Pff... What a question. Civ of course. On Macintosh. Didn't have choice. It was one of the 10 Mac games available in 1994 http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
FYI Warcraft 1 & 2 are more tactic games than strategy games (micromanagement vs macromanagement). Somebody didn't understand? http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hey it's ok man...

Maybe this is not a top question but I was just wondering... http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
Not every body had the chance to have CIVILISATION as their first st.game...

I liked your definition of strategy games and I agree with you. Many people (like me in this case) though tend to call Strategy Games the wrong games...

On a computer, or just a strategy game?

My first Civ-like game was called "King".
I played it once in 1982 on an Intel "Isis" microprocessor development system. Never seen it since.

The idea of King was that you had to manage a small state for 7 years, planting so many crops, taxing so much money etc. After 7 years you might get re-elected. I seem to remember the goal was simply to stay in power for as long as possible. I managed 19 years.

But it got me hooked. I was looking for something like that for years and years before I found Civ.

That's a crime, not to play Civ as the 1st strategy game...

Hey! That's the same game that got me! My brother-in-law worked at HP and let me "computer-sit" one of their desktop computers for a couple weeks in 1980 or '81 I think. I've always wanted to have something like that game... but never bothered to look. Finally I got Civ last year.

Hey wait a minute, I remember. Civ was NOT my 1st strat game ever. It was Peter Molyneux' Populous. On PC. That's it. Quite addictive too. And it had already a direct-link multiplayer option. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/yeah.gif

Tactics II by Avalon Hill.

But I hated it, and begged my uncle to let me play War at Sea with him. After that, my addiction to strat games was confirmed. I still play Panzer Leader & Blitz, and am an absolute "Diplomacy" junkie. Then Civ came along and changed it all.http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

I didn't know what I was doing when I wrote that my first was Warcraft II. Firstly it's not a real strategy game as GenghisK said. H?kan Ericson reminded me that it was Risk. I first played that with my father at the age of 9.
Ok, ok, some may say it's too much based on luck but it is still a str.game.

Hey H?kan I'm just realising that THIS was your #1000 post everybody was waiting for! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif Thank for choosing my topic to say your Last Words !

Hmmm my first strategy game was probably Civ1, but I'm not sure. I got a bunch of games at more or less the same time, and there were some good games among them:

Civ 1
Centurion
Pirates
Megalomania
and some other stuff!!!

But I know that Dune2 was the first real time strategy game I ever played!!!

Then AH's Blitzkrieg and PanzerBlitz!

I'd say chess counts. It's a strategy game. It's probably my first, then.

(Well, I suppose you could go WAAAAY back to the mid-1980s and say checkers might have been my first strategy game, such as it is. Hm. That's a tough question, actually.)

Oh man, I forgotten all about that game! I believe that would be my first computer/counsole strategy game also. Nobunaga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kindoms coming soon after that.
And if you include the game of luck known as "Risk" as a strategy game then War2, which is a real time Strategy game, must also be considered to be one. Let's not get into an arguement about Tactics and Strategy. They blend together so much that it just boils down to personally preference when it comes down to computer games.

Cool! I was beinning to think that I'd dreamt the whole thing. I had to wait till 1998 before I got Civ.

I've also played the following strategy board games since about 1960:
* Chess
* Go
* Hnefetafl

Well, I see that is just strategy games, not just PC, so my answer is 'Battle Cry', a really bad American civil war game that was endorsed by American Heritage magazine. The first real strategy game I played was Avalon hill's D-Day. I also played the NES strat games like Nobunaga, and Shingin, as well as Romance. On a PC, the first was Civ-2. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif

In this case, if it's not just about PC games, I think I've first played chineese chess. When I was 5 years old.

Az, Hakan didn't choose your topic to post his 1000th (see off-topic). In fact his status is constantly updated... That explains why you can see he's a musketeer here. Anyway, he isn't superstitious because was I him, I'd wait for posting my 1001st one before heading off.

Yes, Chess is a "strategy" game, but it -- and the Chinese game of Go -- belong in categories unto to themselves as two of the greatest games ever invented. (I also place Diplomacy in this category; a good strategy game, but the emphasis is sufficiently distinct from most "strategy" games that it too deserves a category unto itself.)

When I think of strategy games, I tend to limit the definition to games that belong to a gaming heritage begun by Avalon Hill (Tactics II) and the old 3M line of games (e.g., "Stocks and Bonds," "Rail Baron," etc.); a heritage of which Civ2 is currently the highest evolved representative.

Command and Conquer!!!!! Oh man, that game sucked SOOOOOoooooooo much! Hand of Nod? What the hell is that? It was so lame. But hey, I was only 12!

Oh, you mean board game? Uh...I was unbeatable in checkers! I was also pretty good at bridge. My first EVER game I've ever played was rock paper scissors. Oh yeah, lots of tactics there. I still don't get why some people don't seem to know how to win in rock paper scissors. They just keep doing rock, then paper, then scissors, allowing me to intervene and win. Mwahaha!

Hey does Sim City count as a Strategy Game? If so then that was my first PC strategy game, if not then it was Civlization. I played chess well before either of those.

Unfortunately, I played it directly off the disks(4 floppies!) and had to swap disks whenever pretty much anything was done =)

First computer game I was addicted to (that I remember) was Empire on the PC. Still play it occasionally.

First Sid Meyer game I played I think was Silent Service, really a great game.

Then I went on to Civ 1, and ruined the next few years of my life... Discovered Civ 2 and multiplayer, and now wish I had more time to squander on this. My 5 year old son is getting hooked, too, but he can't read much so he always wants me to handle the diplomacy.

I started in Chess at about age 8 (46 years ago) and Go a few years later. Still play both of these. Played a lot of Risk at one time.

Not that anybody asked, exactly.
