Chapter 4: Retaliation

"Welcome to the 6 O'Clock News. Top stories for the day, the Indian President was assassinated early last night. His assailant was a German by the name of Hanz Herschel, who was found dead in a building across the street early this morning. Also found on the scene was the body of an unidentified Russian man. His part in the assassaniation is unkown at press time. More news as it devel...."

*click*

"....yeah, and then I heard this loud BOOM, you know? Like a gunshot or something. I was just getting home from the market when I heard it, then....."

*click*

"Russian officials have issued a statement backing the Indian people. Also, documents have been released, formerly top-secret, revealing the identity of the Russian man found in the building with the assassin..."

*click*

"It seems that word gets around fast in this age...." Bismark reclined back in his chair. He turned to his top ranking officials. "As you can see, the world now knows that we were behind this attack. Before too long, India will declare it an act of war, then my true plan can go into full swing." He motioned to a tall man with cold blue eyes. Himmler, ready my factories. We are beginning a massive..."buildup." Himler nodded silently, turned, and exited the room. "Now, as for the rest of you....we have some more..."plans" to draw up....."

SLAM! The Indian Vice-President banged his fist down on the large oak table, silencing the bickering presidential cabinet. "Do you have any idea what this means!? Bismark has KILLED the INDIAN HEAD OF STATE!!! We have no choice but to go to war!!"

A small man stood up, his forehead wrinkled with intense thought. "Sir, if we start a war, it could spell the end of the world as we know it...we both know that recent research into the "atom" has paved the way for weapons of mass destruction. Do we really want to wage a "nuclear war" that could cost millions of innocent lives?" The man sat back down, his point made.

The VP stood silent for a moment. Then he looked to a man standing in the corner, all but hidden by the shadows. "You. I want you to find out what kind of "nuclear" firepower those Germans and their allies have. Research has just begun; the whole idea may be completely new to them. If so, we can sign a pact with our allies to forego nuclear weapons. We want to teach the Germans a lesson, not eradicate them." He looked around the room at the President's cabinet. "I know you were all very close to him; he was my best friend, and it pains me that Bismark would ever do such a thing for his own personal gain....but we all must remember that Gandhi himself would frown on us if we just nuked the poor bastards. We must go about this as peacefully as possible, with minimum casualties. We WILL get them back. We will declare a limited, non-nuclear war, if possible. I pray that God grants them mercy.....You are all dismissed." The VP and cabinet members somberly rose out of their chairs, and walked out of the room without a word.

The rest of the nation, however, was not nearly as coolheaded as the heads of state. Riots were breaking out all across the land because of the actions of Germany, and the seemingly uncaring government. The people of India thirsted for blood. They yearned for the head of Bismark to be handed to them on a silver platter. It would take a rousing speech by the recently appointed President (formerly VP) Mohandas to settle the masses.

"Riots have broken out in several cities across India. Protestors have taken up arms in an effort to "persuade" Indian officials to destroy Germany. "I just can't believe those, those...STUBBORN, PEACELOVING, HIPPIE, TREEHUGGER...Hey, let me go!! I'm CALLING MY LAWYER!!" exclaimed one man, before being carted off by riot controllers in the capital city of Delhi. The new President, appointed this afternoon, is expected to give a speech tonight on all channels in our viewin..."

*Click*

"HaHAHAHA, those fools, and their "freedoms." No control over their own population. While they try to cater to "the people", and get everything back in order, I am already in full production...soon, they will feel the wrath of Bismark!!! OF GERMANY!!"

"We take you now, live to the Palace, where President Mohandas is about to start."

"Thank you. My fellow Indians, a great atrocity has been commited against the Indian people by the warmongering Germans. They will be dealt with severly. However, they will be dealt with by your ARMY, not by YOUR HANDS. Please, go about your daily business; we are not expecting you to forget this travesty, but to use your anger in healthy ways. Rioting only causes more problems. We understand you are all angry, as are we. That is why I will use this time to tell the people of India that we have declared war on the nation of Germany. Bismark, if you are watching this, I would like to say, on the behalf of the nation of India, nay the world, that your crime will not go unpunished. Prepare to feel the wrath of the World Alliance!! India, Russia, the USA, and Great Britain, have all declared war on you. You WILL be punished. I pray that God has mercy on you, that He hold back our fury. That is all." The president turned and left, amid a roar of applause.

