View Full Version : Early release of BTS?!?

Hi all,

I pre-ordered BTS only 2-3 days ago. Today the games store told me I can come in to collect BTS on Wednesday 18th!!! :shifty:

The games store shall remain nameless to protect the guilty!

If that holds true - I'll post some info here...

p.s. small hint - it is a well known chain (i.e. not some random store).

According to a post on Apolyton, BTS is downloadable as bittorrent.

Wanna run the risk that the one you downloaded didn't just DL from me? ;)

I believe you would, just not seeing how ( unless you putted yourself a infected copy... that would be just mean)

Checking out the UK store websites, they have BTS listed as coming in 20th July instead of the 27th July. I can't see it being released until the official dates Firaxis gave out, but it does seem unusual that they're all quoting 20th July.

Isolated VMWare machine routed exclusively as a DMZ. Then supernode myself and re-publish any BtS torrents I see, after adding my bits. If you're careful, it'll re-publish exactly the same so when someone else uploads that little bit of the whole torrent from you, it screws them. ;)

Sneaky, but I hate seeing my 12 months of work on the game end up like this, even before release.

I just did a reasonably thorough search of torrents (and I'm *cough*ahem..lets say pretty well informed in torrent kingdom), and what I'm guessing someone at apolyton has seen, is spam included in various torrent sites that purports (how u spell that word?) to point to torrent info when it doesn't.

Even a quick google search for "beyond the sword torrent" produces several results, none of them are actual torrents. These sites give a bad name to some of us who like to share stuff legally *cough* *splutter* (mutter- black pots and kettles in no particular order)

If there really is a complete BTS torrent out there, I'd personally be amazed, and would want nothing to do with it, I'll be visiting the store on Friday (some have said this is release day) and demanding they sell me the game :)

What, you think I wouldn't do it?

Actually, that was kind of directed at both of you (you and the thread starter), i.e. a) I don't believe that BTS really is out and b) I don't see how that would work.

(AFAIK for BT the download is divided up in chunks and those are protected by a checksums. So, as r_rolo1 already said, all you could do would be to set up a fake torrent, but not really infect downloads started by others.)

EDIT: You posted while I was writing this. Interesting. You obviously know more about the matter than me. :)

EDIT2: Hm .. thinking a little about it, while I'll concede that it might be technically possible to tarnish a torrent download in the way you described, it's probably extremely difficult. Otherwise, there wouldn't be fully working torrents out there all the time. Especially if you factor in that the companies of the pirated games have assets far beyond of that of a single person (like you) at their disposal.
(Also, small nitpick, wouldn't changing bits in the download only screw it up, not infect it with a virus?)

Well, the official thing is 23 for North America and 27 for Europe... The other ones are vented by ressellers ( maybe to increase sells ( remember the 10th July of Amazon? ;) )

The release date is the 23rd, for NA. That is when it will be out.

The above person most likely was misinformed, and given the release date of Civ Gold Edition which comes out on the 18th.

I've seen a BTS torrent too, but even if it was a working copy and not a fake, the uploader's comment said there's no crack yet, so at least it'll be useless to most people for now (not that it should take the usual suspects long to whip up a crack if it is a proper copy). But of course you never know if the advance copy it's based on was actually the latest version, one might just download a bottle full of bugs there.

All of the European and Australian stores seem to say the 20th while all of the North American stores seem to say the 24th.

@Laurence: Can you at least let us know if you're in North America or not?

I can see the store getting BtS confused with Civ IV:Gold, however having BtS and Civ IV Gold out on the shelves on the same day would make perfect business sense. You would tempt a lot of people who don't have Civ IV into walking out of the store with both.

While having BtS a week early would be nice I'm not holding my breath.

20th July also in Italy.I think that for Europe the right date is 20 not 27, 20 july release date allow shops to ship the game on 23 which is monday and is the USA release date, 20 july infact is friday so it's unlikely that BtS will be shipped to our home that day.Hopefully we will get our hands on that game between 23-24 July otherwise we have to wait until end July/first days of August.

So, does this mean whatever mod from you is suspect? I mean, you are threatening a certain kind of people now... ;)

Actually I'd be more liable to trust dales mods since he got so pissed on this. I've been playing civ since it came out, each version gets patches and several expansions, and the next version is usually out before I'm done enjoying the last one.

Unlike, say music, where the performer does one piece of work and then reaps royalties forever on nothing at all, Sid supports the game after I get it, and improves on it, plus he usually gives modders the ability to alter the games with freely distributed mods, and even brings the better modders into the official team.

Also unlike music where someone who improves a song and sings it in public is liable to be sued, and has really no chance of joining the band.

