21, 2007, 02:53 AM ^
I find that I have to agree with that statement, despite its vulgar nature. So far as the teasers go, Starcraft II is nothing but a hybrid of Starcraft and Warcraft III. Honestly, Blink?
However, if anything's going to make Starcraft II popular, it won't be astounding new gameplay mechanics or its smooth style graphics (I just loved the 3d when I saw it)--it's going to be the story.
...was that old man in the concept art Jim Raynor? Did the story move on so far already? HL2 story syndrome!

It will be the koreans that make it popular :P
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php
...
I'll probley come around to the game once its released, a game'a'holic's gotta have the latest. I just wish the zerg & protoss looked as cool as they did in the original, the 3d has taken away some of their character & zerg no longer look slimy but rather mechanical.

King Jason May 21, 2007, 04:45 AM Starcraft 2. Only due to the fact that I haven't even bought warlords yet because they'll inevitably pack Civ 4 and all of it's expansions into one package that'll be the price of the original, or more likely, less. So I'll just buy that for the best bang for my buck to see where the game has been taken.
Now, if that aforementioned package was being released tomorrow alongside Starcraft 2 and I had enough money for only one. Then I'd buy the Civ pack.
Ogedei_the_Mad May 21, 2007, 04:55 AM BtS for me. I liked StarCraft, but I've pretty much grown out of RTS.
Now as far as the popularity of StarCraft in Korea goes - I'm currently living in Korea and so far, my impression of it is that while it is insanely popular (where else do you have a bloody StarCraft channel??? :crazyeye: ) compared to the US, the way American and Western media portrays Korean StarCraft fandom is totally overblown. Not everyone plays StarCraft here. ;)
bds May 21, 2007, 05:19 AM Not everyone plays StarCraft here. ;)
Do you feel alone & lost amongst the starcraft fanatics. :p

Actually, Blizzard confirmed that Starcraft II will be using the Havok physics engine.
Sorry guys, but I love me some Blizzard games. As much as I like playing Civ IV, and Warlords, BTS would have to wait in line behind Starcraft II.
bds May 21, 2007, 07:19 AM Actually, Blizzard confirmed that Starcraft II will be using the Havok physics engine.
You've got to be kidding? Biggest waste of processing power ive ever heard of for a rts.
flyingchicken May 21, 2007, 07:22 AM On the physics engine:
Now that changes everything. If they manage to mix in a physics engine and Starcraft gameplay, balance it all up into a neat little bundle...I quote Alexander the Great of Macedon: "--it would be way cool!"
I wanna see Ultralisks crashing into a group of marines sending them all flying into the air with its great tusk-claw things, battleships falling into the ground in a blazing fireball turning Zerglings into red goo, Wraiths doing dogfights instead of "stand and shoot" all of the time...wishy wishy wishy...:crazyeye:
...Anything less will be boycotted!
PimpyMicPimp May 21, 2007, 09:42 AM I'm very excited, no matter what they do I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I completly suck at RTS' multiplayer, but I still love them to death. Such a loser :(
The physics has me intrigued, too. Mmm, destruction in all dimensions.
The thing that makes me angriest about Starcraft 2 is that the beta test passes will inevitably go to people that attend Blizzcon, and when you live in Saskatchewan, it's freakin' impossible to go :(
Watiggi May 21, 2007, 10:02 AM Anyone have any ide of where it is in development? I read that they were moving into closed beta. If that's true, then how long (Blizzard time) would it be before it comes out?
I know Blizzard doesn't do things in terms of time, more in stages, so I guess I'm asking: How many stages until release and how long - based on their past experience - will these stages roughly take? Is this an end of year thing or a couple of years off thing?
Vael May 21, 2007, 10:05 AM Knowing Blizzard it will be a couple years. Definitely wouldn't expect to see it out before Fall 2008.
andrewlt May 25, 2007, 03:43 PM Starcraft 2 easily. It might be closer if it's SC2 vs. Civ5, but BTS is only an expansion.
GoodGame May 25, 2007, 05:59 PM BTS in moderation with choice #3. Actually that whole set in moderation.
Starcraft 1 put me to sleep.
denogginizer May 25, 2007, 07:08 PM So...BTS will be $29.99 probably...SC2 will be either $49.99 or $59.99 + PC upgrades.
BTS FTW.
King Flevance May 25, 2007, 07:24 PM I would be willing to bet that SC2 will be in better release condition than Civ was this time around. I doubt PC upgrades will be neccessary if you can run Civ 4 on default settings without compromises or slowdown.
Brother Vicar May 25, 2007, 08:46 PM Civ games always have a longer life for me then other ones. Plus Starcraft 2 removed all the grittiness from the series. While it makes it less of the Warhammer 40k ripoff it use to be, it also makes it seem more generic.
Darkus May 26, 2007, 06:31 PM bts i don't know what star craft is anyway so it would be bts
bds May 26, 2007, 06:53 PM While it makes it less of the Warhammer 40k ripoff it use to be, it also makes it seem more generic.

Its been in production for nearly 4 years (source: they said they started around when they released Frozen Throne) and they got a beta out there. It will definitely be out BEFORE Fall 2008.