*click*

"Riots have ended in all of the cities of India with the recent news of the declaration of war on Germany. Young Indians who were once breaking shop windows have signed up for the Indian Armed Forces, proud to defend their nation against the tyranny of Fascist Germany."

*click*

"HAHAHA, rousing speech, my friend. But it is too late. We will see who gets punished....hahahaha!" Bismark motioned to Himmler.

"How goes the nuclear weapon manufacturing?"

This story brings up another feature the game needs: peace weariness. If a country is at peace and another country does something evil to it (piracy, moving units into its territory repeatedly, using spec ops against it, etc) the people should become irritable about not going to war. The rioters complaints could say something like, "The rabid aztecs keep coming into our land to steal chickens and harass our women. You must do something to protect the chickens."

Any comments on this idea?

sorry guys, next chapter won't be out till either tomorrow or saturday.
I've been getting ready for graduation/finals..... :D

I've also been thinking of compiling the seperate threads of my story into one text file or something like that....what do you guys think? If I do that, it won't be until there are a couple more chapters, or my threads start disappearing from the front of the board. It would make it easier for new people to keep track of (me too!). Comments?

Stay tuned! Big things in store!

Yeah I think putting all the chapters of the same story on one thread is better. More people will read it too if its kept current; otherwise, your earlier chapters will fade into the world of dust and despair.

:p waiting for the next chapter like a dog begging at the dinner table

The German Stormtrooper, the elite infantry unit of said Fascist Empire, peered over the top of the trenches. The once lush countryside of India had been ravaged by war. Now entering its third week, it didn't look like it would end soon. The stormtrooper tried to focus his eyes in the dark, trying to make out any enemy movements. He, as well as the rest of the platoon, had been pinned down by machinegun fire for several hours now. Bismark said this would be a cakewalk, he grumbled to himself. The Germans had been surprised by the ferocity with which the Indians defended their homeland. Though the Germans had captured many cities, it was not without heavy losses.

Though the threat of nuclear war hung in the air, neither side had actually resorted to launching. The Alliance, consisting of India, Russia, the USA,and Great Britain, thought they had the only nuclear arsenals, and as such, didn't feel the need to obliterate the planet. However, the Iron Fist (Germany, Egypt, France, and China), with their secret arsenal, weren't nearly as.....eco-conscious....

Machine gun fire echoed through the night. Men, German and Indian alike, fell to the ground, wounded or dead. The stalemate had ended abruptly when a sniper had taken out the machinegun nest, enabling the German infantry, covered by artillery pieces, to mount a counter attack. Frantic Indians tried to hold them off, but the wave of Germans was near endless. The Germans were held at bay again once more, again by a machine gun nest, but this was ended abruptly by a well placed artillery shell. When the smoked finally cleared, melted by the rising sun, 18,000 Indians lay dead or wounded, as well as 23,000 Germans. This battle, despite the loss of life, was a great victory for the Germans. It expanded their supply lines deep into Indian territory, and, more importanly, gave them control over a very important Indian commodity: Uranium.

News of the great losses from the Battle of New Delhi, as it was later called, reached a distressed Indian President early that morning. Not only had a good portion of the Indian army been killed, but it had lowered morale across the land, as well as cut off their only supply of Uranium. He was stubborn however, and refused to sign a peace treaty, which would basically hand over his empire to Bismark. He did, however, with much reluctance, ask for increased help from the rest of the Alliance. Using their combined forces, he would mount a massive counter-attack, pushing the Germans back into their own territory. Their first target: the liberation of New Delhi.

In the Russian city of Kiev, some children played outside in the bright sun. Their mothers, having finished their cleaning, sat outside sipping lemonade, chatting about the recent fashions and such. One waved to a passing neighbor, walking his dog. The other mother, however, wasn't looking at the neighbor. She was looking at the children, who were pointing at the sky. "Hey, what you think that is Boris? Is it one of those new jumbo jet thingies?, asked one of the children, Nikolas.

"Nah, too small, I think...those things are s'posed to be really big, like three buses or somethin', this one's a lot smaller than that..." replied Boris, shielding his eyes from the afternoon sun. The object was moving fast, approaching them from the south. Suddenly it started to dip down, almost as if it were coming straight for them.

