Darius was a bit disappointing looking... he needs to do a few pushups. I am postive that they copied the Justinian artwork from a well-known mosaic, right down to the oversized crown.

Jay, Justinian looks great. I would've recognized the leaderhead immediately. He also has this annoyed expression on his face, looks like he won't be a good neighbour.
But Charlemagne looks a bit too, umm, Italian ? Slavic ? Idon't know, but his hair and skin look are too dark.

I rather like the new leaderheads. Sure, some of them look a bit strange, but how do WE know that's not hwo they really looked? I commend Firaxis on these - some of them had to be build almost from scratch. It's not easy trying to create a whole new face.

I may never be satisfied.:)

As a consumer its our job to complain so we can get what we want, we're paying for it and if you just sit back and take it you're not going to necessarily get what you want. Even if what we complain about doesn't get fixed at least maybe firaxis will realize this and work to change and work off their mistakes.

If the BtS project's goal is making extra profit that I believe it should be. Then Poland and other civs would be added regardless in order to grab the largest market. The addition of HRE is an anomaly in both the historical section and normal business protocol. I don't care for how the leaders look and any other problems can be brushed aside. "As a consumer its our job to complain so we can get what we want"

This is a common statement that falsely glorifies one's role as a consumer by analogizing it to a "job". At best, you mean "As a consumer its our ROLE to complain so we can get what we want."

Someone could still pick nits with that statement and say that your role as a consumer is "speak" by buying what you want and not buying what you don't want.

Like me. :) That's the scenario I was looking forward to the most, and now that I know I can incorporate it into the main game with little or no effort on my part I'm pretty excited about it.

I'm also kind of liking the sound of Gods of Old.

Civ Defense gets a "Meh." from me. As silly as it sounded, I'd rather have Superrobo (or whatever it was called), because at least there was a possibility of salvaging stuff from it to use in other mods.

I think it's pretty obvious in reading their history of the HRE that they are saying it was not a "civilization" according many definitions, and that this is just a game so enjoy!

Another clue to their thinking along these lines: read the beginning of the Native American civ. They readily admit it is a hypothetical civilization had the various tribes united (not that they ever would have ... just an alternative line of history).

I really think all you posters who complain about this stuff should feel silly after reading this.

I'm not sure if I'm happy that it extends into the modern eras or not.

Late game with new religious model could be good, but a Mesopotamian religions could be good if limited to the ancient era like The Ancient Mediterranian Mod.

If nothing else, the religious model can be a base for modders.

It's confirmed. Firaxis really sucks in History. A whole biography on Charlemagne without mentionning the Franks and the Treaty of Verdun.

Apparently, Otto is supposed to have reunited the whole Carolingian Empire. Hmmm... interesting news. It seems that the whole Western part of Charlemagne's Empire has simply never existed according to Firaxis ! This is especially funny considering the Western part of Charlemagne's empire is mostly what he had actually inherited from Pippin.

Let's make of Napoleon the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire... after all, he conqueered it too. Furthermore, he had also been crowned Emperor in Rome !

My reactions to the Leader Heads.

Boudica: Oh yeah. That exaggerated yawn isn't implying anything at all ;)
Charlamagne: Lets see. Unusually tanned skin, bright blue eyes. Yep, this guy is definitely a tourist.
Darius: Kinda looks like Whoopi Goldberg, actually. Could definitely see him playing in Sister Act 3.
De Gaulle: "Roosevelt! For the last time, stay out of my wardrobe!"
Gilgamesh: I would say something sarcastic about ole Gil', but I'm afraid he'd eat my children if I did. I don't even have children!
Hammurabi: Is that one of the Kremlin's tower spires on his head?!? That's scary.
Justinian: Anyone else noticed how little he moves? It's almost like he's spaced out.
Joao: Looks like a pimp. I'd love to see this guy sing "Ridin' Dirty"
Lincoln: Does his head seem bloated above the brow?
Pacal: I'm surprised he isn't wearing a candy-necklace what with how young he looks.
Perciles: Relax, relax! Don't get your Hoplites in a tizzy!
Sitting Bull: His headress passes right through him. Thank you, Ghost Dance!
Suleiman: Ben Stein needs to hook this guy up with some Clear Eyes.
Suryavarman II: And the word of the day is jaundice!
Willem van Oranje: I guess somebody woke up on the wet side of the dike, again.
Zara Yaqob: I wonder if he "Tanqueray's".

:joke:
Having said this, I love every one of the new leader heads. Darius, despite his appearance, really captures the esence of Persia. In fact, all of the LHs seem to greatly represent their culture. Some look really awesome, too (Gilgamesh, Joao, ect). This just makes me want BTS all the more.

Many table-top wargames enthusiasts will recognize them as modelled on the graphics used for unit counters - IIRC the original Axis & Allies board game used such symbols for units, and Squad Leader did too. Did the table-top games borrow these unit symbols from history? I'm not sure :( I guess Firaxis used them to bestow a more familiar WWII "feel" to the game for wargamers who play that scenerio?

And speaking of unusual unit button art <g>, did anyone notice the unusual unit buttons on the screen shots of the WW2:Road to War scenario? What are they?

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about (the little symbol like a box with an 'X' in it) those are standard symbols used by NATO militaries to indicate unit type. The 'X' is infantry, a single '/' from corner to corner is cavalry, an oval in the center of the box is armor, an oval with an 'X' is mechanized infantry, a box with a dot in the center is artillery, and so on.

The three little gold whatsits above the main symbol indicate the size of the unit. Unfortunately, I can't tell from the screenshots whether the whatsits are three 'I's which would make the units regiments, or three 'X's which would make them corps. They might even be three dots, which would be company-sized, but that seems too small scale. Or they could just be there to look pretty. :crazyeye:

The scenario list is interesting: It looks like Chaos and Superobo are gone and there is a strange sounding 'Civ Defense' instead.

Also is the music supposed to be the title screen music? I'm kind of mixed on it.

Why no Chaos and Superrobo? Chaos sounded really cool!

It's been confirmed, certain scenarios were dropped from BTS and Civ Defense was added.

The music is growing on me...
Ditto -- that makes at least 2 of us! :D

I even left the window up with the music playing as I perused other sites for another 15 minutes or so.

Well thats one of us...

I think its worse than warlords music if that says anything.

The first twenty seconds sickens me... it's horrible! But once the choral arrangement begins, it is actually not half bad. Although not a fan of any of the three main songs, I'd rate this one slightly higher than Warlords, but eons away from Baba.

Eh, are Dog Soldiers meant to clean up Macemen? The websites demo of it has it beating the Macemen without any loss.

They must've been heavily promoted, otherwise they wouldn't have won (6 vs 8)

You go to "Civilizations", then find the "Maya", then click "New Unit" (I think), then click to "see it in action".

well, the dog soldier is defending..
if it has been fortified a few turns, and have 25% fortify bonus, then even if it was totally unpromoted, it would have a 29.7% chance of winning vs an unpromoted maceman

Or it got lucky.

It happens.

Yeah, actually it's kinda similar to the Babylonian Bowman taking out a Longbowman or the Cataphract taking out a Cavalry. So there's a theme there of sorts of demoing them up against stronger opponents.

Those little unit videos are just mock ups of the unit in action. I don't think they are supposed to represent any actual in-game situation.

Whoever took the screenshots for the WW2 scenario was a lazy git.

All from first turn and worst of all showing nothing interesting going on!
