When ever I select custom rules it gives me that error(see thread title) Then when ever I choose edit custom rules or a specific custom rule to edit it gives me that error.

When ever I choose custom map or custom player data it gives me that error. When ever I click on a spot to start laying terrain it gives me that error.

Who knows what else will give me that error, just about anything and everything in the editor I guess :crazyeye:

which editor do you have?

TruePurple
Jul 23, 2007, 04:59 AM
You mean there are editors other then the one that came with the game? Or different editors that came with the game? Or just different versions?

"Civ3ConquestsEdit" 1.03
&
BIC file version 12.08, what ever that is. What are they talking about?

sorry, I'm taking driver's ed and didn't have time to reply yesterday.

I wanted to know if you had the editor that shipped with the vanilla version and it was hacked, or if you had the conquests editor. Is this on Mac or Windows? On my Mac, right clicking on the civ III edit icon and selecting "show package contents" brings up a folder that has all the files that the editor uses to run. dunno if that's how you access it on a Windows, but if you can't find it or if some files are missing, the editor might not work. could you post a screenshot of the error please? it might help some.

btw, have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the editor?

[edit] it just occurred to me that your access privelages might not be right to let you write to the file you open. are you on a shared computer with multiple accounts?

Conquest editor.

Hmm I tried the editors for plain and PTW. I think they gave the error once but not after.

My civ 3 is civ3 gold + conquest. My PC is IBM clone-win98.

I'm on a PC thats just my own with only my profile.

How do I just uninstall/reinstall the editor only?

Well... i've never had to uninstall the editor, but the only file I can find for it is the one you click to open it up, so i'm guessing you trash tht abd put the disc back in. from there, you should be able to drag the app back into your hard drive. i'll get out my disc and see what i can come up with.

what does IBM clone-win 98 mean?
I'm assuming that you're running windows 98, but I don't get the clone part, although that is probably my PC ignorance:)

Just about all nonmac/apple PC's are based on IBM design that was backwards engineered etc. In otherwords "a PC" (though technically a mac is a Personal Computer as well :p) I can't remember how much IBM allowed it but it certainly made for a more open system then apple PC's.

I believe dos (windows precursor) was a microsoft/bill gates backwards engineering rip of IBM's original Operating System.

Doesn't anyone besides sniper know anything about the editor?

When you click on a tile to place some terrain, does it keep placing it everywhere you move your mouse?

TruePurple
Jul 25, 2007, 07:44 PM
Yes, until I click again. Where the other editors (plain and PTW which don't give the error now) just place terrain as long as your holding down the mouse button.

What does that indicate?

Unnamed_Sniper
Jul 25, 2007, 08:30 PM
well, i refer to anything that runs Windows as a "PC" and apples as "Macs" although you are technically right:)

I tried to un/re install my editor, and my disc has recently become scratched or something, so it won't mount on my computer until i get it polished. I think that something weird happened to your app resource files and they were installed in the wrong location. do you know if the editor is compatible with win98? CivIII works on my old MacOS9, but the editor only works on OSX. if you still have the box or a manual etc. that lists sys reqs, you might want to check.

TruePurple

Well the technically correct thing to say is "IBM clone" I think (it does run OS other then windows you know) I think even old game requirements used to list it like that. I suppose it got the "PC" moniker because it was wide spread (thus the generic name) plus easier to say and not alot of people even know what IBM clone indicates any more.

Sniper, I already mentioned that the plain civ & PTW civ editors both work fine. So how could it be the conquest editor is incompatable with win98?

Does yours do it all the time or only sometimes?

Mine gives the same error message and does the same thing if the editor is left open for a while. I exit and reopen and everything is back to normal.

TruePurple

All the time for me.

Virote_Considon
Jul 26, 2007, 09:41 AM
When it does that for me, I just do the same as Bugfatty300. Maybe you're just unlucky recently with it? I'd suggest to keep trying.

TruePurple

It does it right away after opening it, I've opened and closed it a bunch of times with PC reloads inbetween. It ALWAYS gives the error. But only the editor for conquest.

Doesn't anyone know anything about this error? (I mean its cause and stuff, more importantly how to fix it)

once again, just a guess, but have you tried trashing the icon for the editor and then "reinstall"dragging it off the disc and into your hard drive?

TruePurple
Aug 04, 2007, 03:29 AM
Trashing the icon? You mean its EXE?

Aug 04, 2007, 11:48 AM
Yeah. Go to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests

Delete the "Civ3ConquestsEdit" file and then drag it back into conquest via the CD.

Unnamed_Sniper
Aug 04, 2007, 05:20 PM
yep. that might work, unless the editor installed some extra files somewhere

TruePurple

I couldn't find the conquest editor just sitting on the cd. Must be incoded in the install files. So I can't do as you two suggest.

Unnamed_Sniper
Aug 05, 2007, 08:19 PM
did you look everywhere? like in folders and stuff? mine was seperate, if i recall correctly. although it might have been an option after running the installer. try running the installer again and see if it pops up.

TruePurple
Aug 07, 2007, 04:53 AM
Theres something called "EREG US" but no option to install editor, i tried repair, that didnt work. I tried reinstall(deleting editor beforehand).. that didn't work. I've now uninstalled and reinstalled.

Still gives the write error. But now it says "Error: Could not open file art\terrain\x_airfields and detect pxc. Check to make sure the editor is run from the folder where civilization III was installed" When I first load it.

So now its even worse! BTW its running from the folder conquest was installed, not the main civ3 folder.

Unnamed_Sniper

then try mpving it to the main folder and try finding that art file. My vanilla editor only runs from the folder where civ 3 was installed. I need to make an alias on the desktop to open it from there.
the location of my folder is Macintoch HD/GAMES/Civilization 3/Civ3 Edit

Well the ptw editor worked fine from the ptw folder. But now civ3 doesnt work at all
