I put the cd in and start it up to try to install and it all goes well until it gets to the part where it says "there is a newer version of civ 4. Finding the latest new patch". It then stops and an error message comes up saying
"The patch failed to install. Aborting installation."
What do I do to get it to work?
thanks

i had the same thing.
what i had to do was to manually download the vanilla civ 4 1.74 patch from here and run that patch manually.
then i could do the install of BTS

"The setup has detected that version 1.09 of civ 4 is already installed. This setup is not compatible with this version. You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version."

Yaj! Solved it for me as well, thank you so much for the input kattana!
As for your last Q DRhodes, I'm sure a reinstall to Civ IV v.1.0 will work fine (i.e. with no previous patching as you have now to 1.09)

Can anyone confirm how many discs there are? I've moved a bunch of times and the only one I have is the one required to play, so I'm not sure how I can reinstall to get the expansion pack to work. Thoughts? Help? I don't want to have to shell out more $$ for something I already bought! Thank you!
