View Full Version : What ever happened to these good old relics? Mainstay wonders of the past...

It seems like there are a ton of wonders in the early game, and less as and less as the game goes on. It seems like there should be wondes that go with Economics and techs of that era.

What about Adam Smith's Trading Company that could be build after you research Economics?

What about Copernicus' Observatory?

There aren't enough research or commerce wonders that give great scientist and great merchant points. I read somebody complaining in another thread about how building wonders makes too many great prophets... and it does.

What about Sun Tzu's War Academy?

What about Leonardo's Workshop, the best wonder ever (until Cristo Redonator)!

There aren't enough "military" wonders either. And military civics could be introduced also, but thats for another thread.

I also miss Darwin's voyage... but Magellans Expendition was nicely replacedby the circumnavigation of the globe. I also miss those "special units" from civ 3 that you didnt have to build. The early mounted one from the statue of Zeus and the Crusader.

Also, it seems like there are some leader traits that can be easilly replaced by building a wonder. Building the Hanging Gardens makes you Expansive without fast workers and faster buildings. Cristo Redonator makes you spiritual (but better). Stonehenge makes you creative, Colossus does a piss-poor job of making you financial...

Alright, I'll post my ideas for what these wonders should do... I'm sure if others brainstorm you'll improve on this though.

Adam Smith's Trading Company: -10% Corporation costs in all cities. +1 commerce to plots with roads in the host city. 1 Free settled Great Merchant in host city. Requires Economics.

Coperinus' Observatory +25% Science in host city. Science specialists +1 hammer and +1 beaker. Can turn 3 citizens into Scientist. (like ankor wat but for scientists). Requires Astronomy. Obsolete with Computers.

Sun Tzu's War Academy +100% Great General Emergence. All melee and archery units start with Combat I. Requires Iron Working, Horseback Riding, and Construction. Obsolete with Rifling.

Leonardo's Workshop -33% unit upgrade cost (what it used to do but slightly nerfed). Requires Engineering and Machinery. Obsolete with Industrialism.

Darwin's Voyage Get 1 free great scientist unit and +10% beakers to cities with a University. Requires Scientific Method.

Hagia Sofia (changes - this wonder sucks) Spawns 6 crusader units if a "holy war" (by the AP) is declared by or against the host civ. Raises number of maximum missionaries to 4. 1 Free settled priest specialist.

The problem is that all those wonders really represented great people at work.

Sun Tzu never founded a war academy ; Adam Smity never founded a Trade Compay. Leonardo's Workshop only meant something because Leonardo worked there, and Copernicus' observatory the same.

I agree that some more new wonders would be great, but better to use ones that are actual buildings, not simply some otherwise ordinary place that's only famous because a great person lived there (which are best represented by settling great people) ; let alone things that never existed.

For example, you could have the Empire State building or some other building that's a symbol of modern corporatism instead of the Smith Trading co.

Also, in some ways, a couple of them were replaced by National Wonders (like Wall Street and Oxford.)

Ths a great point. I didn't even think about it like that.

World Trade Center would be a great modern wonder. Pretty serious feat for it's day.

Maybe something like +2 Foreign Trade Routes in all cities and +100% Commerce for that city, something like that.

Although obviously, it would be obsolete with Advanced Flight.

^^Ouch. Tasteless.
Nevertheless, my vote for more wonders includes Burj Dubai, Petra and Sydney Opera House. I think these would be great additions.

Another wonder I'd like to see is the Grand Canal of Venice.

Or for that matter, ANY of the canals.. Suez, Panama

The Oracle is more of a "great person" than anything, now that you got me thinking about that... Sydney Opera House is great. Golden Gate Bridge maybe too (or Sydney Harbor Bridge, but...) You know what would be AMAZING? The Panama Canal -- althouth i dont know how to make it work in civ...

The Grand Canal of Venice is completely different from Panama or Suez, though - the GC of Venice is essentialy a watery main street, not a connection between two oceans (or other bodies of water).

Regarding the Oracle, there were dozens if not hundreds of them, suceeding one another for over a millenia; the wonder in-game is the building where they presided, which is also often known as the Oracle.
