View Full Version : Workers, Auto or Man?

I always put all mine on auto, I've got them on auto when they're created, I mean if I was to build all stuff meself it would take ages o,O and to be honest, I always do quite well, sometimes they chop too much forest and doesn't save for the later woodchoppers huts (braindamage, what the hell are they called? o,O). But they always manage quite well, I always have all my citizens on automation aswel while playing, just switch to research optimization or whatnot when I need it specifically.

After reading through lots of this forum I started realizing maybe everyone doesn't play like this, what if I fail totally? I've played civ since the first ever Civilization game, perhaps it's time I learned to manage citizens and workers? But then again, it always works really well ... :crazyeye:

The better AI changes makes auto-citizen very useful, even auto build has it's uses for cities you just want to boom economicaly (They no longer spam units, auto build queue tries to build the citie's infrustructure). Workers I still don't trust, until everything I want done is done, then I'll usually let them auto build roads or whatever. When I want a specific GP I'll force that, or if I want something built quick I'll force the tiles to be worked for production, but other then that Blake's AI works fine, and usualy picks the optimum anyway. Has since the first itterations of better AI.

I usually start doing it all myself, and later on i turn on worker auto. But if I'm trying to maximise prod, wealth or something in a city I gotta do it myself.

When 99% of all improvements are made I put them on auto. Then I sometimes switch them to manual if I want to change a city (farms to watermills, chain irrigations, cottaging when switching to emancipation etc).

Man at first, then when resources are linked up, essential roads built, essential farms and cottages built I automate them, then when I discover railroad I take them back, railroad all the mines, sawmills etc, then re-automate them

I do it all myself. The AI doesn't know what I want. I only automate workers when I discover railroad, 'cause is too tiring build railroads trough all my large empire.

Never trust an AI ;)

I've found my empire runs much more efficiently when I specialize cities (thank you national wonders) with a production city, a military production city, a cultural city (never one I set out to do, inevitably turns out to be something I need if I'm not in a conquering mood), a science city, a tax city (these two used to be the same thing but now I need to found corps in a single hyperspecialized place) and a Great People city (eventually two when I can build a National Park but I'm not saving my National Epic for that late in the game, I plop it down on some mega-flood plains city and produce enough food to support 5-10 specialists).

The AI just doesn't do that effectively enough.

Generally do it myself, as I know my plans better than the AI does!

I do it all myself! When I use Caste System, for example, AI doesn't make other but Priest specialists! It's really annoying, considering that after one Great Prophet (I usually found only one religion), I'd like to have other Great People. This would be different if I'd have Angkor Wat, but AI usually gets it a couple decades before me.

P.S. How this linked to CivIV:BTS? Shouldn't this be in General Discussions?

usually automated, except for the start of the game, when I like to connect my resources and make improvements I think are important, first

Actually, Great Prophet specialists are very good IMO.

I do it myself. Then, when there is nothing left to do, I automate. :)

They're excellent as Super Specialists, but I often want to do more with my Great People (build Academies and Scotland Yards, for example).

This is what I do as well. I was so thrilled the first time I used "Build Trade Network" or whatever that automation option is. Manually railroading was about my least favorite part of the game.
