MrPresident Jun 01, 2002, 10:21 AM 199 countries can't be wrong Cunobelin Of Hippo Jun 01, 2002, 11:06 AM Where I come from, we call baseball, not football, 'Yankeeball' :p Now THERE's a truly awful sport! t92300 Jun 02, 2002, 03:36 AM did I miss some thing or is there only 2 choices jiml_63 Jun 02, 2002, 05:26 AM I must have bumped my head....I went to sleep last night and there was a plethora of sports in the world. I wake up this morning to find there are only two left. Have the rest of them been outlawed???? That being said, I must admit that the question asks for the most popular and not my favorite so I guess it would have to be soccer. BTW, MrPresident, those same 199 countries play a lot of different sports as witnessed in the Olympics. Greadius Jun 02, 2002, 05:27 AM Greatest sport to watch? To play? To follow? Worldwide? Too many questions... and not enough basketball :D Flatlander Fox Jun 02, 2002, 07:55 AM Since you seem to be poking fun at Football, and dutifully trying to make up for Soccer's lack of action, fun and drama, I think it is best to remind you that basketball is MUCH more popular around the world than football (Not soccer, FOOTBALL) But soccer is truly the World's game. Since we invented baseball, I would consider that to be Yankeeball, not Football. But you should still attempt to make a fairer poll.:whipped: bobgote Jun 02, 2002, 08:02 AM Didn't you also invent basketball, and your American football. I don't like either of these, or baseball neither. If I may, I'd like to ask why in American football is there a)Tights? b) Body Armour? c)Helmets? d) Shoulder pads like some bizarro power woman executive suit? e)referees with microphones. Sometimes I watch it for pure novelty value :) Also, I don't think the poll is fair cos American Football is only played in America. i like soccer anyway, so I voted for it, but had either Aussie Rules Football or Cricket been on the poll, i woulda voted for them first. Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 04:27 PM Originally posted by MrPresident 199 countries can't be wrong Well of course they may have been Commies, so they don't count.:D Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 04:34 PM Originally posted by Flatlander Fox Soccer's lack of action, fun and drama Clearly you've never tried to watch FOOTBALL. Although seeing as yankieball isn't televised in this country (during reasonable hours) it is fair to say I've never given it a chance. But I imagine the constant commercial breakages would get in my way. Flatlander Fox Jun 02, 2002, 04:56 PM I watched quite a few WC98 games. Boring. I have been to 2 Bundesliga games. (The party was nice, but it was boring.) I attempted to give soccer a chance. But it's boring. While the commercials in Football and Basketball make it difficult to watch, they are no worse then the stoppages for the wussy soccer players falling on the ground and screeching like 10 year old girls. Then you have to wait while they complain that they were tripped. Or while they complain that someone didn't see the other sissy soccer player grab him. Or while they straighten out their uniform. The only good thing about soccer is the party afterwards. But here in America, we don't hold parties after soccer games.:) Smash Jun 02, 2002, 04:57 PM The most played sport in the world is Basketball beleive it or not.Followed closely by soccer. btw-Basketball was invented by a Canadian philippe Jun 02, 2002, 05:05 PM FOOTBALL! anyway wich matches you saw in wk98? you never saw belgium vs holland?5-5 it was a legendary match Flatlander Fox Jun 02, 2002, 05:19 PM Smash, I don't believe it...I'll have to look it up. Nesmith was a Canuck?:) Phillipe, I watched all the German games, many of the Croat games too... Me being a sport lover, I really tried to get into it. But since it sucked I couldn't.;) Maybe we figured out the root of the word soccer now huh?:D Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 05:28 PM Football is so enjoyed because so much people play it themselves. It is one of the few sports that can be played ANYWHERE with just one item. Hence it's popularity in the big wide world. Speaking of someone who likes rugby, it is a sport that you can't really have a proper mess around with some friends without proper organisation; it's drawback. I imagine the same for Aussie rules/American football/Baseball/Cricket. (athough you can for basketball). Because so much people play football worldwide (even if they're unfit bastards who just do so for the laugh, like me), without the organisation required to play other sports, a lot of people identify with it and hence love it. Smash Jun 02, 2002, 05:29 PM Dr. James Naismith was a Canadian who developed the game while working at a YMCA in Springfeild, Mass I enjoy soccer thouroughly despite my country's inability to play the game but I can see why in just doesn't fly in NA.We have too many other faster,"in your face" type sports. That is the main reason why basketball is the most played sport. It seems to have universal appeal, while soccer flounders miserably in NA. Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 05:30 PM That 5-5 game was in the qualifiers. andycapp Jun 02, 2002, 05:33 PM You should have had Australian Rules FOOTBALL as an option - it's worldwide game. :p :D If you were seriously interested in determing THE most popular game (as if) Cricket should have been included in the poll - 1 billion Indians can't be wrong! :p Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 05:37 PM Originally posted by andycapp If you were seriously interested in determing THE most popular game (as if) Cricket should have been included in the poll - 1 billion Indians can't be wrong! :p Yes cricket is popular in India, but by that logic, the entire populations of Europe, South America and propably Africa can't be wrong :p philippe Jun 02, 2002, 05:48 PM Originally posted by Baleog That 5-5 game was in the qualifiers. i think that counts too in the wk98:D Globber Jun 02, 2002, 06:56 PM Originally posted by Cunobelin Of Hippo Where I come from, we call baseball, not football, 'Yankeeball' :p Now THERE's a truly awful sport! Worse than cricket or curling??... I don't think so But then they broadcast fishing here in the US so..... Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 07:01 PM They actually broadcast fishing?!! Don't get me wrong it's great, but who in their right mind sits down to watch it?? Flatlander Fox Jun 02, 2002, 07:57 PM People who are too lazy to go fishing themselves... Not sure what the worst sport is, but it sure isn't baseball. I think curling probably is ranked up there in worst sports though... Baleog Jun 02, 2002, 08:36 PM This thread has gotten boring now. If there was an actual worst sport in the world, nobody would play it and therefore we'd have never heard of it. |
