There are lots of modern (post 1900) technologies in Civ 4, but none represents the social sciences (except maybe Mass Media or Ecology), though there has been plenty of fruitful research in sociology, psychology, political science and other social sciences.
I would like them to represent social sciences with at least one technology.
But what should I name it, and what buildings, units or actions should require it?

Good point. I'd say:
Psychology: increase in happiness, and probably – ("mental") health also.
History. Together with Psychology allows national wonder "propaganda center" (maybe there could be a better name) which gives Morale promotion to every unit built in that city (+1 move) and -25% war weariness or so. Also increases happiness from ancient wonders, e.g. Pyramids, Hanging Gardens etc. :) How's that?
Sociology could unlock new events or new solutions to old events (if that's possible, I'm not that familiar with event moding).
(OK history is not a 20th century invention, E. Gibbon is from 18'th anyway, but inaccuracies like that are quite common in CivIV. E.g. military science could be dated back to Roman Republic or even earlier).

So far, I have created a Sociology tech in my house mod. It requires Medicine and Democracy, allows the Intelligence Agency, Cristo Redentor and the Environmentalism civic, and leads to Ecology with Industrialism.

History giving happiness from ancient wonders is a brilliant idea.
