Hello, I have been furiously attempting to add some new resources into a mod but every time I mess with the gamefont.tga and the gamefont75.tga something goes terribly wrong. The funny thing is the icons work fine in the world view, but also ruined the happy face and those set of icons, which I did not mess with at all. No icons work in city view at all, but almost all work in world view. I kinda understand how it works, (dont mess with pink lines and change the little blueish/green dot as needed), and also have added the new icons to the alpha selection. I have been pulling my hair out for hours now messing with this damn thing. could someone please explain how to do this better than the tutorial about adding resources. it made the icon thing seem simple but it is the hardest part of the entire process! Everything works exactly as intended except these icons, its driving me insane. Thanks for any help in advance ;)

Here are the tga's if you need em.

There's no blue dot in you fourth commerce and the smiley icons at the bottom lines. You must fix that first and see if it solve the issue. If not, it must be an XML referencing issue.

well what happened here is I used the icons from the Porges Attitude mod, if I load it up exactly as I got it, everything works fine (besides the last few resources). But as soon as I added more resources it messes up. I think it has something to do with the Lsystem crap.

I think I may just use the normal icons anyhow and just replace a few like oil, and uranium, with my needed resources, like cotton and tobacco, since my mod wont be using any modern resources. I dont know if the smilies need the dots anyhow, I used a snippet of python to do those, they seem to work fine, untill I added more resources. After adding resources, the normal smiley became the health icon.

If you're trying to edit them in Gimp I can give you a step by step guide on how to edit those buggers successfully. However I don't use Photoshop so I can't help you if that's how you're editting them.

I use whatever works best for the job. I have PS and Gimp, so if you could tell me how in Gimp that would be fantastic. I already know some of the basics but I feel like I'm missing a crucial step or two.

I, too, would be very interested in a step by step guide to editing res icons in Gimp or PS.

I find it easier to use paint from Dxtbmp in combination with paintdotnet or whatever you use to make your art.

I am interested in repairing RESMOD's gamefonts. So I am looking forward to a tutorial of fixing faulty fonts.

thanks =]

So, you have problems with your font files' icons too ?

Hey guys!

I've been so busy with summer stuff, traveling, etc, I lost track of this thread. What I discovered making my own mod is that any error in mounting the new icons on the GameFont grid can cause problems not related to that icon! One of the most common issues is that a slight imprecision mounting a religion icon will cause resource icons to swap with each other... even though the religion icon works perfectly.

That means the problem you're having is not going to be fixed by altering the icon that's malfunctioning!

Here is a link to a thread I started when I was first doing res icons for my scenario/mod, "Foundations of Empire." It mostly lays out a step-by-step regimen I used before I finally worked out all the kinks.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=156677

Hope it's useful!

EDIT: If you don't want to read through the whole thread, jump to post #16.

EDIT 2: One bright spot: I just did icons for my new mod and I blazed right through it with almost no glitches. So the skills you acquire from doing this the right way once do seem to be permanently acquired. Whew!

Hi guys,

I'm attempting to delve into the world of res icon editing and I've ran into a small problem. I'm attempting to add an icon for Shinto religion, only when I get the icon in game, it comes up with a white background which I don't believe is supposed to be there. Any one care to tell me where I goofed?

Ripple, the problem lies in your transparency layer.

OK, I am a real newb at graphics editing, so I have no idea how to fix it. Can anyone explain how to fix this problem in Photoshop? It would be MUCH appreciated.

I think I can actually answer this.... As I said earlier, I've played around with this many times over. I have Photoshop Elements 5, not sure what version you have, but its probably almost exactly the same.

Start PS and load up your file.

Goto Select on the menu bar. Load Selection. Select source as Alpha 1, and Operation as new selection and hit Ok. Use selection brush tool to adjust the selection to fit around your new icons how you want them to. Go back to Select, save selection. Again go to Alpha 1 as source, and this time select Replace selection as the operation. Save the file.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Shiggs713, I tried what you said but the icons were messed up in my game afterwords so I didn't do something right. :)

When I hit OK after Loading the Selection, these circles popped up all the icons. I used the selector tool (the upper left box, right?) and selected the 2 icons in question. The circles stayed on them and disappeared from all of the other icons. I then followed the Save selection directions you provide. Am I missing a step?

well, probably something got messed up... did the icons just look funny, or did they get switched? (for example when I messed up, the happy face icon turned into the healthy icon for some unknown reason, I never even touched those 2!) These icon files are a major pain in the ass. I can code C++, python, xml, html, cobal, ect. ect. and these damn icons are about the hardest thing to do that i have ever seen. :(

When I made my mod, I realized the game doesn't use the alpha channel for resources in the large GameFont file, the in-game and city screen uses icons from GameFont_75. I was having problems so i changed one Icon at a time, main channel first, then rebooting.

I got all the main channel res icons in ok. Then I started with the alpha channel. After a few icons the city billboard icons(health,happiness...) messed up. So I undid my last change and now everything works.

I'd suggest when adding resources not to mess with the alpha channel in the large GameFonts file.
