Wait a second...

How the hell are you going to keep religion out of a Mythology mod? :hmm:

Stormrage
Aug 10, 2007, 04:57 AM
 I was wondering the same..

I guess we are limiting the religions to pre-christianity, and scrapping judaism... just avoiding the whole Holy Land area in a wide circle ;)

Why not have Christianity in there too? There are Angel units available.

Right.. I just can`t think of God Allmighty taking a punch from Zeus.. This should be oriented on the period when other gods were aknowledged..

Before it all went downhill.. "What do you mean, your god? No other god exists.."

I'd rather not get into an off-topic discussion regarding the validity of ancient Religions versus Christianity(of which I'm a part of). So keep religion out here. If I were to rename the mod idea legends and myths than that would be different.

Well at any rate, other religions had Angel-like beings anywho, so those can still be used.

I'm up for making some stuff for this scenario when my comp starts working again. I have a few angel units in progress (archer animations are SO hard!) so, if you had an angel civ, you could easily fill it out..

Im all up for including legends in the mod as well, maybe even including dinosaur units for a civ like Lumeria or Mu(legendary civs based on victorian made up stuff)

No religion definitly should not be in here if they have any decent amount of folowers.

Umm. I think if we dismiss their believes they might reinitiate the fair play act and then things can get messy.

Why? There's religion in civ already, atleast Civ4.

I just really don't see the problem. Should people get more offended over this mod than any other civ game/mod that includes religion? If so, why?

This mod is about mythology, that is stories that did not happen not religion, beliefs which may exist and may have happened.

Not if we are saying their religion is mythological.

Or this could be a Polytheistic Mythology Mod Project and be done with the discussion. :p

By that definition, wouldn't you, as a Christian, consider Christianity the only religion?

Fine by me, there are angels in Judaism and Islam too. :p

Er - I think you'll find that religions revolve heavily around stories. Just read the Bible - it's mostly narrative. There is a difference between mythology and religion, but the difference is not that they are two completely different things, but that mythology is part of religion. For example, the stories about the gods found in Homer and Hesiod formed part of the traditional Greek religion, just as the stories found in the Bible about the patriarchs or the apostles form part of the Christian religion. Every time you recite the Nicene Creed in church you are defining your religion narratologically. To describe such stories as "mythology", by the way, is simply to say something about how they function within a society, not to say they are false. "Mythology" is not necessarily false (CS Lewis understood this when he said that the only real difference between the Christian myths and pagan myths was that the former happen to be true).

In other words, by all means limit the mod to some myths - although you should be aware that there are plenty of people today who believe in the ancient germanic or Mediterranean ones you allude to in the thread, so if claim that these ones are "untrue" you'll still offend them. But it doesn't make sense to delineate between myths on the one hand and religion on the other.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say is that dwarves are Germanic too. Just think of the Nibelungenlied.
