Well, this is in my opinion a rather serious problem. I started a new game (Playing Now), Regenerated the Map a few times and then thought I would take a break. When trying to load the Autosave, I ran into a serious problem. There was just one saved file (look for Screenshot 1).

It had the correct date when I quit playing (275 BC, Turn 104). However, everything else had been reset to the beginning of the game (Screenshot 2). BTW this is also the map I initially got, before I regenerated it when starting the game in the first place.

I'll see if I can reproduce the problem later.

Started another game, regenerated, played a few things and quit, then reloaded. Worked. So this does not happen to me always and I am not sure what exactly caused this problem. I recommend everyone to save manually.

^Yeah, I usually do, but I have a small word of advice that has something to do with the Autosave. If you go into the Civ IV Config (.ini) file you can set the autosave to save every _ turns. Just a random tip.

A good tip, but it wouldn't have helped here. Normally Civ 4 makes three Autosaves for me, seemingly as part of the bug there was only the one which didn't work.

You can also set the number of autosaves it makes in the ini file. I ussually play with an autosave every 2 turns, with a total of 10 autosaves.

Well, I didn't start a new game. Besides, the bug is not really about there being only one Autosave instead of three. The problem is that that one Autosave is messed up.

If you look at the 2nd Screenshot you'll see that I'm im turn 104 (which is correct) but back at the beginning of the game in every other aspect.

Could you please list, if possible, the steps you went through that resulted in this? It would be great to try to reproduce it.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it so far. Seems to be a very rare problem, perhaps even caused by my PC. Can't see how, though. I tried to remember exactly what I did and that's what happened IIRC :

1. Start new game normally
2. Regenerate map a few times
3. Play
4. Decided to load back a few turns, because I make a mistake
5. Use load without quitting to Main Menu
6. Three Autosaves as usual are avaible, I pick the latest
7. Games get stucks on Initializing. That happens to me sometimes when I try to load without quitting to Main Menu
8. I kill the game
9. Restart game and try to load. Only one savegame there, with issue described above.

By now I have had all 1-8 steps happen to me again, but the 9 didn't happen again. So it's likely I missed something. I'd say ignore it for now, until it happens to someone else.
