So who do you want to win?
|
View Full Version : FIFA World Cup 2002 JoeM May 30, 2002, 06:35 AM So who do you want to win? JoeM May 30, 2002, 06:41 AM Woohoo! England 100% already ! ;) Sorry I couldn't include all the teams. the poll is who you want to win, not who you think will win.... sysyphus May 30, 2002, 06:42 AM Well, I'm half English and half German. I'd support both, but since I don't want to see Traitor-Boy Hargreaves win anything, I'll just back Germany. Baleog May 30, 2002, 06:43 AM Obviously I want Ireland to win, not going to happen now. JoeM May 30, 2002, 06:49 AM Originally posted by Baleog Obviously I want Ireland to win, not going to happen now. Yes I haven't followed the news, but it sounds like a major handbag duel has been going on. animepornstar May 30, 2002, 06:54 AM argentina. just look at the their weakest part, the defense line and the goalie. pochettino - ayala - samuel and burgos, only italy and france can compete with it. JoeM May 30, 2002, 07:01 AM by who is in the final. Myself I'm betting on Portugal (form has boomed recently) and Brazil (Sleeping Giants). Given the odds stacked against England - just look at our group - it'll be the mother of all Finals if we get there: If we come second out of the group who do we play (likely)? France. If we beat the no.1's in the world who do we play (likely)? Brazil. If we beat the no.2's in the world who do we play (likely)? Argentina (again!). ...I rest my case Hitro May 30, 2002, 07:04 AM Though I want Germany to win, I think Argentina most likely will. I agree with animepornstar that France and Italy are their main opponents (btw, why's Italy not in the poll but Costa Rica?). Maybe also Portugal and Brazil. Suprises could be Cameroon or England. JoeM May 30, 2002, 07:36 AM It get a bit Euro-centric, but basically I forgot Italy  Does anyone know where Senegal is? Haven't checked google yet... ;) Mikoyan May 30, 2002, 07:39 AM SWEDEN!!!! Wooooh!! They HAVE to win, or else!! :D JoeM May 30, 2002, 07:43 AM Originally posted by Mikoyan SWEDEN!!!! Wooooh!! They HAVE to win, or else!! :D We'll see about that on Sunday! :p Kennelly May 30, 2002, 07:57 AM Of course I want Germany to win but I think Argentina or Italy will make it. Senegal is in West Africa, just south of Mauretania :D Matrix May 30, 2002, 08:03 AM Well, after the Netherlands I'd support Scandinavian countries. And between Sweden and Denmark I prefer Denmark. But it's not a big preference of mine. I Sweden, Ireland and But I don't want Brazil and Germany to win. Brazil won too much already and Germany is Holland's eternal enemy. :p JoeM May 30, 2002, 08:23 AM I was in Holland a couple of days ago and the mood is a little sombre about the world cup. A cab driver told he was glad that due to the times he could watch most of it as highlights...He offered some of the Dutch players to bolster our midfield - how generous! philippe May 30, 2002, 08:31 AM well i HOPE that belgium shall win but they just suck......:( i think japan shall defeat belgium i think france will be champion Suppersalmon May 30, 2002, 08:36 AM England all the way JoeM May 30, 2002, 08:50 AM Originally posted by Suppersalmon England all the way Perhaps you should vote for them too? Suppersalmon May 30, 2002, 08:52 AM I just have Mr Spice May 30, 2002, 08:58 AM It would be cool if Sweden won, but not even God can make such miracles happen. So I settle for Argentina, they play in an entertaining way and it would be fun if they won. :) Baleog May 30, 2002, 09:15 AM Yeah outside Ireland I'd like Argentina to win for the no.1 reason that the Argentinian people have gone through a lot of bad sh!t in the last year or so. They deserve something nice. De Lorimier May 30, 2002, 09:32 AM I'm from Québec so not a lot of people around me cares for the football (not soccer damnit!) and since Canada's team sucks and is full of english-speaking guys I vote for France. I'm not jumping on the band-wagon or anything, since I'm a french descendant I always support the french in international events that don't involve any Québécois. Allez les Bleus! Allez les Bleus! Dell19 May 30, 2002, 11:01 AM Well if its who I want to win, then its England :) ComradeDavo May 30, 2002, 11:04 AM ENGLAND!!!!!!! as for who I think will win, well i got a feeling that Spain might just do it this year, or maybe sweeden. I don't rate Englands chances very highly:( And