"Wow, Boris that's really weird...you see it start to dip down? I think it might crash into your house!" said a frantic Nikolas.

"Hey, maybe its Superman! Maybe he's comin' to kill those Germans!" Boris pointed, waving to his mother, "Hey mom! It's supe..."

He didn't get to finish his sentence. The object, an Egyptian made nuclear missile, had crashed into the ground several blocks from where they were standing, detonating on impact. The ensuing blast incinerated Nikolas, Boris, their mothers, their lemonade, and their houses. Everything within several miles met a similar fate. Further away from ground zero, buildings and people were shredded by an invisible wall of energy. A brilliant flash of light, rivaling the sun itself, could be seen as far away as Moscow. 540,000 people, roughly half the population, had been killed, with more to come due to radioactive fallout.

Back in Germany, Bismark smiled to himself. All was going according to plan...

Just adding the old story

The great German fascism, headed by Bismark, was finally catching up technologically with its larger rivals, including India and Russia. Sharing a common border, Bismark knew it was important to stay as far ahead in the tech race as possible, even if they weren't actually at war....yet........

Outside the Indian capital city of Delhi, trouble was brewing. Unbeknownst to Gandhi, Agent Herschel had just stepped off of the train from Chandrapur, a small Indian town that, by pure coincidence, shared a border with Germany. Agent Herschel, or simply "H" as he was known by the higher-ups, was a master spy.He loved his work, loved his country, and, most importantly, hated the Indians with an all-consuming passion. This emotional drive was what convinced Bismark to put him, out of all the other agents, on this "assignment". "H" was warned, however, before being put on the train to Chandrapur, to not let hate cloud his better judgement. Bismark did not take failure lightly.

"H" stomped on the smoking remains of a cigarette. This was a strange quirk of his; he left a single cigarette butt at each train station he visited while on assignment. When asked about it, he would just shrug and mumble, "I like to leave my mark on the world....". The train station was bustling with activity, with all kinds of people going to and fro. The mysterious German was hardly noticed, except for by one pair of observant eyes.

He was also a spy. A proud, large man, Nikolai was actually on loan from Russia, India's ally. He was the best the Russians had, and for that reason, he was not cheap: 1 ton of pure Silver and 2 tons of Ivory, already being used by the Tzar for various "amenities". Nikolai noticed the stranger as soon as he stepped off the train. German, he thought, about 6'2", 220 lbs.Why would a German be here? Only a spy would be this far from home. Not wanting to draw attention to himself, he slowly put his newspaper down, and got up and walked non-chalantly toward the magazine rack, where he could get a better look at his new "friend."

"H" was not stupid. He knew that the large Russian man had noticed the fact that he appeared out of place, and was also quite aware that the man had every intention of tailing him. Well, now, we can't have any of that now can we? He smiled to himself as he walked to the restroom, Let's just see how good this guy is.....

Nikolai could smell a trap from several miles away. His buddies joked often that he could smell a rat trap in the middle of the Black Forest during a forest fire. He strode past the restroom, like he never had any intention of going there in the first place. He instead went to the phone, figuring that the German would wait there for a while, then give up and come out again when he thought the coast was clear.

He couldn't have been more wrong.

Just adding the old story

"H" had waited a good 30 secs for the Russian. He knows its a trap...well good, makes it more interesting...... He knew the man was waiting for him outside, hoping that he'd think it was safe to venture out. There was no way he would make that mistake. He looked around the empty bathroom stall for a means of escape. The restroom was immaculate, showing off the obvious riches of the Indians. The floor, walls, even the toilets were made from the finest ivory, while the faucets were molded from pure gold. He was suprised no one had tried to steal them. What really caught his eye though was the small window just a couple of feet above him on the opposite wall.

Damn, what is he doing in there? Nikolai was getting impatient. How long was this German going to wait for him? Then it dawned on him....he jumped up like he had suddnely been stung by a bee and threw the door open. His new "friend" was gone. The window was open; the cold breeze chilled Nikolai to the marrow.

"H" had stopped to catch his breath. After jumping from the window, he had sprinted from the train station for several hundred feet. He knew that his objective was not too far off, but neither was the Russian.

