I don't have Warlords, only CivIV. Everything I've looked at seems to be geared for the Warlords update.

Check the downloads database, any not specifically for warlords should work.

I've already looked, unfortunately, not all are marked as such, and it's not until the file is downloaded that the version is apparent, hence my question. I'd really rather not download a dozen maps to find one that actually works without requiring Warlords.

The only one I have is the one packaged with the game. What's wrong with that one? You don't like America starting in 4000 BC?

There's no map that even closely resembles "Earth" packaged with the game.

earth18civs come packaged with the game. If for some odd reason you don't have it you can get it here (http://www.gameflood.com/Mashup/Index.cfm/Civilization-IV-CIVIV-CIV4/Maps-Levels-Missions/Earth-18-civs/Display/intMapID/573).

I would also suggest the vanilla version of Rhye's and fall of civilization here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=176754)

All you have to do to any map is this to get a vanilla map:

You need to uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' under Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options. This should then allow to change 'CIVWARLORDSWBSAVE' to 'WorldBuilderSaveFile'

Then just make sure you uncheck it all over again, that way your extensions dont get messed up.

Thanks! I'll check to see if I have that map, and if not, I'll grab it. Also, thanks for the info on "vanilla". I had seen that on a couple of downloads, and wondered if that was what it meant.

You need to put them into(Vanilla only) My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Saves/Worldbuilder
