View Full Version : Plantations are now OFFICIALLY useless!

Just got the game and read everything about corporations. One thing that struck me is the abundance of corporations that use mining resources whereas no corporations use the plantation resources besides surgar. I was building plantations on my silk, incense, and dye for the first time instead of cottaging hoping to use the excess for corporations. Now I have to go back to cottaging over them again. Sigh... Whoever designed the corporation system should at least incorporate all of the resources instead using the same ones over and over again.

I had 10 dye in a game once and went to look at what corporation I could use with it. I was also disappointed to find that the 10 dye was worthless for the corporations.

you dont want more resources for corporations, it makes them cost more at a stagnant output over time.

Could you not use the excess resources to trade for the corporation-relevant resources and effectively create a monopoly?

Not what you had in mind, but it does create a use for them.

ADD: If you do this, you can spread your corporation to them and they would recieve little to no benefit, increased maintenance costs and you get to pocket the gold.

this is actually exactly what you should do, but you have to remember that more resources costs you more money multiplied by inflation, and that the AI should not, SHOULD NOT, be trading away resources it needs for its own corps, or needs for health and happiness bonuses without a fair trade.

the AI should also pursue these same strategies against you too, but from what I can tell it doesn't

I don't build plantations often, most of the times I have semi-idle workers which build forts on plantation-tiles, before calendar :)

A fast food corporation might have been amusing. It could use all of the livestock resources, plus wheat (for buns), spices and sugar (for soft drinks).

Firaxis wanted 7 corporations to match the 7 religions. Thatīs why not all resources are being used, I suppose...

Perhaps, but fast food is one of the most recognizable kinds of corporations. I would have chose it over sushi, myself, but that's a minor quibble.

Well solutions for this
1. Plantations give +2 Commerce with Medicine
OR
2. Hospitals act like a Corporation Office (~+0.5 Research per Plantation resource, besides Fruit+Sugar but not with Maintenance)

(Side note: Preserves should be buildable on Ivory+Fur (so once they Obsolete you can get something for them))

You would think you could get at least some sweatshop labor out of dye to make clothing with.

We could call it Burger Emperor (or even Burger Deity) or McSid's

They could make a lot of money, but your citizens get unhappiness because of outsourcing and child labor.

Forget Medicine. Plantations should give +2 Commerce with Slavery.

I gave Plantations and Mines extra commerce with Mercantilism. Mercantilist nations based their economy on controlling luxury consumer goods and precious metals.

I also changed the corporations, adding the Fashion Emporium (consuming Silk, Dyes and Sheep, producing Furs (which don't go obsolete)) and the GlobalGrocer (consuming most kinds of food resources).

In fairness I don't think the Civ designers had this in mind but growers in the developing and third world can't sell their agricultural goods, because of first world common agricultural policies. So it sort of makes sense, Would make more sense if you could grow cocaine and opium instead.

I thought Slavery was supposed to be BAD though!

(Or rather, "Use this only in the early game if you have a city with an obscene amount of food available but little production")

Agreed, would be nice if there was a textile corporation that uses Dye/Silk/Sheep/Furs

I actually think they should have created 7 pairs of corporations. Each pair would consume the same resources, but would compete with each other.

This would also allow enough corps to consume almost all resources, and would create an international competition.

wow thanks for spoiling my first game.

Actually the plantations are still good barter for peace to make-up for religious differences.

Having just played some Capitalism 2, I agree, every resource should mate with a corporation, at least by the end of the tech tree.

the food plantations of course are good.

the commerce ones are good $$ early as cottages take time to mature.

trading plantation resources is still good.

but yes putting cottages on them is often a good idea at some point and it does suck that they don't play into corporations.

there should be a silk-screening corporation: silk + dye  or better yet an "alternative" corporation that sells tye-dye silk shirts and incense

i like the idea of a fast-food one though, that's a really cool idea imho.

Firaxis Foods is a good name for a fast food empire.

I personally am in favor of corporations and religions being available thoughout the game instead of corps at the end and religions at the beginning. There should be weaker versions of both earlier and more powerful counterparts later, so that the player can choose the long-term low benefit or wait to get the better bonus for the shorter period.

You already get Happiness from most plantation resources, and usually good yields.

Food resources where the least useful in Vanilla/Warlords, so it's nice that it's mostly food resources that are used in Corporations.

A fast food corporation might have been amusing. It could use all of the livestock resources, plus wheat (for buns), spices and sugar (for soft drinks).

Soft drinks are mostly sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, so it could substitute corn for sugar.

Food resources where the least useful in Vanilla/Warlords

Really? I always love seeing them near my cities, so I can work high hammer tiles or run specialists.

Yield wise they are among the best yes, but I meant the Health bonus vs Happiness versus strategic value.