The contrasts can go on forever. I generally see copyright laws as theft from the public, and point to great works such as the odessy and illiad which were altered through eons before reaching their present form, and the silliness of not allowing people to write of their life experiences because they include say . . . watching a cartoon who's name is copyrighted.

But stealing BTS before it's even released? If nobody every paid a dime to firaxis for this game why would they give us that third expansion I want? Why would they give us that next patch? That next tool to help mod?

Firaxis does something beyond just singing one song on stage, and they have a job supporting the product after it's out. Unlike micheal jackson stealing royalties on all those beatles songs he never sang. lol

This is where the "moral grey area" becomes much less grey. I can honestly say that bit-torrenting this work isn't just stealing from firaxis, it's stealing from yourself and the rest of us. That kind of person . . . is the guy who isn't thinking about morality (which can come into play with other kinds of copyright) or legality, or even value (what is the value of something in infinite supply?) but of sheer stupidity.

Firaxis is still working supporting the game, there is no infinite supply of support, games never make money from a paid concert, and no studio is taking all of sids money (I hope). The only reason to nab this is greed and stupidity. If you get zapped on that . . . I'm less than sympathetic.

Anyway - I'm in Australia. And the games store (big chain - can be found in the US aswell) has confirmed that BEYOND THE SWORD (not Gold Edition) can be picked up on the 18th.

Maybe thats when they get stock, and they got it wrong - I dont know - but Wednesday the 18th in Australia I will advise (which is Tuesday night for you guys because of Timezones differences) if I got it or not.

See here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/002-1104254-4643255?ie=UTF8&nodeId=468502#guarantee) for Amazon's price garantee rules.
The cheapest price in germany i have seen so far is at bol. de at around 24 €.That's odd. Bol.com (The Dutch Bol) is 4 euro's cheaper.

Isn't that a bit... expensive?
As mentioned before the game is available at around 27 Aussie-dollars. I paid 31 Australian dollars (20 euro).

Trust me, a game/expansion like this would never be released at AU$27 in Australia - that just sounds far too cheap, and frankly customers can easily afford it and happily pay that much. It doesn't bother me though really, as this and Civ 4 are the only games I've bought for the past 3 or 4 years. If anything it's underpriced considering the value I squeeze from it! :)

The higher price here could be due to any number of factors - some of which I wouldn't really understand. For one, the gaming retail market here is not so competitive (I suspect) as in Europe or the States so generally game prices will be a little higher and presumably even moreso on game releases.

Moreover, it is in a shopfront which would have higher overheads (costs) than most internet-based traders so I would expect a higher sale price than from, say, Amazon or bol.com etc.

I bought Civ Chronicles (Civ1/2/3/4 + cardgame) for a bit less than AU$50 (€29,95), so I'd doubt an expansion would cost that price.
But mind you, I ordered it online, I didn't go to the shop (where it was €50,- ~AU$75,-).

I wonder why?I just had a look at the prices of Amazon.com for those games and they are outrageous ($38 for Civ4 and $28 for Warlords (against $24 and $18,-, CivChron is $41)).

Maybe because the rate of the dollar against the euro?

Or maybe it's something else? Higher game-tax in the US maybe? Or different post & packaging ratings?)

Or maybe there's a more competitive market in Europe? (which implies there might be a slight monopoly or price agreements in the US?)

I rung the store today to see if I could pick it up early ().

They still have the ETA as tomorrow (for sale), but they dont have stock yet. Unless it arrives this afternoon, they cant actually sell it to me :(

But in saying that - it is definetely 100% Beyond the Sword, and not the gold edition, and they stick to their story that the system has a 'sale date' of the 18th.

I think you're getting your knickers in a knot for no reason. We ALL know that this game will be pirated like all games are. Half the posters in the Warlords section could be playing pirated Warlords (and I would bet a large minority of them are), this time next week BTS will be in that exact same situation, there'll be cracked exe's up on gamecopyworld and there'll be hundreds of opinions and threads about the game right here from both legitimate and illegitimate players.

Nobody is saying they can't give their opinions; I am simply trying to point out that pirating is frowned upon by this site, and any user who openly talks about it in a positive light will get warned and his post/thread will be deleted. If you don't believe me, I could point you to at least half a dozen threads I've seen that started with something like, "I have this no-CD cracked Warlords..."

But there is a point to that. It's better to approach the problem with 100% enforcement of the rule, since otherwise there is a serious chance of the forum slowly degenerating into crack/pirate rubbish. Never underestimate the ability of internet denizens to wreck anything if left unchecked.

