View Full Version : Choose your top 10 civs!
Dutch Canuck Jun 26, 2007, 06:48 PM Let's focus on what we like for a change! :)
Out of all 34 civs from Vanilla, Warlords and BTS, what are your Top 10 civs you like whether you have throughly played them or not? Do not account for leaders (i.e. ignore traits), try look at this at the level of the civilizations themselves (think of just UB, UU, flag, flavour, "feel", kewlness, personal taste, and eras/themes you prefer).
I would like to make this a multi-vote poll but I cannot exceed 25 options! Maybe a moderator can do something?
Anyways, here's my Top 10 civs (in alphbetical order):
The Arabs
The Babylonians
The Dutch
The Egyptians
The Indians
The Japanese
The Mayans
The Native Americans
The Russians
The Vikings
I will repeat this question (and perhaps change my mind again ) after I get my grubby hands on a copy of BTS... :D

Persians
Russians

calgacus Jun 26, 2007, 07:10 PM In terms of feel, never seen much of the new BTS civs. The previous civs, the Russians and Celts have a good fell ... love the Dun and the Cossacks. The Viking UU is very cool too. The Celtic flag is cool, but really traits are important for gameplay. I'm not that broad in the civs I play. I usually the Russians (Peter and Stalin), Vikings, Celts or Arabs; once or twice as the English, Germans and Incas, though I hate late UUs. Vast majority of my games have been either as the Celts or the Russians. Never used the civs in BTS, but I'll definitely play the Native Americans a lot, and the Khmer, possibly the Maya too. Ask the question again though a year after BTS comes out.

Lars_Domus Jun 26, 2007, 07:22 PM When I choose what civ to play, flavor is often a big factor. I enjoy to play with a people whose history I find interesting. Of course, I've found with the right piece of literature, any civ in the game can become the most exciting subject in the world. Though some civs always get me in the mood to play Civ, only by the mentioning of their very name. Among these, my ten would be:
Arabia
Aztec
Babylonia
Byzantium
Carthage
Egypt
Inca
India
Maya
Persia
Honorable mentions to Japan and the Celts.

Dutch Canuck Jun 26, 2007, 10:30 PM Okay, great start everyone! :)
I have tallied up the numbers so far and the more popular civs posts so far looks like this:
The Russians = 12 votes

The Arabs, Dutch, Inca, Persians & Vikings = 7 votes each
The Byzantines, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans = 6 votes each
The Americans, Celts, Germans, HRE, Japanes, Khmer, Mayans = 5 votes each
So, not a big sample of votes yet... It's not scientific, but interesting to see what's going on :)

bluedevil99 Jun 28, 2007, 04:32 PM I'll reserve comment on the BtS civs until I've actually played them :)
Incas (Quechas + Terrace + Financial + Industrious = overpowered)
Carthage (Financial + Charismatic = easy fast start, UB rules on water maps)
England (Two good financial leaders + stock exchanges + REDCOATS!!)
Persia (Immortals just rule)
Egypt (War Chariots rule almost as much)
Rome (Forum is an awesome UB, and Praets... 'nuff said)
Vikings (Serious water map ownage)
India (First civ I played, and I still like fast workers)
Mongols (There's just something about going to war as Gengis Khan...)
Russia (Man I miss when Catie was Creative/Financial...)
Grishnash Jun 28, 2007, 04:40 PM Ten is a lot to pick from but, ok, here's my top.
Zulu(Play them 'most' of the time)
Ethiopia (I wanna them in since civ3!)
Mail
Egypt
Russia
Germany
Okay, thats only six, but really, I mostly only play the Zulus and when BtS comes out I'd mostly play the Zulus or Ethiopia!
Dutch Canuck Jun 28, 2007, 11:53 PM Yay, everyone :) We are on a roll! The votes for the more popular civilizations continue to spread out as follows:

Do not account for leaders (i.e. ignore traits)
Interesting idea since I'd usually rank civs by their traits. Predicted top ten BtS civs based on unique buildings and unique units (and maybe with starting technologies as a tie breaker):
Holy Roman Empire
Greeks
Native Americans
Carthaginians
Celts
Arabs
Malinease
Spanish
Chinease
Zulu

Egyptians - I like spiritual and the War Chariot is great for early warmongering.
Incans - I like financial and the Quechua is great for early warmongering.
Romans - Praets are the best UU in the game and organized lets you take more cities.
Carthaginians - Charasmatic and financial are both great traits and the UB is amazing.
English - I like playing as Elizabeth because financial and philosophical allow me to run a highly effective fusion economy and Redcoats are usually a game clincher.
Indians - For some reason I've fared really well when playing as them. Probably the best civ for builders.
Malinease - Financial and spiritual are both great and the mint is useful as well.
Vikings - Aggressive and financial are fun together, though I don't have much use for the UB and UU.
Koreans - Financial + UU madness.
That's all I feel like listing.
Huayna Capac357 Jul 01, 2007, 12:49 PM I like:
1. Arabia
2. India
3. France
4. Incas
5. Mayas
6. Aztecs
7. Germany
8. Chinese
9. Japanese
10. Malinese
I am a little heavy on the pre-Columbians, but whatever.....:goodjob:
Duncan_Idaho Jul 01, 2007, 03:50 PM 1. Persia (easiest to play, cool people too)
2. Celts (gotta love em druids)
3. Japan (I'm a fan of almost everything Japanese)
4. Native America (When we do the ghost dance, the buffalo will return!)
5. Mongolia (My lucky civ, I always pwn with them on any game)
That's my favourite ones, can't really say which one is most favourite.
6. Inca (Industrious + financial + quechua + terrace :crazyeye: , cool culture)
7. Arabs
8. Aztecs (Gotta try out the mayan now)
9. Greece
10. Egypt (Chariots!)
SkippyT Jul 01, 2007, 04:17 PM 1. Korea - is my absolute favorite civ in the game. I always end on top when I'm playing them. It's like they attract everything positive and good in me. And there is absolutely no way a noob could lose a city with this powerhouse. :trophy:
2. Vikings - financial/aggressive is probably better than financial/aggressive but the UB and UU can't match the Korean ones. :trophy2nd:
3. Carthage - charismatic is the least of the three war-traits, so it makes sense that Carthage comes behind Korea and the Vikings. :trophy3rd:
---
4. Maya - this will be a total powerhouse with huge cities (ball court+expansive) meaning more merchants meaning more money for me to research.
5. Zulus - there are certain times when I just want to play with the impi and then I play with the impi! It is so fun!
6. Russia - I don't particularly like Cathy and Stalin, but Peter is the king of the specialist economy
7. Mali - he has nothing war-like to him (makes him weaker than Ragnar, Wang and Hannibal) but still Mansa is fun to play.
8. Inca - quite lousy UU and UB .. but good traits. Fine..
9. Celts - Boudica will be fun to play for sure
10. Germans - UU and UB come too late but Bismarck has wonderful traits
honorable mentions:
Japan, Rome, Native Americans, Persia, HRE.
Legba Jul 01, 2007, 05:29 PM These are the civs I usually play with sometimes for the traits and unique stuff, and other times because I'm just a fan of the civs...
