Of course, I'm probably the only one on this entire forum who really cares, except maybe AlCosta, but thought I'd thread this one anyway.

Of course, I'm pretty certain that as usual Mexico or the US will win it yet again.

I expect Canada to at least make the quarters, and pretty hopeful for the semis. After our victory over Costa Rica, who knows, maybe we'll even get to the finals!

I'll be watching the game tomorrow. I'm fairly certain that Canada can handle Guadeloupe tomorrow night.

 How'd you know? United States, according to my dad (I was out of town without a TV), played extremely sluggishly against Guatemala, we can't continue to play like that and expect to win. I caught some of the Honduras-Panama game, and my question is what has happened to Honduras these last few years, they used to be a great team, now they looked flat tonight.

It's going to come down to a game between the US and Mexico, and honestly, I would give the edge to Mexico at the moment, they just came off a very impressive friendly win versus Iran. Maybe I'm just being superstitious though, but it would feel great to beat Mexico again.

I am interested. I want to see a beatdown of Mexico.

I want to see if they weep in the streets again after we beat them :p

Hope so, mind you they've been surprising everyone and anyone all along the way.

 How'd you know?

Didn't you know? I'm extremely clever. ;)

The only confederation cup that is more worthless is the Oceania Cup of Nations. Which was, before we went to Asia, was basically a tournament that Australia would always win, very much like the Cricket right now.

We took a kicking from Guadeloupe that's for sure. Both of their goals were real class, we'll have to at least tie Haiti to go through.

Shouldn't be too hard, of course, you did just lose to Guadeloupe. :p

So we managed to beat Haiti and we finish top in Group A... awesome! Canada was expected to make the quarters, so anything from hereon is a bonus, looks likely we'll face Guatemala.

USA thrashes El Salvador 4-0. They seem unstoppable.

This guarantees that Guadaloupe will go through as well.

They're 1 and 1, but that loss to Honduras hurt a lot. Bravo, I think, is out with a red card too, so that will hurt them even more.

New FIFA rankings are out, Canada has taken a massive leap up to 56th (6th in CONCACAF). Guatemala sits at 81st/10th respectively. By those figures we should now expect beat them, but of course anything can happen.

This of course now means that the suggestion of Canada making it to the World Cup will longer be greeted by howling laughter, but rather a simple "erm... maybe".

Doesn't matter, even if we do we'll just have to face the US (now ranked 16th/1st) and probably get knocked out by them.

I remember in 2000 when we won the Gold Cup. Didn't we move on (past Korea, I think?) thanks to a coin toss?

sysyphus
Jun 16, 2007, 02:23 PM
Yep, at the end of group play were tied with Korea on everything, head to head, goal difference. We needed a golden goal against Mexico to advance to the semis as well.

Today we thrashed Guatemala 3-0. BRING ON THE YANKS!!!!!!

Assuming of course they beat Panama, but it's a pretty fair assumption the way they've been playing.

edit: the US has won... now the fun for them is over as they face the WRATH OF CANADA :mwaha:

we're in trouble :twitch:

Mexico really struggled against Costa Rica. I predict a lose their next game. Costa Rica only had 8 men and still Mexico couldn't stretch the lead to two. This definitely shows signs of weakness on their part. See ya Mexico!!!

And that's with the horrible refereeing in this game. 2 of our players were sent-off unfairly, while they kicked us and never even got a yellow card. I suspect this game was fixed, just like the US-Panama game, where the Panamanians were not awarded at least 2 penalties.

The USA game was just poorly refereed, but the Mexico game seemed suspicious.

I am rooting for the US, but I think the game should have gone to overtime. The goal at the very end was in fact not offsides...The US still have not impressed me. We need someone to finish for us, a good striker that will not choke at key moment in the game. Well done Canada, you DID impress me...

sysyphus
Jun 22, 2007, 06:43 AM
Thanks,

I didn't see the game, heard we played well.

If a US supporter says it was offside then I'm guessing it must have been (and kudos to you for your honesty).

Still, there's good out of this tournament for us, a solid run into the semis shows that we are a true contender in the World Cup qualifying.

Here's hoping that when (if?) soccer finally takes hold in this country,

I think it's safe to say that it already has.

we don't start blaming the refs everytime we lose...

I don't want to see it come to that, but from every source I have heard, whether the bias is toward Canada, toward the US or neutral, the consensus is that the goal should have counted. I can't comment myself as I didn't see the game.

What's done is done and I accept that and am overall happy with Canada's result in this tournament.

Besides, why should Canadian fans be any different from all the other fans around the world? ;)

polyphemus
Jun 22, 2007, 10:56 AM
I actually am amazed that you're not complaining about the call, usually fans are quick to blame the referees. One thing my dad always told me, "The refs don't win or lose the game for you, you decide that."

sysyphus
Jun 22, 2007, 11:50 AM
Well, largely because, like pboily said, I don't want to get too deep into scapegoating refs for losses, even though the goal seems legitimate.

I've now seen the replay, and if I understand the rules correctly, Hutchison was indeed onside.

But what's done is done, and there's no guarantee if the goal did count that we'd be through anyway. Canada had a good tournament and we're looking promising for the next World Cup qualifiers, it's still a net positive in the tournament for us.

Of course I want to go to the finals and I'm sure we deserved that goal, but it's not worth the slippery slope to bad sportsmanship to moan about it.

EDT= Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

It means that the time on the East Coast of America when they have daylight savings one. Otherwise it would EST (Eastern Standard Time).

Hopefully the Match will be a good one, considering that the two biggest nations in the region made into the final.

not even talking about the mega powerful illegal tackle in which the canadian player made a 360 front flip in the air...and only a yellow card of course!

Indeed, that was the other major crime committed by the ref.

The pentaly kick the resulted in the second American goal was a fair call though.

Donovan saved the team with that penalty kick (which some credit goes to Ching for drawing the foul). If he missed that, I think the game would have been over or, with luck, gone to overtime. He can handle the pressure unlike Beasley.

Sure, that's why Donovan handled the pressure of playing in Europe so well, unlike Beasley. :p

It doesn't matter where they play, if you watched the past few games, Beasley was not on top of his game. Besides Donovan is going to play along side with Beckham on the Galaxies.

In that case you made a generalist statement made on current form. Beasley made a name for himself in a highly competitive environment such as the Champions League, while Donovan couldn't handle the european game demands. One of the reasons Beckham is going to LA is precisely because of less pressure surely.

You can say that, but if you think Beasley did great in the last few games, you obviously didn't watch them. He was served perfect chances, never finished them.

I thought Beasley was more of a wide player rather than a striker.

He has been at Man City all season and I believe they broke the record for least goals scored in a season. He did score 4 though.

In the finals he was graced 2 great chances, the last one was a wide open net to tap it in. Any forward needs to know how to finish.