It will definitely be out BEFORE Fall 2008.I'm now a little skeptical. It's been said in a few of the reviews that it's currently pre-alpha. In the gameplay video (the one with the narration, on the StarCraft 2 website), "that it's only a demo, that nothing final and that there's a lot of balancing work ahead". Granted that probably would be the case with a beta game, but it just feels that there is a long road ahead still.
I also suspect that they will be spending a lot of time play testing the MP aspect of it in order to preserve the professional tournaments. After seeing what I saw in the demo, I just hope they don't go the nerfing route. I hope they find a way to keep that awesome synergy I saw and balance it with the other races (hopefully as equally aweseome) synergy.
....
I tell ya, with that Protoss Mothership being in the game, I wonder what the Zerg Queen will be :D
I hope she's a big mother (******!) who can lay hundreds of eggs or maybe she'll be a mobile hatchery or something. :D:D

I don't know what site, but Blizzard has said they already have all three races playable. For what I seen so far, they just need some graphic tweaks and fix any balancement they find. So I'm expecting it anytime before 2009.
...
Blizzard also has said they want to keep the races very distinctive. So, if they keep the Protoss Mothership, don't expect superunits for the Terran and Zerg.
flyingchicken May 27, 2007, 03:35 AM On the graphics jump: No way is the graphics improvement on final release going to be that big, unless they want people to complain that their expensive Alienware PC's are dying. Anyway, the graphics they've shown are pretty good, sleek and smooth (still too WC3-ish, but good 'nuff).
marioflag May 27, 2007, 04:56 AM I would buy BtS but i agree the poll is totally biased, in any other forum except it SC2 would won hands down.
About SC2 even if it is at an alpha or beta stage i feel a bit underwhelmed probably because i expected SC2 to be the king RTS with a lot of innovations in the genre but:
-graphic and unit models doesn't look better than in CoH, and how can they even not make SC2 take advantage of DX 10 (actually they don't know) if they will release the game in 2008 or even 2009?Even CoH released in 2006 will take advantage of DX10
- Gameplay doesn't seem at the first news so much innovative. No unit cap is a bit C&Cish, and some of the innovations introduced in CoH doesn't seem to be introduced in SC2 from the few info we have!
The only thing i'm sure is that they will deliver a wonderful single player campaign
flyingchicken May 27, 2007, 05:47 AM The only thing i'm sure is that they will deliver a wonderful single player campaign
Hear hear. Let's have faith in Blizzard for that.

Improving the terrain doesn't mean complete overhaul with more detailed graphics. It just means changing unit graphic styles (as everyone complained about it too 'cartoony' or 'WCIIIish'). The Starcraft Alpha/Release are improved graphic styles, not new high-tech details you need to upgrade for.
Watiggi May 28, 2007, 01:28 AM I don't know what site, but Blizzard has said they already have all three races playable. For what I seen so far, they just need some graphic tweaks and fix any balancement they find. So I'm expecting it anytime before 2009.Yeah, I remember reading that too. They are all playable, but they have to balance it all. I would imagine the prof. players would have a high level of input into it and I can see that it might take a while in order to get it right.
Blizzard also has said they want to keep the races very distinctive. So, if they keep the Protoss Mothership, don't expect superunits for the Terran and Zerg.Yes, and they also said that the Zerg and the Terran also have a "super unit" - but they are different in that they aren't restricted to only having one of them. This to me says that they are not as powerful as the Mothership, but are powerful in their own right. I can just see a Zerg Queen being a mobile Hatchery - just like the Phase Prisms are mobile Pylon/Teleporters.
The game synergy with the Protoss is clearly about getting units into battle quickly. The zerg appear to be about mass numbers and so a Queen that can produce quickly or something would, imo, be really cool.
...I just hope they don't take too long releasing the other races information or thereabouts.
(I hope the Carrier is still in...)
MSTK May 28, 2007, 01:32 AM I'd hardly call the poll results unbiased. But it's a fun comparism.
bob rulz Jun 03, 2007, 11:58 PM StarCraft 2, for sure. As much as I love Civ, I don't think I could anticipate any game as much as I'm already anticipating SC2.

Head Serf Jun 09, 2007, 05:58 PM Starcraft 2. No decision. Come on, I can wait a few months for an expansion, but Starcraft 2? The sequel to the second greatest game of all time?
Lance of Llanwy Jun 09, 2007, 07:49 PM This question is pointless. I'd run to the bank and get enough money for BOTH and enjoy them as they are...separate entities who're enjoyable and immersive in their own unique ways...

Scrooge Jun 12, 2007, 11:59 AM STARCRAFT 2 hands down and no other RTS has worked for me
CIVILIZATION 2 used to be such a good game...
Lapoleon Jun 12, 2007, 12:30 PM Starcraft all the way, Civilization is great, but it just hasnīt got the great story arc that Starcraft has. The most exciting about BTS for me is all the scenarios. But that is just because Iīve played so much Civ 4 that I want something different at the moment (So therefore I'm playing the Civ 3 Escape from Zombie Island scenario :p ).
Normally I'm not a huge fan of RTS games, but there are some titles that have a special place in the pantheon of games, and starcraft is one of them.
As far as the release date is concerned, the site of my local gaming store says january 2008, which will probably be postponed once we get that far.
JMaltman Jun 12, 2007, 12:31 PM SC II was the only RTS game I ever played much of. I do worry about the upgrade requirements though... and the main reason I enjoyed it so much was that it was the first game I ever played in my res-net while away on exchange in university... and now I'm much closer to the having kids point in my life... so the RTS experience doesn't seem like something I'll be up for as much anymore.
And the Civ series has taken up WAY WAY more of my time in the grand scheme of things, and is just a better fit for me.
But thanks for the OP, its interesting to see this finally on the horizon - its been a LONG time.