I won't argue with that. There are people who buy the game fairly and then lose the CD or whatever and think it's unfair to have to pay for it again. I don't disagree with the sentiment. I am merely pointing out, however, that going the route of the pirates is not tolerated on this site, and I personally would steer clear of it.

BTW, several of those threads started innocently enough, "I... have to travel a lot / have several computers / have a laptop... and don't want to lug the CD around. Is there a no-CD crack?" These are also not allowed.

Anyway, let's not derail the thread...

I'm wondering if the supposed early European release has to do with the fact that BtS is supposed to be on DVD over there and on CD in North America.

but the comments basically state, some people are having trouble getting it even installed. and no wont work without a crack, but are other tools that can get around that. One guy reports actually having it working, the rest, no. For some people it means it would be quicker to wait the 2 days (well thats how long here in oz) and buy it than try install it themselves.

Also i'd consider possibility of a pre release version? the guy uploading it didnt seem to have much interest in what he had hold of.. else he would have uploaded it without asking hehe

Aye there lots comments on minninova about the BTS torrent, also a thread in their forum, started by a guy saying somefin like "i got a copy of this, curious if anyone wants me to torrent it?" followed by a guy saying yer... and thats about it lol.

but the comments basically state, some people are having trouble getting it even installed. and no wont work without a crack, but are other tools that can get around that.

I would'nt download that.. its probably a virus that will destroy your comp..lol

But if it is the real thing that sucks for sales..

Because I can purhase-download-extact-install and be playing it in an hour or less after seeing it depending on the connection. Plus no cd/dvd to worry about, and I can download it again if I lose it.

Why would the forum let u post this? n not delete?

Because my guess is that
Its a big inside joke..

"hey everyone go download the virus".. type thing

Edit:that was aimed towards vilemerchant

Sadly, companies spend more on high end piracy blockers that are merely speed bumps to pirates, than they "lose" in sales to piracy...

Since the first piece of commercial software was released, people have pirated it..its a fact of life, like the wind blowing and the sun shining

Theres never been a real study done on the loss of revenue because of piracy, because theres no actual lost profit.

The fact is, if someone pirates a game, they werent going to pay for it regardless of if you can stop piracy or not.

If anything, some people are more persauded to purchase a game that uses a CD Key for multiplayer, with no safedisc or anti pirating software or "features" if they have pirated the game. And will be turned off from the "try before you buy" attitude, if theyre upset with the measures the developer took to keep them from (illegally i know) trying thier game before they purchased it.

If game designers didnt have to be the song birds for thier publishers, and didnt release games that needed several patches to work to thier maximum potential, people wouldnt need to try before they buy

If you want an example of how anti piracy hurt a game, look at Operation Flashpoint Armed Assault...or Sword of the Stars

If you want an example of how lack of anti piracy and good developer communication (and a good publisher, Stardock ftw) helped a lackluster game reach great sales numbers, look no further than Galactic Civilizations 2

edit:

And I find it silly, having worked in the industry, that any developer would point fingers at a pirate. I know for a fact most all of the major game development studios have pirated and unregistered software on thier work machines. If you think every dev for every game youve ever played, paid for Maya, or 3ds max, or wrote all thier own inhouse software, youd be sadly mistaken

When people stop speeding, and litering, and doing drugs, and cheating on thier taxes..

Maybe people will stop pirating software too...

Heh...

I've just bought the game via direct2drive.com; I was told it was not available for play yet, but was available for pre-load. Once I'd bought it, I discovered I couldn't pre-load it at all and it's not going to be available for download until the 24th July. Ah well, at least it's not too far away and I can finish off (for now) my Civ III project in peace this weekend before moving onto Civ IV.

This is the first time I have been waiting for a product before release, and been waiting in anticipation for its delivery. Usually I get them a year or so after they are released. Like, I only got Warlords in March, and Civ4 August before that. But this prerelease excitement is great!! :D I really like this xp too. Can't wait!

The above is correct, and in these circumstances you could earn a week-long ban for it to preclude your talking about it pre-release.

Sorry, I'm confused - what exactly is verboten? Talking about the game pre-release? But if we're getting it from retailers, it's released, isn't it?

Talking about pirating the game.

It's always against the rules, but the sort of "I got it on bittorrent" posts that we've seen around here lately will get particular attention.

Anscheinend liefert bol.de schon großzügig aus :)

In short: In Germany some have bought it also today in some stores and online-stores.

I bought a copy of 'Beyond the Sword' today (Wednesday July 18th) in a shop called the Music Store in the center of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It was the only store in the city that sold the game as far as I could tell. They had multiple copies, so if you live in or around Rotterdam, you can get your own copy there.