1. Zulu - I <3 Impi and Ikhandas.
2. Native Americans
3. Maya
4. Vikings
5. Celts - I'd dig'em even more if we could get Vercingetorix!
6. Greeks - Huge fan of the Greeks.
7. Carthaginians
8. Aztec - They were pretty brutal
9. Indians
10. Egyptians
Dutch Canuck Jul 02, 2007, 11:49 AM Excellent job folks! :D Well, 54 people voted and below's a full listing of popular* civs from "vanilla", Warlords, and BTS as follows:
The Egyptians = 30 votes
The English = 29 votes
The Russians = 27 votes each
The Romans = 26 votes
The Chinese, Germans, Inca & Indians = 22 = votes each
The Carthaginians & Dutch = 20 votes each
After those 10 we have the following:
The Greeks, Japanese & Persians = 19 votes each
The French & Mali = 18 votes each
The Celts, Mayans & Vikings = 16 votes each
The Arabs & Byzantines = 15 votes each
The Ottomans = 13 votes
The Babylonians & Zulu = 12 votes each
The Native Americans & Portuguese = 11 votes each
The Americans & Aztecs = 10 votes each
The Ethiopians, HRE, Khmer & Mongols = 8 votes each
The Koreans = 7 votes
The Spanish = 5 votes
The Sumerians = 2 votes
Lowest showing BTS civ: Sumeria
Lowest showing Warlords civ: Korea
Lowest showing "Vanilla" civ: Spain
*: 'popular' being loosely defined as among the top 10 civilizations preferred whether in play, concept, and at the least, personal taste (trying best to avoid selection predicated upon leaders or traits - which is hard to do in some cases).
PS: This exercise isn't necessarily finished... don't be shy to add your top 10 favourites if you haven't done so :) I will check in daily for the next week... :D
lionheart Jul 02, 2007, 12:06 PM Ok, here goes..
Despite obviously not having played the BtS civs, I can definitely say there are quite a few that interest me greatly..
Nr. 1: The Dutch. Mostly because that's where I come from, but also because I really like the the leader traits and the UU. I'm not too happy about the UB, but hey.. :D
Nr. 2: The Japanese. On a map full of bad guys, they never fail me. With their free offensive and defensive traits, they offer an excellent combination for warmongerers and defensive players..
Nr. 3: The Romans (mainly under Augustus). They're the Romans, come on! I love the Praetorians, really like the Forum and there's just something special about hearing your units speaking Latin.. :)
And, in no particular order:
- The Americans (Washington)
- The Russians (Peter the Great)
- The French (Napoleon)
- The Germans (Bismarck)
- The Aztecs
- The English (Elizabeth)
- The Portuguese (Joao II looks very interesting!)
Dutch Canuck Jul 04, 2007, 03:31 PM ==bump===
Anymore? (My final post of results at end of week.)
My initial comment on these results: I am amazed as to how popular England & Russia as civs are doing - ahead of The Romans! At the other end of the spectrum I see Sumeria doing rather poorly... Perhaps not the best choice by Firaxis to add to the main game afterall? Look how the Dutch are doing by comparison - and the XP isn't out yet! I suspect reknown and popular Babylon, being the "child" of Sumeria, is the cause of this. (Sumeria got only 2 of 55 people listing the civ in their top 10 favourites... Ouch! Maybe Sumeria will play better than expected and gain some new respect...)
All-in-all very interesting! :D

