Which should we do first? Personally, I'm going with Vanilla because:

a) Everyone has vanilla
b) Using Warlords wouldn't be worth the effort (except vassal states)
c) BtS isn't out yet

I agree with you about Vanilla. It would make things easy for you and the other developers since it is more simplistic than the other versions; besides one not being out yet and the other soon to be outdated because of BTS.

I think Warlords would fit Star Wars well. Great Generals especially would fit the concept. However, it doesn't seem to be that good choice in the current situation. BtS might be better if it contains Warlords features relevant in this case. It's supposed to have some improved modability too, I think. Could do planning and graphics until it comes out if we are not in a hurry.

I will say vanilla.
If we have that done perhaps we can make the upgrade to Warlords or BtS later.
vanilla seems like the best base to start from

You can do a lot of the grunt work in XML right now and then switch to BtS and use some of the new goodies. Warlords is a horrible choice IMO since it offered nothing new and BtS will include that nothingness. ;)

Espionage and Corporations alone would make the Huts and darker civs much more enjoyable to play. Not to mention the space-type scenario (however implemented) should have stuff to borrow.

The New Frontier scenario . I wait for it tremendously as I have great plans to base a mod upon.

I think vannila, as everyone has it (including me), like you said, and not everyone has, or is intending to get, Warlords. Beyond the Sword sounds good, but it isn't out yet, and no one is sure how good it will be.

vanilla-most people, including me, dont want to waste $ on warlords, which only improves the already too good ancient times. Beyond the Sword's release date is too far off, so lets just stick with vanilla

There is a scenario in BtS that has to do whit space:

Final Frontier

"Communications with Earth have gone silent. As leader of one of the few terrestrial colonies scattered throughout the universe, discover the fate of man's homeworld while extending your control over unexplored star systems. Barter or battle with your fellow colonists as you expand to the edges of the universe, into the Final Frontier."

The Final Frontier space scenario is almost like an entire remake of the game all over again. There's a brand new tech tree, loads of new units and a brand new terrain! We wanted to show the community who have been great, how crazy you can be with the scenarios. Final Frontier takes place 100 years after earth - after contact was lost with earth... as you play through the scenario, you'll find small clues about what happened to earth. It's a lot different to the base game of Civ. Instead of conquering the world, you're conquering all of space. Instead of building a city, you're colonizing a star system. You can go into each star system and plant buildings on each planet and assign population to them. Then there's Star Bases - they're kind of like satellite cities, they can harvest resources from an asteroid field, spread the influence of your city and they can also defend against attacking units. There's pop up hints which will tell you all about the new units and there's also the Civilopedia with an explanation on the concepts.

Scenario Features:
Asteroid Belts: reduce transport speed and increase defensive abilit
Black Holes: new terrain type
New Technology Tree

BTS, to take advantage of the Final Frontier assets

Yes, it would be very easy to make a SW mod directly from FF. Just change the ship selection a bit and give them new graphics and rename some concepts. The values work much like the discussed species as religions option allowing unique buildings.

Don't think this team is going to take such an easy way out, and at least some ground scenarios are needed for the true SW feel, but the assets will be useful all the same.

i think we can use some things form FF but we need realy planets with ground fighting and stuff so that we can have a cool an very big mod.
not a mod that you play a few times and then its borring :P

I really think that you should start from FF though. Especially since there is nothing done after at least an year, you have to start from somewhere and FF is a good start. If you want ground combat then why not make so that conquering a system cannot be done by space ships but by land troops that can be carried in space ships ?

You also need capable and active artists for all units... that's not easy to find.

Their is no reason not to start from FF. The problem in our minds is that a lot of FF is not quite right for what we want the Star Wars mod to be. In my opinion, it should be more taking inspiration from FF than actually using it in the mod.

We've been thinking a lot about using FF and how much to use it and we still haven't come to a decision about it. There are advantages and disadvantages to using it as a base, so I think that we will use it as Sovin_nai said and probably use at is inspiration, but not to base the whole mod on.

I've been thinking about how to do ground units. I think that the star system idea in general would be good. With the ground units, possibly allowing them to occupy the planets in the solar system, and fight over those, would be interesting. It would allow better ground combat, yet also allow solar systems, which are quite good ideas.

Should use a ground map for Jedi, Sith, Clones, and Droids. Or Rebellion and Empire.

Jedi and Sith could be Hero Units like in Fall from Heaven

Wow slow down there. We're already making a version for BtS.

Maybe people have gotten the wrong impression here, but this mod is very much alive. We have a new team working on it and we are still in the early stages, but I think that we will have a great mod for everyone soon.

Sweet!

I've been watching this mod for like a year now just never thought it was gonna get finished.

I'm EXTREMELY happy to hear that your planning on completing it though...So sorry about the sharp "this mod is never gonna happen" comment ;)

Don't worry I had the same cynical frame of mind as you did. This especially came from not hearing anything about the mod and some of the actual modders seeming as if they were trying to run everyone else off.

We should go for BTS. Final frontier mod as basis we could make a very dynamic mod with very little effort. My opinion is that we should keep the whole thing simple and not make the project too big, that way it will never be finished. The largest work is remaking the tech tree, after that itīs just making new civs, units, buildings and remodeling the civics more aproppriate for star wars theme. After the basic mod is done and released, we may start thinking about python additions, scenarios and 3d models. We should not start building the pyramids from the top. ;)

I think vanilla Civ 4 would be a good starting point. I know I might be off topic, but could there be religions as in sith and jedi with all of the races people naturally associate with SW (like the Wookies). You could look to Star Wars: Empire at War for the potential ship ideas. Each race could get attributes like the civs. The planet screen screams civ lite and the layout could be similar to a naval game moving ground units in ships.
