Has anyone played as Boudica yet? Lots of people were saying before the game came out was how she would be unstoppable with her trait combos. I am curious to see if she lived up to the hype.

View Full Version : Boudica the Bad? cairnsy44 Jul 26, 2007, 10:22 AM Has anyone played as Boudica yet? Lots of people were saying before the game came out was how she would be unstoppable with her trait combos. I am curious to see if she lived up to the hype. AlessioCerci Jul 26, 2007, 10:35 AM I assumed the same thing and, since we shared a continent, i decided to rush quickly before she could get going - then i would have a whole continent to myself However she had acccess to copper/horse in first 2 cities and a decent mixed military - chariots, archers axemen, so w/o catapults, conquest was far too costly. I quitted the game later when Pacal turned up with caravels while i was still teching metal casting. Joeexplorer Jul 26, 2007, 08:51 PM I've been playing "Bo" since I got the game on Tuesday. I got this stuck in my head to get a good showing (score) with one leader before I try another. I'll be trying new leaders in order (of course). A bit too anal I know. But one thing that surprised the heck out of me with "Bo" is that the Gallic Warrior (My personal favorite since Civ III) gets her butt kicked way to easily by axeman. Hence why I had to start over just about every day this week. I like to build up on my war specialist for whom ever I'm playing, i.e. Gallic Warrior this time. I had about 18 Gallic Warriors and set out to take care of the bottom of the heap which was my neighbour Japan. After razing one city my invasion became a marathon campaign. I was hoping to hit at least 3 or 4 cities before my reinforcement had to come up. I just got done playing again. This time I used a mixed stack of Gallic Warrior, Axeman, Spearman, and a few Long Bowmen. I'm sorry to say, after about 18 total units I had basically the same results. My guess is, (Moral of the Story) Build lots more units than I did before, before I attack even a weak opponent. Bast Jul 26, 2007, 09:06 PM She's tough and she will declare war on you. I used the AP to declare Holy War on her with about 5 others and she became a vassal of someone else. PimpyMicPimp Jul 26, 2007, 09:10 PM I've given her a whirl. Producing level five units right out of the gate can be fun :D Huxley Hobbes Jul 26, 2007, 09:14 PM Boudica of Rome is... obscene. PimpyMicPimp Jul 26, 2007, 09:15 PM Boudica of Rome is... obscene. That is what my next game is probably going to be  robcheng Jul 26, 2007, 09:16 PM I've given her a whirl. Producing level five units right out of the gate can be fun :D So can 50% withdrawal with guerilla III gallics and longbows! ;) InFlux5 Jul 26, 2007, 09:17 PM (Re: the first couple of replies) Sorry if I sound condescending, but isn't it obvious just by looking at the unit description that the Gallic Warrior is a horrible UU? The bonus means nothing. The Swordsman, which it replaces, is an offensive unit to begin with, so even if the Gallic ends up defending on a hill, thus making use of its bonus, chances are you didn't want the Gallic to defend. Anyway, I have certainly noticed that the AI is using mixed stacks a lot more. I think this is the root of your problems. Before BtS, melee units were king because the AI seemed to only build Archers and Spearmen. But now, the AI spams Axemen itself, meaning it can counter Axes/Swords much better. In the end, this means you just plain need more units. When the defender's stack is more mixed, it means there will always be a perfect counter to your attacker. The only way to overcome this is with numbers. Spearthrower Jul 26, 2007, 09:24 PM InFlux5 - they definitely have their uses, albeit a specialised one. Highlands maps, the Gallic Warriors make a strong showing. Drawmeus Jul 26, 2007, 09:34 PM And don't forget they unlinked leaders from civs in multi. Bandobras Took Jul 26, 2007, 09:35 PM I'm a casual player, but using a mix of axes and swords I rolled right over Tokugawa and his archers on hills behind walls. The thing is, if you run out of places to conquer, she's not got much going for her. By the time I could mount an overseas assault, Charlemagne was a little too firmly entrenched and had built the @#$##@@!! Statue of Zeus. :) The