In my current game, I stopped Ghandi from being wiped out by a Mehemed/Brennus alliance because he supports me and Rosey. You'd think he'd be grateful that I negotiated his salvation...

I just wrote an english final so I apologize if this thread sounds like my head melted...it feels like it has.

I agree. The current system is just ridiculous.

The AI has a hard time figuring out whether a war is good or bad. If you're about to win, you'd be pretty pissed about peace being negotiated. If you're about to lose, only then would you be grateful. The AI has a hard time with this distinction -- it doesn't even really know when to negotiate peace for itself.

I wonder how hard this is to do? It's probably harder than we think.

You're absolutely right about this. Though the cynic in me points out that humans also have a hard time with the distinction. At least, that's the impression I have from reading diplomatic histories of nineteenth century Europe, to say nothing of current events ... :D

Well, even if it was as simple as "zomg they have more power than me" it would be better :p

If you could buy off a civ with gifts, diplo victory would be a piece of cake. Religion would be even more inconsequential. Any atrocity could be reversed by giving a share of the spoils of war. Basically, you'd have Civilization 3.

That the AI won't simply bend over backwards for whoever gives them the most stuff is a feature, not an omission. People keep saying they want a competitive AI, but I don't think they realize what that actually means.
