View Full Version : Changing England Flag to Union Jack In BTS

I was wondering how to permanently amend England's flag to that of the UK in BTS? I know there have been posts on this for vanilla Civ IV but the instructions on them relate to XML files that are in the Civ IV folder, whereas BTS has new folders specifically for the expansion, but these don't contain any visible XML files to edit the flag code in.

I tried editing the XML files in the original Civ IV folder but they don't seem to effect BTS.

Can anyone help? I'm not a programmer so simple, layman's language would really be appreciated!

Firaxis should have sorted this from day one - England was a small, medieval country, never a world empire.

England was a small, medieval country, never a world empire.

Well, they did own most of France in medieval times and it was still England during the reign of Elisabeth I, one of the most powerful monarchs of the 16th century.

True, but since the Normans conquered England it'd be equally true that parts of France owned England and not the other way around.

Either way, I think that a Great Britain civ would be far better. I just wish it were easier to change flags and things! Whatever happened to the good old days when messing around with cosmetic changes in Civ was easy and supported by an editor instead of requiring XML programming skills?

Really.. You don't need "XML programming skills"

I just made my own Nazi Germany civ with hitler as leader and a new flag and such in less than 2 hours having never even touched modding civ before.

And besides, there is no such thing as XML programming.

It's true that it could be easier with an editor, but it would be alot less flexible and harder.

But adding a civ is really nothing more than some copy paste work.

Hi btha

You sound like you know what you're doing. Can you shed any light on my England/Union Jack problem in BTS?

Don't have the game on this computer, but there are a few options..

It could be as simple as replacing a file in the
Assets\Art\Interface\TeamColor\
folder (note that it could be either assets under vanilla civ, warlords or bts folder, not sure when england was addes)

If the file is not there, and if i'm not mistaken, for the base civs that came with vanilla civ it is indeed not there, you'll have to edit the appropriate (probably in vanilla) XML file located at:
Assets\XML\Art\CIV4ArtDefines_Civilization.xml

Somewhere there you will find
<CivilizationArtInfo>
<Type>ART_DEF_CIVILIZATION_ENGLAND</Type>
<Button>,Art/Interface/Buttons/Civilizations/England.dds,Art/Interface/Buttons/Civics_Civilizations_Religions_Atlas.dds,7,5</Button>
<Path>Art/Interface/TeamColor/FlagDECAL_StGeorgeCross.dds</Path>
<bWhiteFlag>0</bWhiteFlag>
</CivilizationArtInfo>

You'll have to create and save the button and flag files in the below folders, and then change the xml so that it points to the right direction..
below is how it could look:

<CivilizationArtInfo>
<Type>ART_DEF_CIVILIZATION_ENGLAND</Type>
<Button>,Art/Interface/Buttons/Civilizations/NaziFlag.dds</Button>
<Path>Art/Interface/TeamColor/NaziFlag.dds</Path>
<bWhiteFlag>1</bWhiteFlag>
</CivilizationArtInfo>

Personally I would find it a bit weird to play as an english civ with the Union Jack. Since the union jack is not and never has been the english flag. Unless you also mod the civ to be Great Britain etc.

Thanks btha, I'll try that.

I'll rename to Great Britain - I don't want to play as England at all. But the renaming is simple, it's the flag-changing that I'm trying to get the hang of.

Hi all.

I've sorted it. It actually IS pretty simple once you've got your head around where everything is and how it all links in.

I might even back everything up and have a proper play around, see what I can come up with!

Many thanks again!! :goodjob:

Okay, sorry for asking this here, but I'm new to these forums and WHAT THE HELL IS VANILLA CIV!? -.- You guys say it everywhere and I've found no mod or whatever called 'Vanilla' and it seems a rather silly name to give to anything related to civ ..

Vanilla means base.

i.e. civ before the expansions.

Is there a story related as to why this is called Vanilla? :P

^^I bet that has something to do with icecreams ( vanilla = basic flavour... :p )

Yes, look up "common sense"

:p

Looked it up, turns out from what I learned about common sense it'd be way more logical to call it 'civ' as you call it 'warlords' and 'bts' but hey :P

Ah well nevermind, thanks for the response, let's not rip this thread entirely.

I don't think it's a tremendous leap of logic to put vanilla and unflavoured/basic together.

Vanilla is a flavour like any other in my world, but then again it is small.

You're determined to make this difficult aren't you. :crazyeye:

I've got another question. The Union Jack in the regular game of BTS is now fine, but I tried doing the same for the Rhye's and Fall Scenario and it comes out sort of orange and weird.

I understand that Rhye has perhaps modified the "English" civ's colours here - anyone know how I can restore the old white colour of England so that the Union Jack graphic will look as it does in the normal, unmodded BTS game?

I'd like to know that, too. I don't understand why people change England's white to red in some scenarios.

It seems that you cannot change civ colours to anything you like, because that will mess up the flags. For instance, Japan's red and England's white. Change that, and the flags will be inverted.