Sh*t, Sh*t, how could I make such a stupid mistake!? , Nikolai screamed silently to himself. He too was making a mad dash away from the train station, but in this case, for the sake of Indian security. Spies are never "just visiting", he thought, this guy is up to something big . He pulled out the small caliber pistol he carried with him. He had a feeling he would have to stop this guy from causing a earth-shattering tragedy.

Good, it's here. "H" had arrived at his objective, a tall, abandoned office building across from the palace. The leather case he pulled from the secret compartment in the one large room on the top floor was just what he was looking for. He popped open the clasps, and peered inside. Ah, my old friend, how I have missed you. The sniper rifle caught the late evening sunlight, seeming to reply back to his cooing. He was ready, all he had to do was wait.

NO. Not this. The worst possible thing that Bismark could do. What kind of madman was he?! Nikolai knew now what this German was up to. As soon as he saw the blinding flash of sunlight on metal, he knew. He had to stop him. But how long did he have before the inevitable?

CHAPTER 3 (Part 1)

Gandhi was a very popular leader. He was the only president to have ever been elected to three consecutive terms in all of India's democratic history. He hosted his weekly charity benefits at the palace, and was close personal friends with (most) every leader in the world. He stepped onto the second floor balcony of his palace. Ah! How he did love the cool Indian nights; perfect for his meditation.

I wish I was back in Germany, "H" silently mumbled to himself. Though it was cool outside, the office building was muggy, and several different species of insect had decided to call it home. He squashed a beetle with his heavy leather boots, his third one in thirty seconds. I hate this place..... Suddenly, a smile crept across his face, a wide beaming smile that seemed to counteract all of the thoughts he had just had. He slid the chamber of the sniper rifle open and placed a single bullet in, then slid the bolt back into place. Ignoring the bugs, he rested the gun on the window sill. It was time.

Nikolai wished he had taken the Endurance Training Classes. Here he was, chasing after a madman, and he had to stop halfway up a staircase to catch his breath. God, I hope I'm in time.... Finally, what seemed after a neverending staircase, he pushed open the heavy wooden door that would gain him entrance to the top floor.

Gandhi loved his meditation times. He could become in one with God, with nature. He was at peace. Ohhhm....Ohhmmmm

Ha, ha, crazy Indians; could he make it any simpler? "H" put his finger on the trigger. He slowly started to apply pressure. A sudden creaking board caused him to lose his concentration and look up.

"Freeze you bast*rd." The Russian boomed, with a heavy accent. "You put that gun down or the prostitues down below will be bathing in your brains." The pistol wasn't a very large one, but from such a close proximity, the bullet could easily do as the Russian predicted.

"Ha, Ha....It is my Russian friend. " The German turned around goodnaturedly, throwing off Nikolai's rough demeanor. "I see we are in a stalemate yet again, no?" He motioned with his eyes to the window, where Gandhi was still meditating. "Do you think you can kill me before I pull the trigger?" Nikolai was starting to like this calm, cool madman less and less.

Ohmmm....Ohmmmmm

Maybe I can stall him long enough so that Gandhi can finish up...
"Why are you here? Did Bismark send you? " Nikolai questioned "H".
"Ha, Ha. You are trying to stall me? It will not work, my friend. We finish this now." At this, "H" rolled to the side behind some crates, seemingly at an inhuman speed. In one fluid motion he had dropped the rifle and was now holding a standard issue German Special Forces Pistol.

DAM*IT!!! Nikolai silently swore to himself. He too dived for cover. This would be the end for one of them....

Ohmmm....Ohmmmm

"H" thanked the director of the special forces division under his breath for reminding him to bring a silencer for his gun. "You don't want to alert Gandhi to your presence just because you think there are too many rats in Delhi, Ha Ha." He crawled behind another set of crates, trying to get behind the Russian.

Nikolai knew the German would try to catch him off guard. He decided that the best move would be to do the same. He carefully peered around the corner of the boxes, then sprinted to the other end of the room.

Thwit! Thwit! Several bullets tore the floor boards just mere inches behind Nikolai's feet as he made his way across the room. He's a good shot....that was way to close.

While Nikolai caught his breath, "H" was slinking through the shadows of the room, stepping over bugs, trash, and floorboards that looked like they would creak at the slightest change in air pressure. He tried to limit his breathing, remembering his training. "Anything that you think might give away your position probably will."

