I was under the impression, that you can build forts on top of resources. In the screenshot, Im sick and tired of having the pigs pillaged, but look at the mouseover......

You can. It destroys the pasture, but you keep access to the pigs. Nothing to worry about.

So you saying that if I build a fort there, I don't get the +3 food from the pasture, but I keep the health benefit?

I thought the primary idea was that you could build a fort on them outside your territory.... or am I mistaken?

Yes you keep the health benefit. Forts in BtS connect resources unlike in Warlords/Vanilla. Still .. you won't get the extra food on the tile if you build a fort on it.

Thanks guys, need the food in this case, and with "no cheats" enabled couldn't afford to mess around in the middle of a war....

You are mistaken. Forts have to be inside your cultural borders to do most of their new tricks, such as connecting resources and acting like canals.

What happens if I build a fort on a resource currently outside of my borders (for example, somewhere in the tundra). Will that prevent the AI from building a city nearby? Or will it build the city and automatically destroy my fort (like Civ3 colonies)? Will it have to destroy my fort before establishing a city? I'm hoping forts can be used to "claim" territory and prevent the AI from settling in my backyard until I'm ready to build a real city.

I am sure that the AI will not in any way respect your fort.... it will place the city there, your fort will remain now within its cultural boundaries. If you have open borders, your troops wont be kicked out and if you arent paying attention, you wont notice it for a while!

Shame about them not working outside of territory :( I miss the old civ 3 colonies still! ;)