Lance Jul 27, 2007, 01:12 AM In my only run in with her she seemed too aggressive. She started two wars she had no hope of winning (one with me), and was promptly crushed both times. Goombaz Jul 27, 2007, 02:07 AM In my only run in with her she seemed too aggressive. She started two wars she had no hope of winning (one with me), and was promptly crushed both times. Not to mock the long dead, but that seems eerily historical doesn't it? The Dragon Jul 27, 2007, 02:09 AM Boudica has good traits, Celtia, not so much. Unlink leaders on the custom menu and pick a civ with a good UU/UB combo and you'll be happier. PimpyMicPimp Jul 27, 2007, 02:53 AM So can 50% withdrawal with guerilla III gallics and longbows! ;) I forgot about that! Ooooohhh, I'm going to have to play her again and have some Withdrawl madness! meatwad4289 Jul 27, 2007, 03:51 AM if u play Civ u cant be a casual player lol its all or nothing. Anyway, Ive been playing in my current game and I'll say this, she's nice. Ofocurse I've built up a very long standing relationship with her. However she does scare me. See. She expanded Quickly, aand out of no where she burst out enough units to where if i went to war with her my bordering cities would be gone instantly. Her navy is roughly the size of my own now, my own fault pesterign people with Privateers lol. She does declare war on people she does not like. She had a war with Julius Caesar, and she was pleased with im the turn before. But he also switched religions, and started trading with babylon. If it weren't for the fact that im better than her She'd kick my arse lol. well she has musket men and i have infantry thanks to mass spy production destroying her civilizations ability to do. Btu overall... She isn't that unstoppable but she is a worthy foe. Bluewolf Jul 27, 2007, 04:05 AM Try being enclosed between her and Catherine, those two chicks just don't like peace... somehow i survived a 2 front war... Agent Cooper Jul 27, 2007, 04:16 AM Playing a Boudica game right now (read Futurehermit's thread) and she's kicking ass sofar. Stack her UU with chariots and spears and the enemy cities will drop like dominos. Her traits are just awesome. :) How well I will do when longbows etc. enter the game is an entirely different story though, but right now she's a monster warmonger. futurehermit Jul 27, 2007, 06:45 AM I haven't played as her yet, but I played vs. her one game. I was in a protracted war with Sulavaraman or whatever his name is (do we have an abbreviation for him yet?!) and was getting worn down in troops when Boudica the opportunist declared on me! That was pretty much game over for me because I couldn't handle her large...stacks at that point :D Bursk Jul 27, 2007, 07:40 AM I changed my xml file so that the Gallic Warrior has + 10% vs. melee (I also did the same with the Jaguar). It makes the unit a little better for when you come across the occasional axeman or swordsman defending an enemy city. Bandobras Took Jul 27, 2007, 08:39 AM if u play Civ u cant be a casual player lol its all or nothing. Or some level in between. :) For example, where does someone who doesn't use the Slavery Civic because they don't approve of slavery lie? They're playing the game, so they can't be "nothing," but they aren't using every possible means to win, so they're not at "all." Anyway, with the addition of Espionage, I've found I have more to fear from Civs that are capable of producing high espionage levels than Civs capable of producing powerful troops. Mansa's destroyed me more thoroughly than, say, Tokugawa. TheLastOne36 Jul 27, 2007, 08:41 AM Anyone tried Boudica of the Romans yet? Historically Ironic and gamewise overpowered. trafficlight Jul 27, 2007, 08:50 AM I was in a protracted war with Sulavaraman or whatever his name is (do we have an abbreviation for him yet?!):D I suggest we call him "Jaundice". Anyway, I played a game yesterday as Boudica of Rome. Unstoppable praetorians. It was awesome. They came out of the gate with Combat 3 and maybe a City Raider or two. You can not escape. jackdog Jul 27, 2007, 09:05 AM I am boudica 1st game and doing well b ut only on Noble on a very large continent and yes the UU sucks basically and it was only the traits that attracted me. The question is, is it basicaly cheating to play boudica of