One more time here's a full list showing the popularity* of the 34 civs from "vanilla", Warlords, and BTS with the civfantics community...
60 civfantics have listed their top 10 favourites (to play/want to play); this is a good sample size. So, survey says:
The top 10 favourite civilizations for civfantics to play are:

2nd) The English = 33 votes
3rd) The Romans & Russians = 30 votes each (i.e. a tie)

8th) The Mali & Vikings = 19 votes each
9th) The Arabs & Celts = 17 votes each
10th) The Byzantines & Mayans = 16 votes each
Looks more like top 20! ;) - and the rest in order too:

The Native Americans = 12 votes
The Americans = 11 votes
The Ethiopians = 10 votes
The HRE & Mongols = 9 votes each
The Khmer = 8 votes
The Koreans = 7 votes

The Sumerians = 3 votes
Lowest showing BTS civ: Sumeria
Lowest showing Warlords civ: Korea
Lowest showing "Vanilla" civ: Spain
Highest showing BTS civ: the Dutch
Highest showing Warlords civ: Carthage
Highest showing "Vanilla" civ: Egypt
*: 'popular' being loosely defined as among the top 10 preferred whether in play, by concept, and of course as per personal taste.
My comment on the results:
A larger survey would probably be more conclusive regarding the popularity of civs people like to play, but 60 is statistically a good sample size. Egypt has always been the greatest icon of the game, and it comes as no surprise it is at the top. Likewise Rome ranks well, and the non-ancient civs of England and Russia have ranked very highly too - higher than I expected, I thought that the Chinese would be at least as popular as England. But then again, the civs from "vanilla" are more likely ranked by playability over any other civ, so it may be that China doesn't play as well as England?
The BTS civs have yet to be released and not everyone has Warlords (I'd imagine most players do). Rankings of civs from Warlords are possibly more influenced by taste than mechanics right now - it is hard to say. (This survey isn't that thorough on distinctions anyways. Next one I do will possibly be more comprehensive.) Regarding the civs of "vanilla", why does Spain rank so low in popularity to play? I know Spain is often reviled as an AI opponent; but does that influence the choice to actually play as Spain? Or is it simply that the Spanish UB and UU do not perform as well as those of most other civs?
A civ's popularity to play can change with each iteration of the game, based on that civ's mechanical performance, and I suppose that factor more than anything will affect future marketing on civs in future expansions or versions of the civilization franchise. Thus, the Dutch of the BTS expansion are ranked best of all BTS civs based on player anticipation which itself is based on player game knowledge synthesizing pre-release information on that civ. But once people play the BTS expansion, we could see big shifts in civ popularity if there are surprises in civ playability! That will be fun to find out! :) As I mentioned in a previous post, Sumeria doesn't look so "hot", but perhaps that'll change after July?
Do these votes reflect what civs people want in their game? Well, only partially because while some civs may/may not be popular to play, we also have to consider those civs people like to play against. For example, the Mongols, a "vanilla" civ, do not rank high as a civ to play, but they have been a staple of the civilization franchise from the beginning, they were historically a very important force in changing history and as such probably more popular as an AI controlled civ to play against. This survey doesn't account for the popularity of AI controlled civs; at a later time, it would be interesting to see which civs civfantics prefer to play against - the favourite rivals! Then comparisons between civs to play and civs under AI control could be made and the results could be enlightening! But that is for another thread another time :)
I will consider a new survey of top 10 civs in the coming fall, once people have tasted the goodness of BTS; I'm looking forward to this expansion and the outcome! :D
Peachrocks Jul 07, 2007, 11:06 AM What surprised me was how popular England was and how the Zulu's did not rank so high. I thought there'd be a few warmongers who'd push the Zulu's up higher.
Sumeria doesnt look that bad, there are worse civs than it, its not on my list, but all the same I'll be sure to give them a run.

dutchking Jul 07, 2007, 04:00 PM @Dutch Canuck, You should turn these results in to a moderator, they could do something cool with it...
SkippyT Jul 07, 2007, 04:14 PM I've myself made a few games like these.
The best civ (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=186124)
The top 10 was like this:
Persia - 1. place
Carthage - 2. place
Scandinavia - 3. place
Rome - 4. place
Russia - 5. place
England - 6. place
India - 7. place
China - 8. place
Korea - 9.-10. place
Inca - 9.-10. place
I also made a Best UU (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=189363) game.
This was the top ten there:
1st place - English Redcoat
2nd place - Russian Cossack
3rd place - Chinese Cho-Ko-Nu
4th place - Indian Fast Worker
5th place - Viking Berserker
6th place - Ottoman Janissary
7th place - Korean Hwach'a
8th place - Carthaginian Numidian Cavalry
9th place - Japanese Samurai
10th place - Roman Praetorian
This game is going really differently it would appear. Egypt is winning this game but it was not even in top 10 in neither of those lists :p