it was a shame about Roy Keane, but I still think Ireland will do well without him. MrPresident May 30, 2002, 03:29 PM Obviously England followed closely by Ireland. BlueMonday May 30, 2002, 04:05 PM Brazil is gonna mop the floor with all you punkasses. sysyphus May 30, 2002, 04:07 PM Originally posted by Baleog Yeah outside Ireland I'd like Argentina to win for the no.1 reason that the Argentinian people have gone through a lot of bad sh!t in the last year or so. They deserve something nice. Absolutely, I just returned from spending two months there. The mood has been very down. They had their fete national just before I left and there was no sign of celebration or any patriotism. Still, as WC time approaches, they are now starting to get excited, it seems to be the only inspiring thing they have. After watching two months of Argy footy, it's quite exciting. Watching River Plate win the championship was a cool game to watch. I do hope they do well. Hopefully they'll injure Owen Hargreaves and teach the little turncoat a lesson. JoeM May 31, 2002, 01:36 AM I was there last year before things started getting really bad, and Buenos Aires is a great city. I had a great time there and I'm sad to see the state of their economy. :( ...But if I see Batistuta's grinning face as they send off an England player and get penalties after rolling around on the floor giving Oscar-level performances...? I say we invade. ;) They do the best steak ever. Mmm...Steak. Had one last week, mmm... England or Brazil for the cup. Baleog May 31, 2002, 08:20 AM Why do people keep saying Brazil will win it (it's different if you want them to win it), they have very little stability in their side. They used 63 different players during the qualifying stages:eek:. And Ronaldo only recently scored his first goal in yellow for 3 years! Globber May 31, 2002, 08:39 AM Forza Espana!!! Maybe they can finally break the streak.... but its doubtful.... :( JoeM May 31, 2002, 08:45 AM Well you've got to look past the stats and look at Brazil as a force of nature ;) The Brazilians (footballers) have a history of lazing around and then turning on the form when it's needed. True they don't have Romario playing to the dissappointment of the nation, but look at the line up: Rivaldo Ronaldo Silva Carlos Ronaldinho...etc. Come on, they're up for it and they love football even more than the English. Right now they've got flags on every street - even the roads themselves are painted with the colours all over Sao Paulo and Rio. I can practically hear the chanting 'Brasil! Brasil!' across the Atlantic! JoeM May 31, 2002, 09:01 AM Heh, heh. 1-0 to Senegal, hah hah haa. :p  calgacus May 31, 2002, 09:33 AM France or Sweden Sullla May 31, 2002, 11:39 AM Whoa, not many Americans on this thread! ;) I love watching footbal (the real kind, not the American kind) but here in the US the only time it's ever televised is during the World Cup. So I woke up at 7:30am this morning so I could watch the first game between France and Senegal, and it was well worth it (I feel sorry for anyone from France today! :p). I'm not sure if I'm going to watch the USA's 5:00am match next week, but we'll see. I'm certainly not going to watch taped coverage of a match in primetime the next night; hopefully the time thing isn't as big a deal for those of you in Europe. And if I had to pick, I think Italy's going to win. ceseu May 31, 2002, 03:04 PM Oh no! Peru not play the cup!!! Soon, in Germany World Cup, we back after 20 years. In this Cup i support to Portugal, Argentina or Spain. academia May 31, 2002, 08:47 PM ARGENTINA ARGENTINA ARGENTINA DaSilva May 31, 2002, 09:16 PM Historically no team from Europe has won outside Europe so excluding all of those I can only see Argentina winning the World Cup this year. France are quality. Scotland arent the best opponents but the way the took us apart in the 5-0 hammering was simply a joy to watch. Every goal was beautiful. England wont even make it out of their group. Wonder what the odds on them not getting any points is. Maybe I could make some money here. South Korea may surprise a lot of people especially with the results they have had in their warm-up games. Hiddink seems to have a very technical team together playing with a club side attitude. Still I cant see past Argentina this year even though they have included 56 year old Claudia Canniggia in