View Full Version : Gondor Unit Pack (22 May 2007)
Olorin0222 May 22, 2007, 01:48 AM Well, here are my first humanoid units. They are a Gondorian swordsman and spearman unit, made specifically for LOTM. Major kudos to Curious Labs for offering Poser5 for free, Utahjazz7 for his amazing tutorial, and Plotinus for uploading some basic sword-swinging animations (without which the swordsman may not have been done).

Dunedain Swordsman: - this is a recolor of Kinboat's Woodsman. I just colored the cloak gray to give him a Dunedainic feel. However, this unit could serve in any number of ways. Updated 5-23-2007 with a new civilopedia image

Knight of Dol Amroth: Updated: 9 July 2007 - This unit comes both with and without civ colors. We needed a non-civ-specific version for LotM.

Exoticpollution May 22, 2007, 01:58 AM That's cool. I really like the lighting effect you did on the shield.
Plotinus May 22, 2007, 02:28 AM Nice to see those animations being used - very good work!
The Last Conformist May 22, 2007, 03:03 AM Good job, Dream-spirit! :goodjob:
Stormrage May 22, 2007, 04:33 AM Wooo.. those are cool! Thanks!
For future reference, the death of the spearman is kinda weird, like someone pulled a carpet from beneth him. Other than that, its all cool
Vuldacon May 22, 2007, 12:03 PM Olorin0222... Congratulations on your 1st Humanoid Units. Very Good Work. I especially like the Shield movement in the Spearman Victory and you also made both Death animations look good with how they fall and their feet actions. :goodjob:
DragonBird May 22, 2007, 12:28 PM These are da-bomb... but not literally. They're still awesome. Something that might be different in gameplay, but I think the unit itself looks a tad to dark.
mrtn May 22, 2007, 12:56 PM Good work mate!
Yoda Power May 22, 2007, 01:11 PM Very nice.
Gondor just became a little bit funnier to play. :D
WildWeazel May 22, 2007, 04:28 PM Olorin, you're the man. er... Maia.
Great work!
odintheking May 22, 2007, 05:16 PM I love you, man. Great units, especially for your first humanoid units.
Tank_Guy#3 May 22, 2007, 07:58 PM Very cool. I like the Dunedain.
Centaur May 22, 2007, 08:18 PM Cool!
(not to sound gimmie-like, but could you make an archer to go with these?)
embryodead May 22, 2007, 08:47 PM Very nice :goodjob:
Orthanc May 22, 2007, 08:48 PM "You're in the service of the Steward! You'll have to do what you're told, Peregrin Took, Guard of the Citadel..."
:D
Pretty good work, Stormy's right about the spearmen death, the swordsman death is good, what it is with the spearman is that the lower legs slip forward, as Stormy said, as if a carpet was being pulled out from under them. But still very useable, and those attacks do look fun.
WildWeazel May 22, 2007, 09:54 PM I certainly wouldn't mind a matching archer ;)
"You're in the service of the Steward! You'll have to do what you're told..."
I might have to use that one sometime! :whipped:
rifleman May 22, 2007, 11:22 PM Great first units Olorin.
Why not use Kinboat's Warder unit graphics for the Dunedain's pcx's? The legs may not be civcolor, but at least the cloak's not green. It seems to be a better trade off.

...but I think the unit itself looks a tad to dark.
I second that. The armor looks really good, but I always think of Gondor soldiers as 'gleaming'
I certainly wouldn't mind a matching archer ;)...
Definately. What ever you do next, I look forward to it.
Olorin0222 May 23, 2007, 12:37 AM Rifleman - Good call on the Civilopedia image. I have updated the download per your suggestion.
Cool!
(not to sound gimmie-like, but could you make an archer to go with these?)
I certainly wouldn't mind a matching archer ;)
It would be nice...now if someone would post a basic archer animation in the Poser Animation Library in my sig (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, R8XFT, Plotinus)
Plotinus May 23, 2007, 02:24 AM I have to say I like the spearman death - it's better to have his feet move up and forwards like that rather than remain rooted to the spot. The swordsman death is mine, of course!
Bjornlo May 23, 2007, 06:10 AM Excellent work for your first human units. No need to fix anything (have I said that before, I don't recall :p )
rifleman May 23, 2007, 09:59 AM Glad to help
PCHighway May 27, 2007, 04:33 AM Most excellent indeed :)!
:goodjob:
Olorin0222 Jun 13, 2007, 12:23 AM Preview time!
Next unit in the works: a Knight of Dol Amroth.