Great he isn't there anymore, but where? He carefully peered over the top of the crates. Thwit! Thwit! Splinters jumped into his eyes from the two shots. "AAGGGGH!" He screamed in pain, tearing at his eyes. This isnt good!

"H" laughed silently to himself. Ha, Ha, big stupid Russian. He continued to get closer to Nikolai.

Ohmmmm.....Ohmmmmm....

Nikolai finally picked the scraps of wood from his eyes, and wiped the small dropletts of blood onto his shirt. He's close, I can feel him.

Ohmmmm......Ohmmmmm....

"H" slid another clip into his gun. CLICK! "I'm coming for you my friend," he whispered to the shadows.

Nikolai, for the first time in his life, was getting anxious. This man was not to be trifled with; he was a trained killer. If he didnt stop him....the world would suffer the consequences......

Ohmmm....Ohmmmmm......

Alec006
Jul 07, 2002, 11:22 AM
Nikolai decided he was through hiding. If he was going to stop this guy, he would definitely need to keep moving. However, he would first need to find out the relative location of the German; he didn't want a bullet to catch him between the eyes just because he didn't know he was running right at him.

"H" continued his silent hunt for Nikolai. It was already dark outside, but moonlight flooded the many windows of the large room. *CREEEAK* Haha, not very careful is he, he thought, smiling to himself. He decided that now was the time to finish this. He dove out sideways, firing several shots.

Nikolai knew the German would hear that. He was, however, still caught completely by surpise by "H"'s John Woo style acrobatics. "H" had jumped from behind one set of crates to another, firing several shots down the long dark aisle. Nikolai barely had time to dive out of the way; several bullets tore his shirt sleeves in mid-air. Luckily, he wasn't hurt, and he now knew where the bastard was. He readied his gun.

"H" was starting to get cocky. He had already exposed the Russian's hiding spot twice, and hit him both times. Haha, too easy. He reloaded again. He looked up at the ceiling, admiring the modern architecture. That's when he noticed the Russian standing on the crates above him, a big, maniacal smile on his face, holding a steel pipe. The next thing he knew, Nikolai had clocked him over the head. Everything went black......

Ohmmm......ohmmmm....

Nikolai kicked the German's body. He was out cold. He tossed the pipe aside. It's over, he sighed heavily. He turned his attention to the window, where the sniper rifle lay. He walked over and peered outside. Gandhi was still there, sitting on the balcony, humming to himself. He never understood Gandhi's obssession with meditation. He would much rather be out on some assignment. He turned back around to the German. Sh*t.... "H" was gone.

"H" felt the back of his head. He was surprised the blow didn't kill him; the Russian was incredibly strong. His hair was matted with blood, but he knew it wasn't serious. He would go to the physician when he got back to Germany. But first....

Nikolai kicked himself. DAM*IT!!! I knew I shouldn't have turned my back on him! He readied his gun again. Gandhi, hurry up!, his brain screamed. He walked to where the German had lain a few seconds before, hoping to find a blood trail or something. A few medium sized drops led down an aisle of crates, and then around the corner. He slowly followed it, listening intently for the slightest movement.

"H" was waiting silently for the Russian. There would be no more games. This would end now. He readied his gun. He was on his last clip.
He dove to the side again, firing off several shots.

Nikolai was ready for this, he dove forward firing, flying just under the first several bullets, and skidded along the wooden floor, then he rolled behind some crates. Splinters were stuck in his chest, but he ignored them. He was operating on pure adrenaline now. He was also down to his last clip.

"H" didn't know the Russian could move so fast. One of the bullets had caught him in the shoulder, and another in the leg. He was also starting to feel a little dizzy. He knew he was still losing blood from his head, but now he had two more wounds. He winced with pain. Dam*it
One bullet left. He knew he couldn't use the same trick again.....

Ohmmm.....ohmmmm

Nikolai counted the shots he had fired, trying to figure how many bullets he had left. [I] Two. That's it. It all comes down to this. "Hey, "friend," how about we settle this like gentlemen? I'll throw away all of my bullets except one, then we both step out in the aisle and on the count of three, we fire. What do you say?"
"H" stuck his hand out, one finger exposed, then pulled it back. Uncultured swine, Nikolai grimaced. Fine, if that's how he wants it... He decided to make a move towards "H". He sidestepped out behind the crates, hoping the German would hear him. He did.

