View Full Version : Woodsman 3
Infantry#14 Jun 17, 2007, 04:55 PM what is this promotion?
I think it will be similar to Guerilla 3 at warlord, 25% attack vs forest, jungles and 30% withdrawl chance. But is this promotion worth the exp? Probably not, because this is too situational and forest and jungles will disappear eventually

What if your fighting against someone, and both of you are on another continent fighting for the one in the middle which has no civ on it?

Four corner one? That map use to be fun for 4v4 :D each team starts with one corner, and you would just fight over control of the middle of the map hehe..
Woodsman III i hope will be good for estabilishing beachheads or something similar i guess
Scaramanga Jun 17, 2007, 06:20 PM I am thinking it will be similar to Guerilla III in that it will cancel out the defensive bonus the defending unit in the particular terrain gets. This is since Guerilla III gives a 25% attack bonus on a terrain that gives a 25% defensive bonus (hills). So then Woodsman III will have a 50% attack bonus on jungle/forests since those terrains give a defensive bonus of 50%.
bonafide11 Jun 17, 2007, 06:23 PM It's probably not worth it unless you're playing as Monty, and even then it's too situational, the problem is forests/jungles get chopped, hills last forever
civzombie Jun 17, 2007, 06:43 PM OP - you appear to be analyze whether woodsman III is worth the opporunity cost of three promotions. However, to the extent your army already has some woodsmen II troops, for those troops the opportunity cost is only ONE more promotion.
I would definitely trade a single promotion for a 30% withdrawal rate. Thus, all my woodsman II troops will use their next promotion to reach woodsman III (if the promotion does what you speculate, which seems probable).
marioflag Jun 17, 2007, 07:08 PM It should be more powerful than Guerrilla 3.
Guerrilla as promotion is a lot more useful and less situational than Woodsman line promotion.I think all Woodsman promotion should be boosted if they should be even compared to Guerrilla promotions
MagisterCultuum Jun 17, 2007, 11:40 PM It will be very useful in FfH, whenever fighting in Elven/Fellowship of the Leaves lands.
Ball Lightning Jun 17, 2007, 11:45 PM It'll probably be 30% defence or something.
witten Jun 18, 2007, 02:56 AM I almost always promote my first several units(i.e. scouts or warrior) up to Woodmans II, because then they can move through forest/jungle twice as fast. Given that they tend to survive quite for long(due to they got xp's earlier than the rest), I would consider Woodman III, just one on top of what they already got. Not quite sure of Guerilla III though.

FfH is very very different to the normal game. The usefulness of a promotion in it (if it is indeed in FfH, which is doubtful) is irelevant to the normal game
Commander Bello Jun 18, 2007, 05:05 AM I am a big fan of Woodsman3 giving an attack bonus for forests and jungles, as then there would be a counter for any specialized promotion.
We have the raider to counter the garrison, we have the guerilla3 to counter guerilla1-2 and so on.
Virulent Jun 18, 2007, 08:24 AM Honestly I found both the Woodsman and Guerrilla lines of promotions to be too situational to be of any use.
Cu Chulainn Jun 18, 2007, 12:01 PM IMO these bonuses should be for attacking FROM the specified terrain. This would give Monty and the Celts potential for extremely effective army specializations.
The Celtic UB should provide Guerrilla 1 to ALL units, not just those that can normally get it, and should give G2 to their UU. UB's should by synergistic with the civ's other specialties, not redundant.
Krikkitone Jun 18, 2007, 12:07 PM well I'm hoping they changed around the W+G lines
I: +30% Def, +10% Attack
II: +10% Def, +10% Attack, 2x movement
III: +10% Def, +30% Attack
That would make them worthwhile for both Attack+Defense
kniteowl Jun 19, 2007, 07:54 AM I'd prefer to combine W & G III, and call it Adaptation Promotion but it requires either W II or G II
smith-b-d Jun 19, 2007, 09:08 AM Hopefully Woodsman 3 will give a attack bonus versus woods & jungle, this would make jaguars awesome during marathon games.
Pariah Nov 02, 2007, 09:27 AM I have yet to see Woodsman III available for any unit - even explorers, which can start out with Woodsman II & Guerilla II, don't seem to have the 3rd wood promotion offered after winning combat. Is this because I usually pit them against barbarians? Or does Woodsman II have some other prerequisite?

Hurrah thread resurrection. Anyways, Woodsman III gives +50% bonus to attacking enemies in jungles and forests, as well as some medic-like healing bonus. Since the main part of the bonus is offensive, then scouts and explorers that can only defend are not eligible for it. Warriors are perfectly capable of getting Woodsman III though.

Woodsman III also gives two free First Strikes. It's amusing to see this in action with Melee units, as it looks like the Woodsman III units kills the first one or two with their minds.

Ah yes, that too. Right now I'm playing a game with the Japanese, and I'm owning everyone with my Samurai. It's awesome to see the Samurai just take a Jedi-like stance as if the swords are lightsabers, focus on one of the enemies, and then the enemy dies without a swing.
princecharles Nov 02, 2007, 05:32 PM Personally, there's nothing quite like sending thousands of Woodsman III Jaguars into heavily forested enemy territory...
Rex rgis of Ter Nov 02, 2007, 11:11 PM get a woodsman 3 scout on ARboria. It's incredible
Pariah Nov 03, 2007, 12:25 PM get a woodsman 3 scout on ARboria. It's incredible
Didn't Defiant 47 just establish that this promotion isn't available to scouts? I can see what you mean about its application on an Arboria map, though...
Love the Greek signature BTW. :)
Polycrates Nov 03, 2007, 03:38 PM Woodsman III impis are also the absolute bomb. The other aspects of the promo (and its predecessors) are good for impis, but the healing on such a fast unit is just great. Get them to 17xp (not that hard with impis) and you can give them Medic I as well, and add a spare GG to the picture for Medic III and you get hands-down the best healer in the game.
King Flevance Nov 03, 2007, 03:49 PM I thinkWoodsman 3 is a great idea. I don't chop forests though. I tend to chop all the forest down in the 8 squares directly around a city. But then I tend to ease up on the outside leaving anywhere between 1-4 forests left.I am also a big fan of the forest preserve they added in.
Krikkitone Nov 03, 2007, 05:33 PM Actually the best are Jags-> 10 exp = a super healer
mboettcher Nov 03, 2007, 06:14 PM woodsman III is the MOST powerful promotion in many ways. Unfortunately you have to buy woodsman I and II to get it. For god sakes it gives +2 FS, +15% healing, and forest attack (which is specialized but nice to have). the 2 fs and the healing mean that a) you don;t need a medic you already got a stronger one b) this is the best promotion for a warlord, who now can heal up to 40% a turn and gets those 2 fs