their squad! Fayadi Jun 01, 2002, 03:06 AM Of course I will support China but my favourite soccer team in Europe is Italy.I think Italy will be the champion. The last time France win them in Euro 2000 is all luck! NONO I dont want Frenchies to win!NO!! MrNapoleon Jun 01, 2002, 03:20 AM Well, GERMANY isnt that strong this tournament, but we will see, maybe we will give you all a big big SURPRISE ! Isnt a SOCCER WM great without those folks in this orange dresses ? ORANJE BENEDEN !!!! :D Nap Fayadi Jun 01, 2002, 03:27 AM Germany can win if the manager or somebody else bribe all the other team players to play terribly like France did to Brazil in the final.Germany is the richest country in Europe ,as long as Gerard Schroder is willing to help his countrymen's team by "donating some money" .  JoeM Jun 01, 2002, 04:02 AM Well looks like my choice inclusion was worth it, anyone changing their vote? :) One question: Everyone knows that the Senegalese players all play in France, and that Thierry Henry at least was born in Senegal. My question is, can he switch sides now the Cup has begun...?   Hagbart Jun 01, 2002, 05:15 AM You left out Denmark :) Update: Uruguay 1 - 2 Denmark, woohoo Denmark is leading group A. Henrique Jun 01, 2002, 05:34 AM Come on, they're up for it and they love football even more than the English. Right now they've got flags on every street - even the roads themselves are painted with the colours all over Sao Paulo and Rio. True. :) Dexter Jun 02, 2002, 04:17 PM I personally hope Japan wins it or Ireland:goodjob: But as for who I think will actually win, I'm going for Brazil or Argentina. Brazil may not be up to form but they'll wake-up and finally reveal their true greatness. Ronaldo had so much pressure on him last tournament and maybe this time he will finally get to show his full potential without the media hanging over him like a dog. Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 04:33 PM Oh my God, was it you Dexter who gave Ireland their second vote? I waited but it never came. Myartar Jun 03, 2002, 02:28 AM The US time has come in football(soccer). It'll be tough playing in Group D w/ Korea, Portugal and Poland(a sleeping giant, mark my words....). As far as Brazil goes, I'm watching them play Turkey right now, and they're not playing like Brazil at all..... They're playing more like thugs and not like the traditional, finesse teams of Brazilian past. Now that Ramario is a page in Brazilian team history, Ronaldo is really the only true finesse player they seem to have left. Point is, unless Brazil finds that traditional Brazilian soccer, they won't make it past the round of 16. And here's a question to anyone who follows the Mexican Aztecas, what are the chances of Jorge Campos getting some playing time? Especially up at forward, maybe mid. My only fear if the US does win or even advances, is it being made Political like everything else that involves the US in the last 9 months. JoeM Jun 03, 2002, 06:12 PM I have to disagree with your comments there Myartar, although the game turned in to a downright circus (What planet was the Ref on?) in the last five minutes Brazil were contantly threatening Turkey throughout the game. I think we've seen them start to pick up the game for the first time since the last world cup, they'll easily burn through they're group (I mean, China?) it's how they perform against the likes of Italy and Argentina that I'm looking forward to. KaeptnOvi Jun 04, 2002, 01:44 AM I don't know why, and I don't know anything about football, but my favorite is Spain ForbiddenPalace Jun 04, 2002, 11:28 AM Brazil. Their front power cannot be stopped. JoeM Jun 05, 2002, 09:31 AM I've heard many people say that this site is dominated by US citizens, so how come England are topping the chart? Surely they must start flag-waving sooner or later, especially as they beat one of my favourites for the Cup. I still think England can make it out of the Group Of Death but only if the pull their effing socks up! Sodak Jun 05, 2002, 10:46 AM I'd love to see Senegal win it all. This, of course, will simply not happen, but would be very cool. I like those surprize outcomes! Three cheers for Senegal Korea Japan As for realistic chances, I would like to see Portugal win. Alas, it is a dark day when your team falls to the US! O well, Spain, then... :king: Godinex Jun 05, 2002, 11:15 AM Costa Rica!