"H" also sidestepped form behind the crates, but then he ran forward towards Nikolai. The burst of speed surpised Nikolai, and he barely got his last two shots off before he was tackled to the ground by the German who was brandishing a large Special Forces knife.

Ohmm....ohmmmm

"H" pushed with all his might, trying to find flesh for his hungry knife. Nikolai pushed back, but he had been caught off guard by the German's suicidal run. "H" was bleeding profusely, but it seemed he was just getting stronger, with each passing second. Nikolai decided to even the odds. He kicked up his leg, sending "H" flying over top of him, the knife clattering away behind some boxes. Nikolai reached into his boot. He pulled out his own knife. He advanced toward "H".

Ohmmm....Ohmmm.

"H" was lying facedown, his hands to his side. He slowly got up, just as Nikolai came up behind him, knocking him back to the ground. "Ha Ha, you Germans are relentless. Here I am, the victor, yet you still try to get up. I commend you, you are very brave, my friend. Or foolish," he said, lifting the knife above his head. "H" made his move. In one quick motion, he rolled over, arm extended. He was holding the German Special Forces Pistol. Thwit! One bullet. Nikolai was stunned; he didn't even know he was dead. A thin trickle of blood flowed from between his eyes, down his face, and dripped off his chin. He dropped to his knees, his eyes rolled back into his head. He fell face down with a thud beside the German.

Ohmmm....Ohmmm

"H" was in severe pain. He had several wounds, and his head hurt. Plus, he felt like he was about to black out. He had one more thing to do. Then he could sleep.....

Ohmmm.....Ohmmm

"H" limped to the window and picked up the sniper rifle. It semed to weigh much more than he remembered. He rested it on the window sill.

Ohmmm.....Ohmmm

He brought Gandhi in his sights. He aimed for just above Gandhi's left eye. From his angle, the bullet would pass straight through the middle of the Indian leader's head. He put his finger on the trigger.

Ohmmm.....Ohmmm

He slowly applied pressure.

Ohmmm.....Ohmmm

The quiet night was shattered by the crack of a high powered rifle. "H" liked for his victims to know they were about to die, even if this awareness was just for a split second, so he never used a silencer on his sniper rifle.

*GRAPHIC scene below*

The German's aim was true, even in his weakened state. Gandhi's head exploded, one half cleaved clean off. Blood splattered against the wall and on Gandhi's silk pillows. His body toppled to the side.

*GRAPHIC scene above*

"H" laid the gun beside him. It was finally over. His breath came in short, labored bursts. He laid his head down on the cool floor. The bugs didn't seem to bother him anymore. He was very tired for some reason. Bismark would be proud of him, he thought. He closed his eyes for the last time, a smile across his face.

Chapter 6: The Dust Settles

The dust settled. Over the past few years (God, had it been that long?), war ravaged the earth. Civilizations had crumbled. Billions had been killed. The once mighty nations of the earth were reduced to nothing more than ash. And for what? A few miles of land, which were now, ironically, scorched by the same men who fought for them.

Berlin had been ransacked after the great Russo-Indian counter offensive. Bismark was brought to a swift justice, and a puppet leader put in his place to rule the few remaining German towns. Though they won the war, the nations of India, Russia and Great Britain did so with an extremely high cost: it would take many years to rebuild their great empires, and even longer to clean up the toxic sludge left over from the many nuclear weapons that were thrown about recklessly by each side.

Regarding the other nations involved in the conflict, only the small island nation of France remained virtually unscathed. The USA was no more, trampled under the treads of the Egyptian tanks. The infinite swarms of elite Chinese infantry eventually fell, as well as her many towns, to a collasal combined invasion by Great Britain and India. The Alliance, as a whole, lost about 75% of its total area, due to nuclear weapons or capture by the Iron Fist. The Iron Fist lost roughly 90%. A total of seven billion people lost their lives, over 60% of the population of the world.

What else can be said? As I peer out over the once lush countryside, I see only death. Despair. Grief. Hate. It will take long to rebuild, but even longer to forget.