rome or somesuch awsome combo....what do people think, or is this just mnaking the most of what the game rules allow. Lord Olleus Jul 27, 2007, 09:30 AM its your game, do what you want. However, I some how doupt that anyone will let you use that convo in multiplayer... Lance of Llanwy Jul 27, 2007, 09:35 AM I haven't played as her yet, but I played vs. her one game. I was in a protracted war with Sulavaraman or whatever his name is (do we have an abbreviation for him yet?!) and was getting worn down in troops when Boudica the opportunist declared on me! That was pretty much game over for me because I couldn't handle her large...stacks at that point :D I just abbreviated it to "Sui". I know a little Chinese and a little Japanese, but whatever language his name is in is pretty brutal. My poor western tongue is no match:lol: Drawmeus Jul 27, 2007, 09:45 AM its your game, do what you want. However, I some how doupt that anyone will let you use that convo in multiplayer... Actually, fair bet that they WILL let that happen, since it's just a base part of the multiplayer rules now. Incidentally, someone remind me what traits boudica has? I didn't really check. And what's the Unique Unit for the celts? I never played them ^_^ Ashbery76 Jul 27, 2007, 09:55 AM She is top in the game I am playing atm. trafficlight Jul 27, 2007, 09:57 AM Boudica is Aggressive and Charismatic. Those early units can be upgraded very quickly. Goombaz Jul 27, 2007, 10:00 AM Actually, fair bet that they WILL let that happen, since it's just a base part of the multiplayer rules now. Incidentally, someone remind me what traits boudica has? I didn't really check. And what's the Unique Unit for the celts? I never played them ^_^ Oh no no no... some of the combos are straight raw unfiltered chunky . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. I for one will *never* be suckered into playing MP with any leader/any civ. Cheeze that comes to my mind(admittedly not the *best* player ever) Boudica of Rome = Praetorians of Doom Hammurabi of Sumeria= Upgraded Vultures and :eek:Half-Off Zig:eek: Darius of HRE= Financial and Organized with Rathaus Churchill of Native America= Sadistic Synergy with Totem Poles Etc... cairnsy44 Jul 27, 2007, 11:47 AM Try being enclosed between her and Catherine, those two chicks just don't like peace... somehow i survived a 2 front war... yeah, I have found that Catherine is much angrier than before. What is up with her? LOL.... arbarbonif Jul 27, 2007, 12:32 PM I tried Boudica a few times. All three times I started with isolated, metal-less tundra starts and quit because I wanted to kick some butt with her. I start one game with Willem the Orange and multiple sea resources with iron, copper and horses nearby (And Isabella, a easily manipulated neighbor with no metal herself next door and cut off from half the continent)... Guess I'll just get a quick space victory and then get back to Boudilicious... Chief Stubbs Jul 27, 2007, 12:40 PM Guess I'll just get a quick space victory and then get back to Boudilicious... Am I the only one who finds all the "fawning" over a ruler in a game that is meant to portray a 50-year-old woman a little.......creepy? arbarbonif Jul 27, 2007, 12:44 PM Am I the only one who finds all the "fawning" over a ruler in a game that is meant to prtray a 50-year-old woman a little.......creepy? She's a pretty attractive older woman, actually. I was more referring to her traits tho. I need someone to replace my affection for the Ghengis Khan Keshik Rush, cause he is really not my type... :p sw99 Jul 27, 2007, 12:58 PM Boudica is Aggressive and Charismatic. Those early units can be upgraded very quickly. I think everyone had guessed that by now. And as goombaz has already said, just because it's in the game, doesn't mean you'll find a multiplayer game that lets you be boudicca of rome or any other overpowered setting. I think darius of persia will also be at risk of being banned too. (i like the option of powerful civs for single player but I think he's a bit too much for multiplayer) BYC Jul 27, 2007, 01:19 PM Try being enclosed between her and Catherine, those two chicks just don't like peace... somehow i survived a 2 front war... So you survived their gangbang? lolz sw99 Jul 27, 2007, 01:32 PM That's hot [/paris hilton] |