Still a few things to do before I start animating, like find a bridle and reins prop, and play with the banner position a little, but it is just about ready.
A quick question: should the attack be overhand or underhand? Which would be more historical for a Late Dark Age knight to do?
Stormrage Jun 13, 2007, 04:44 AM Niiiiice! :D
Bjornlo Jun 13, 2007, 07:37 AM looks nice. A suggestion, perhaps keep previews in a seperate thread in the main forum?
Mithadan Jun 13, 2007, 01:15 PM Sweet!!!A quick question: should the attack be overhand or underhand? Which would be more historical for a Late Dark Age knight to do?Overhand attack would be more appropriate, if I'm not mistaken. The Normans at the battle of Hastings had barely started experimenting with couching the lance under their arms, and 1066 is pretty much past the end of the Dark Ages already.
Ares de Borg Jun 13, 2007, 04:34 PM Yep, spears were thrown overhand before melee.
Stormrage Jun 13, 2007, 04:38 PM Wait, how would an overhand attack look like? I`m not familiar with the translation in my language, and the literal direct translation gets me very confused about anatomy. Any units with an overhand attack out there? Is it like when you are about to throw a spear?
PS - I think the shield is great, but isn`t it a bit large for a rider?
Quinzy Jun 13, 2007, 04:42 PM Overhand is like... ED's Byzantine Sailor. So yeah, as if you're a javelineer.
Mithadan Jun 13, 2007, 11:16 PM If I recall correctly, both the Libyan Spearman and Ansar Warrior attack with overhand thrusts.
Olorin0222 Jun 13, 2007, 11:55 PM As does Utah's Rohirrim:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/RohirrimAnimated.gif
As for the shield being to large: I can shrink it real easy, that's why I posted the preview!
Quinzy Jun 14, 2007, 10:50 AM http://www.herstmonceuxsocieties.com/village/NormanKnight.jpg
Maybe a tad too long, but looking fantastic nonetheless!
Olorin0222 Jul 07, 2007, 01:24 PM Alright, I've added the Knight of Dol Amroth to the pack. My first Horse unit, it was a pain to work with, but I'm overall happy with it.
NavyDawg Jul 07, 2007, 01:31 PM Overall, I like your knight. Attack is well animated, fortify is great.:goodjob:
I think the man should fall faster in the death.
The unit doesn't have shadows. Make sure the ground prop is visible and you have shadows checked in the render options.
Quinzy Jul 07, 2007, 01:31 PM That death is... impossible... All else is good though.
Olorin0222 Jul 07, 2007, 01:40 PM The unit doesn't have shadows. Make sure the ground prop is visible and you have shadows checked in the render options.
I was trying to figure out why there were no shadows...I had the shadows option checked. I didn't check the ground...I just checked the ground...and it was invisible. Crap. Well, I'll re-render it.
Stormrage Jul 07, 2007, 01:58 PM I agree with Quinzy, the death anim is really.. impossible. Everything else is cool :)
Rm80 Jul 07, 2007, 02:06 PM Really nice unit, I really like how he throws up his spear before the attack.
too bad about the shadows since rendering is something of the most boring things ever.....
Olorin0222 Jul 07, 2007, 03:15 PM But hey, I can check up on threads like this while rendering...
NavyDawg Jul 07, 2007, 04:51 PM I was trying to figure out why there were no shadows...I had the shadows option checked. I didn't check the ground...I just checked the ground...and it was invisible. Crap. Well, I'll re-render it.
Don't worry too much about it. I've done the same thing several times...
Plotinus Jul 07, 2007, 05:01 PM Yes, sort out the shadows and that'll be a very nice unit. It looks great for a first mounted unit (I haven't dared try any mounted units yet as I think they look difficult). Apart from the death, which I'm sorry to have to say is pretty daft - you might as well have him hold up a little sign saying "Oh no!" before he falls!
WildWeazel Jul 07, 2007, 10:32 PM Like others said, the death is impossible. It looks like something from a cartoon. Other than that, it's an excellent unit. Thank you! :)
Blue Monkey Jul 09, 2007, 12:54 PM I see what everyone means about the death anim.; I give Olorin credit for trying something different, that was very difficult, with a mounted unit. I really like the concept. As the rider falls off if he tumbled more it would look more realistic I think, but the animating and rendering would be a lot more complex.
Olorin0222 Jul 09, 2007, 12:56 PM I've already changed the death sequence, which makes it more realistic. I'm rendering the animations as I type, so hopefully soon I'll get this up and downloadable.
odintheking Jul 09, 2007, 01:01 PM Awesome, cause this guy looks awesome!
Olorin0222 Jul 09, 2007, 03:16 PM Alright, the new version is up!
Ares de Borg Jul 09, 2007, 05:15 PM Great horseman! Please do more...
NavyDawg Jul 09, 2007, 11:49 PM Really nice remake. If I ever make a cavalry unit, I hope it turns out half as well.
Stormrage Jul 10, 2007, 12:53 AM The new death is great! Great job Olorin! Be sure to save those files now, put them on a DVD or something, you know how often HDD`s burn out over there in the US ;)
odintheking Jul 10, 2007, 10:24 AM Absolutely great, Olorin!
egroen Jul 10, 2007, 10:34 AM Great first mounted unit! Any chance you'd be willing to tackle the Nazgul rider? :)
Mithadan Jul 10, 2007, 02:29 PM As much as I loved your attempt to make an original horseman death (i.e. one where the horse doesn't simply die because the rider did), I think your second death animation works better as an animation.
I am very pumped about this Knight of Dol Amroth! Cheers!
Steph Jul 30, 2007, 02:29 AM I could see plenty of use for the knight
